i'm michelle gielan. it's an unbelievable story. a california girl kidnapped nearly two decades alone has been found alive. jaycee lee dugard had been held captive by a convicted rapist. >> reporter: jaycee lee dugard hadn't been seen or heard from in 18 long years. >> there are no known attempts by her to reach out to anybody. >> reporter: so when she accompanied the convicted sex oh fender and his wife nancy to a parole meeting in concord, california, authorities got suspicious. during questioning they discovered jaycee now 29 now called alyssa was the 11-year-old girl kidnapped in 1991 in south lake tahoe. and it turns out philip garrido had fathered the children with jaycee. >> none of the children had gone to school, they had never gone to a doctor. they were kept in complete isolation. >>> the two girls were 11 and 13. they were held in a secret area behind gar rideau's homes. >> the hidden backyard had tents, sheds, and outbuildings where they spent most of their lives. >> reporter: neighbors say they never saw jaycee or the

i'm michelle gielan. the lion of the senate has been silenced. senator ted kennedy passed away last night following a battle with brain cancer. he was 77 years old and died at the family home in hyannisport. he was the last surviving son of a glamorous but tortured political family who spent half a century in the senate fighting for those who need. we are in washington with more. tara, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. word of kennedy's death came this morning in a brief statement from his family who said his faith, perseverance and optimism will live on. massachusetts senator edward kennedy died at his home in hianis surrounded by loved one after a year-long battle with brain cancer. kennedy's family said we've lost the irreplaceable center of our family and joyous light in our lives. but the inspiration of his faith, optimism and perseverance will live on forever. local massachusetts residents are also mourning the loss of the popular senator. >> sad, sad. >> it's an impact for the whole country, especially on a political level, you know
