that's bring in michelle cortez. even anthony faucher this development extraordinary. chelle: it is absolutely extraordinary how quickly this has gotten to potentially reaching regulators and perhaps people around the world. we have to remember that this virus has not even been around for the past year. that isa vaccine potentially 90% effective against it is really amazing. not only that, no one was expecting we've been hit these kind of levels of effectiveness. they would have expected 50%. to be almost double that is truly remarkable. what about the united states, 10 million cases now? is this a case where we've had infections in the past concentrated and going up again or is it the case of a very large, diverse country with areas that have not gotten the virus where we are seeing the biggest gain? michelle: absolutely the second point. the united states is a huge country and early in the outbreak in march and april, we were seeing intense pandemic conditions enclosed areas like new york city and boston and parts of northern california, washington state. now what we

emily: i want to bring in bloomberg's health care reporter michelle cortez. t this into perspective for us. how good is this given the circumstances? michelle: it is unquestionable that this early result from pfizer and biontech is better than anyone could have imagined. it has been less than a year since we even knew that this virus existed. the idea that a vaccine would be available to prevent more than 90% of infections is mind-boggling. work and talking about the potential for a vaccine, they were saying they were hoping for 60% to 70% effectiveness. they would have approved something at 50%. looking at more than 90% is amazing. that being said, it is early days. we know about 94 infections, less than 100 out of 43,000 people. to say that it is early is perhaps an understatement. emily: talk to us about the outstanding issues. what more hurdles to these vaccines need to clear? michelle: the more urgent hurdle is the idea of safety. we don't have any details from the companies yet. they say they will be putting out some early data in about 10 days from now.

for more, michelle cortez. -- michelle cortez joins us now.to look at the numbers in the united states. in europe, we are dealing with lockdowns and living with that in many european capitals. we are looking across the atlantic and weathering whether the u.s. is six weeks, four weeks behind where europe is. we still see evidence that is turning out to be the case. -- are we seeing evidence that is still turning out to be the case? michelle: the u.s. is two weeks to a month behind europe. the thing different happening across the pond is the lockdowns happening in europe are not yet in the works in the u.s.. we are seeing about 150,000 new cases across the united states, hospitalizations are rising, critical levels in many areas, and that will follow. still, americans are very individualistic, not interested in going back into the isolation period we saw about six to nine months ago. it will take significant numbers and affecting people more personally before americans will be willing to go back into it. as opposed to what we see in europe where

let's get to michelle cortez. look at some of the key swing states, how bad is the virus situation getting again? michelle: the virus is heading absolute peak levels all across the midwest, which is where a lot of these battleground states are. we see almost 7000 new cases in illinois. we are hitting records in minnesota, in iowa. for absolutely catastrophic people who are trying to get the virus under control and who are afraid for their own health and the health of their elderly family members. haidi: in the meantime, you take a look across the pond, you are seeing the biggest economies in europe also locking down. what are the german and u.k. leaders saying about the moves? michelle: in germany and in the u.k., they have acknowledged that the virus is at exponential growth levels and they have to do something significant. we are seeing significant lockdowns in the u.k. they are shutting everything down. gyms are closed, bars. they are keeping nurseries and schools open. they are trying to have a little bit of a

michelle cortez has more on this. question on everybody's minds around the world, when could we see these vaccines? michelle: they are moving so quickly when it comes to these vaccines. we heard from pfizer today that they have gotten the safety data and they have not seen anything that is worrisome. up to this point, all we have gotten is press releases and interviews with the company, but i would say within the next week or two, they are going to file for an emergency authorization with the fda and they will have to include all the data with that information. that will trigger a public discussion of those findings and we will all really be able to look into the information and find out just how safe and effective these vaccines are so probably within the next couple of weeks, we are going to know more. >> sorry. shery: go ahead, haidi. haidi: you and i have been talking about trying to get a gauge of distribution, of transport, of storage, of access and availability so i'm wondering, do we know how many people in the
