. >> and i'm michelle griego. contract talks are on. >> workers are hoping for irresolutions soon. elissa harrington is there. and many spent the night in front of the store didn't they. >> they have been out here 24 hours a day since they first went on strike one week ago. temperatures dipped into the low 40s overnight, so it is chilly. they have a fire going. they have their blankets and employees have been out here ever since last sunday when the strike first started. there's pressure on both sides to reach an agreement, especially before the busy holiday season. thousands of employees represented by the united food workers union have been walking the picket line since last week. the union refused to accept the contract proposal. here's what it included a wage freeze. holding veterans clerking at 21.30. they wanted to eliminate sunday and holiday premium pay. workers i talked wanted their contracts to stay as they were and were hoping for a speedy resolution. >> our main problem is they want to take our insurance that we have now, our medical and change it to raley's private ins

. >> and i'm michelle griego. commuting this morning, a lot of heavy fog around the bay this morning. visibility is especially bad on major bridges. cbs5 reporter, anne makovec is on the embarcadero near the bay bridge with conditions. good morning. >> reporter: good morning very foggy at ground level. that is the bay bridge above me. you can't see it very well because of the fog. it is very heavy right now. you can just see the lights of the bay bridge. this is a warning really to all drivers. we took this video, about 40 minutes ago at the bay bridge toll plaza and you can see difficult for drivers right now. it's one of those situations where you're driving along and suddenly you hit that wall of fog. the chp has issued a fog advisory in fact for most of the bay area bridges. they say it's bad in the vacaville davis area. visibility down to less than 10000 feet. they mentioned 580 east as a traffic hot spot when it comes to the foggy area. and remember to leave plenty of room between you and the vehicle? front

i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everybody. i'm frank mallicoat. it is 5:31. it's a stormy morning in the bay area meaning a rash of crashes, flooding on the roads, on the embarcadero it was a mess, and power outages. >> you can see from the radar we are not out of the woods yet. so let's start with lawrence tracking the current conditions in the weather center. >> yeah. a lot of folks like to travel on this day. i'm hoping they sleep in a little bit. i think later on it will be okay but right now the rain is still falling. a lot of puddles and flooding on the roads. high-def doppler radar picking up on that, most of it heading further south and parts of the east bay right now. you can see the showers continuing toward the san jose area. so we're not done with the storm system just yet but i think as we head in toward the middle of the day the skies will start to part but right now you have the rain coming down and looks like it will continue to do so over the next couple of hours. we have mostly cloudy skies, even some drizzle continuing and light showers int

i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everybody. i'm frank mallicoat. it is 5:00 straight up now. the port of oakland could be shut down today. >> cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington is in alameda with more on that strike. elissa. >> reporter: good morning. we are here at the port of oakland, where workers are expected to be shuttled in throughout the morning to go on strike. now, this is day two of a strike that's targeting both the port and oakland international airport. they are both under the same management. now, workers with the service employees international union are upset over contract negotiations. they have been working without a contract for 16 months and talks have been dragging. the union says the port wants to cut wages and benefits to more than 200 workers. that includes janitors and maintenance workers. they also say port executives have been illegally withholding important information related to bargaining. >> we're going to show the port authority that we're serious, that we want a contract. we want to protect our workers' benefits. it's a matter of worker solidar

i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everybody. i'm frank mallicoat. we begin this hour with developing news in san francisco. a lightning strike near a transformer causing a power outage and now dozens of customers are left in the dark. >> cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran has more from san francisco with an update on the work crews are doing. how's it going? >> reporter: they are working hard. i spoke with a crew member a few moments ago who said four or five transformers are affected. i want to show you right now, there's a lot of work going on in the noe valley neighborhood to try to turn that power back on. right now 100 customers are affected. pg&e says lightning didn't directly hit the transformers here but it hit near hoffman avenue. now customers on fountain street, grandview avenue are also affected. for or five transformers were hit or were actually shut down and that's what caused the outage. now, if you look at some video, you can see that crews are busy working. the challenge involved multiple transformers so pg&e had to count how many custome

i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everybody. i'm frank mallicoat. it is 5:01 now. we are following some developing news down in palo alto. that's where a masked man broke in an apartment and woke up a woman inside. >> cbs 5 reporter anne makovec is on the scene where k-9 dogs are helping with the search. >> reporter: they so far have not found this guy. in happened here at this -- it happened here at this apartment complex at high and a thorn in palo alto at 2:20 a.m. -- hawthorne in palo alto at 2:20 a.m. a woman found a man in her apartment, she screamed and he ran way. she lived on the ground floor of the building in downtown palo alto. police aren't saying how the man got in. police blocked off the neighborhood and sent dogs to search for him. no luck. so they have since opened the streets back up, called the dogs and are interviewing the woman right now. >> at this point in time, she is safe and unharmed. she is with detectives and they are conducting interviews and the investigation is ongoing. >> reporter: we don't know how get to in, whether

. >> i'm michelle griego. time now 6:00. let's get to elizabeth. we have been following a standoff since 11:00 last night. >> reporter: police standoff, it started around 11:00 last night on treasure island is over. the armed robbery suspect is dead. we have confirmed that. so they are in the process now of re-opening those off-ramps to treasure island. just a couple of minutes ago, in fact, they opened the eastbound off-ramp to treasure island. they should be re-opening the westbound on the upper deck access any moment now. in the meantime they turned on the metering lights early a good, gosh, 20 to 25 minutes earlier than typical so that's why you see these early- morning backups already behind the pay gates. earlier when treasure island was completely closed off to the public, never really impacted the morning drive on the upper deck and now we're just beginning to see slowing up that incline towards treasure island so again the latest information as of a couple of minutes ago is they are in the process of re- opening those off-ramps to treasure

i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everybody. i'm frank mallicoat. 5:01 is your time. new this morning, a suspected drunk driver arrested but not until after a wild overnight chase. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is in san francisco's mission district at one of the crime scenes related to this point,. >> reporter: i want to show you now this is one of the cars involved in that chase that that driver hit one of two parked cars tulip. here's the surprising detail about that driver. this is her fourth dui in the past 10 years. take a look at some video from the scene earlier. i'll walk you through. the suspect drove on to a closed on-ramp to westbound 80. a chp tried to pull her over. then she exited on mission and van ness and the chase began. she led officers through small streets in the mission and in that short time she hit one car that rolled forward and hit a cyclist. that cyclist was taken to san francisco general hospital is expected to be okay. but after that she continued on to hit another parked car that one we showed you when we first were here at the beginning

. >> i'm michelle griego. a lightning strike near a transformer leaves dozens in the dark. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is with the crews that are busy now trying to get those lights back on. >> reporter: good morning. they have been working nonstop. pg&e says there is still no estimated time of when the power will be restored. but you can look right now. they are in one of the cherry pickers trying to bring power back to the area. one crew member told me they are hoping to get the lights back on by 8 or 9:00 this morning. about 100 customers had their lights out because of the hoffman, fountain street and grandview avenue outages. that caused transformers to be shut down. the challenge is because so many transformers were affected. pg&e had to count just how many customers were tied to each transformer. for customers the challenge will be getting that power on in time for the workday. how will this affect your workday? >> it's bad. my husband works out of our home. so this is going to affect him most of all. >> reporter: now, last we heard, pg&e was able to replace one tra

i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everybody. i'm frank mallicoat. nearly 5:30 now.s are now being allowed back in a local hotel after a hazardous leak happened this morning. cbs 5 reporter anne makovec joins us now from burlingame to explain what caused the unexpected wake-up calls. good morning, anne. >> reporter: good morning. it was a carbon monoxide scare isolated to a boiler. the building did just get the "all clear" as you mentioned. people finally getting back in their rooms. i'm sure it's going to be very nice to get back in their beds. they are prioritizing getting people back in as far as people who have flights this morning. the embassy suites on anza boulevard is by sfo. hundreds of people were evacuated just before 1:00 a.m. the fire department got a call around 12:30 this morning and determined there was high levels of carbon monoxide from a boiler malfunctioning on the side of the building. they immediately evacuated hundreds of guests first sounding an alarm and then on a bull horn to tell people to get up and go outside. >> had a good alarm system.

i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everybody. i'm frank mallicoat. time now is nearly 6:32.egin this hour with some breaking news on the bay bridge. a multicar accident is creating a massive backup on the westbound lanes. let's get right to elizabeth in the traffic center. >> thank you. if you work in san francisco you may want to consider an alternate to the bay bridge this morning. the five-car crash is cleared. this is a view liv from chopper 5. the damage is done stacked up into the macarthur maze. they had to turn on the metering lights about a half hour earlier than typical. so even when we have a minor stall on the upper deck, it causes big backups. you can imagine what a five-car crash would do. the roads are slick. drives are taking it extra easy in addition to that. so you can see all the approaches to the bay bridge are backed up including down the eastshore freeway where we actually had an earlier traffic alert in emeryville approaching powell street. so again, let's talk about alternates. bart might be your best option. the san mateo bridge looks okay right now

. >> i'm michelle griego. time now 6:00. two fires in just a matter of hours in the north bay, both suspicious. >> cbs 5 reporter anne makovec is in vallejo now with the investigation this morning. anne, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it is just beginning here at the village bar. this is on tuolumne street in vallejo. you can see inside of the bar not a whole lot of damage to the building. several items are singed. there is some water damage. this is where the investigation is focused this morning. this was though the second fire within about a six-hour period overnight within two blocks. i want to show you some pictures of this fire. a little earlier this broke out at 2:45 at the village bar. and police have called this fire suspicious. they don't know the cause yet. well, two blocks away, there was a house fire at 8:00 last night. that was on alabama street. now, no one was home at the time. so nobody was injured. and firefighters were able to get that out once neighbors alerted them to that fire. but that fire i

i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everybody. i'm frank mallicoat. happening now a big sinkhole shutting down a neighborhood in pittsburg. cate caugiran is in pittsburg to explain why an old pipe is likely to blame. >> the old pipe is the cause of the water main break. parts of the pipe are exposed. pittsburg public works has it under control. the next step is to replace the pipe that you see over there. now, earlier workers were using a vacuum to get rid of excess water in the sinkhole. that sinkhole was about 4 feet deep. it took utility workers an hour and a half to shut off the water. public works tells me it was an old pipe and the brakes could be attributed to normal wear and tear. >> hopefully get water restored to the residents within the next couple of hours. >> reporter: 10 to 15 homes have been affected between york and cutter streets here in the pittsburg neighborhood but look back out live right now. you are, again, there's still a lot of work for these utility workers and quite a bit of mess that the water main break started and what i

. >> i'm michelle griego. time now is 6:00. breaking news in fremont. >> a major street blocked after a deadly police shooting this morning. cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington explains the shooting began with a domestic violence call. she has the latest. >> reporter: good morning. central avenue is closed while police investigate this officer- involved shooting and you can't see the house where this happened, but if you look down central avenue where those flashing lights are, that's where police killed a man late last night when responding to a domestic violence call. it happened on the 4500 block of central avenue in fremont. a woman called 911 at around 11:00 saying her roommate was being attacked. when police arrived, it was quite a dramatic scene. a woman came running out of the house. behind her, her estranged husband. he was naked and chasing her with a knife. >> officers arrived and found a female later identified as our victim running out of the unit with her husband pursuing her. he was naked with a knife in his hand. o

i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everybody. i'm frank mallicoat. police in san jose are calling him public enemy number one. a violent criminal and a danger to the community. >> after a weekend crime spree that left one man dead and a police officer injured, one suspect is still on the run. cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington is on the developing story. >> reporter: the city raised the reward money to $20,000. they are asking for the public's help in identifying this suspect and getting him off the streets before somebody else becomes a victim. this is who police are looking for, a man in his early 20s, 5'10" to 6 feet tall who officers call armed, dangerous and a threat to the community. police say he and 26-year-old jonathan wilbanks, who is in custody, went on a slight rampage friday night killing a man and injuring an officer. >> these were heinous crimes perpetrated by two individuals who have no regard for human life. >> reporter: their crime spree started around 7:30 when they robbed a little caesar's at gunpoint, then a gas station, jack-in-th
