michelle bachman joins us this morning from minneapolis. well, the 112th congress is set to convene on wednesday. but i want to go back a little bit and talk about the last workings of the 111th with you, michelle. in particular, that the year ended with this deal on taxes and an extension of unemployment benefits. would that deal have been made with a congress that's about to take... convene on wednesday? >> well, that's a good question. there was a diversity of opinion on this bill. i voted against it because i was concerned about it not being paid for. it also blows a $111 billion hole in the social security trust fund. there is no money in that trust fund, so they have to go to the general treasury, where there's also no money. that means an additional borrowing for that $111 billion in addition to the $57 billion for unemployment. so we're continuing to go down the road that we've gone down before, which is spending money that we don't have. that's really i think one of the strongest messages that we took away from the election in nove

chris: speaking of shiny objects, talked this week with michelle bachman who is a genius for gettingublicity. she is so outrageously interesting as a political figure. is she going to actually run for the presidency? >> she's going out to iowa. this is -- is like sarah palin part b. >> there's only one right answer to that question and it's, god, i hope so. she's running for senate. she was kicked out of house leadership. what this this is all just a smokescreen, gather names and run for senate in minnesota. i don't think she could win a statewide race but she will raise money. chris: will republicans value someone who rouses them up, a firecracker of a candidate, count chockula, or do they want a manager given the fact that the economy will still be dicey? >> i think in the end, sarah palin and the populace, i think in the end republicans will go back to what they have always been. they'll end up with a governor, more solid. >> i would like to believe that but i think ultimately you have so many moderates in that field right now that it's entirely possible that a fire brand will end

michelle bachman will also be giving her own response online as the head of the tea party caucus. will you be watching one or the other, both? guest: that is the first i have heard michelle will be doing that. i will be watching paul. it is important to your what leadership has to say. it is, to a certain point -- if he cannot say it, do not do it. if you cannot even say the words in a speech, perhaps you are not as serious as people think. it will be interesting to hear what the president says about spending and how that measures up with what mr. ryan has said. host: are you a supporter of the tea party? guest: i like a lot of what they're doing but i have not had a chance to sign up for their caucus. it is a good group of folks. we could do a whole segment on with the tea party is. host: are you concerned that michelle bachman is taking too much attention away from paul ryan? guest: no, there is so much attention to go around. i think mr. ryan will do a good job explaining where we are. i do not think we will be ready for some of the measures that i think are necessary, until the
