i'm frank mallicoat. >> i'm michelle griego. time now is 6 :30. developing news from sfo where a boeing 777 still sits after it came to a stop. the wreckage likely there all week. cate caugurian is at the airport with the details coming out of the investigation. >> reporter: good morning. investigators are trying to figure out if it was the pilot's inexperience that could have played a role. asiana airlines says this was the pilot's first time landing into sfo. the airline tells us he was an experienced flyer but still in training with this type of aircraft. he had flown this type of plane nine times clocking 43 hours flying time. here's an animation of what happened seconds before saturday's crash. the pilot struggled. he tried to abort the landing and try to go back up in the air after he realized he was flying too slow and too low. >> i will tell you the speed was significantly below 137 knots. and we're not talking about a few knots. >> reporter: the airline says the co-pilot did have more experience. he had at least 3400 hours of flying time.

. >> i'm michelle griego. time now is 5:29.pix 5's sue kwon is gathering the latest developments in a house fire in san jose. and sue, we're learning why there were more than 100 cats inside the home. >> here's the reason why. >> reporter: the person who was living here was a volunteer who took in feral cats and cared for them. animal care and control knows about the house. by all accounts the cats are very well taken care of. at around 1:45 this morning, a fire broke out in the back of the house. carol miller escaped through a side door, got into a back patio but that back patio was locked in to keep the animals from escaping. so she cowered in a corner, called 911 and when firefighters got there, they were able to rescue her and her dog. the dog is the one who woke her up and saved her life. when firefighters got in there they were able to knock down the fire relatively quickly in an hour. but unfortunately, many of the cats, about 100 of them, were enclosed in a caged area and didn't escape. many of them died from smoke inha

i'm michelle griego. >> i'm brian hackney. frank is off this week.ime now is 6:30. >>> kpix 5 was first on scene of a developing story in santa clara this morning. cate caugiran is gathering new information from the scene of a gun range break-in. >> reporter: good morning. police say it was a silent alarm that tipped off police and officers were able to catch them in the act. look at the damage just here, the suspects are -- santa clara police say the suspects broke in through this window. the owner believes they were in for a short period of time. but the three suspects took several high value firearms. officers got here just as they were trying to get away. in the chase, the suspects threw firearms, presumably stolen ones, at the officer. the silent arm was worth the investment, according to -- the silent alarm was worth the investment, according to the the owner. >> until you need it, you pay a lot of money for it and hope you'll never need it but if you do, you hope it, would. and it's the first time this has ever happened here. it worked great.

. >> and i'm michelle griego. we'll get to that in a minute. the ntsb is set to release new details this afternoon about who was operating asiana flight 214 and what led up to the crash. investigators have already started interviewing the three captains and first officer from the flight. among the big questions why the plane was going 40 miles per hour below the recommended speed as it approached the run way. investigators are also looking into the condition of the pilots and the 72 hours prior to the crash and any possible miscommunication with the control tower. >> we don't believe there is a communication issue at this point. we have convened the cockpit work order working group populated with english and korean speakers. they'll be working to develop a transcript of that tape. it's a two hour tape. they are probably going to focus on the approach and landing phase. all communications with air traffic control are required to be in english. >> we're also learning today the ceo of asiana airlines is set to arrive within san francisco within th

i'm michelle griego. >> i'm brian hackney. frank is off this week. time now 6:30 straight up. >>> developing news, this video just in within the last hour shows the moment a bullet train in spain derailed. watch as it speeds around a corner going about 120 miles an hour and then flies off the tracks. the train split in half. the accident happened at 8:42 p.m. wednesday evening spain time. investigators this morning are still literally picking up the pieces and looking for survivors. 78 people were killed. more than 140 are injured. and those numbers are expected to rise. >>> time is ticking. we have less than a week and a half until bart could go on strike again. bart workers say they will walk off the job august 4 if they don't see a new contract. experts warn if bart employees do strike again, things could be much worse. there could be even longer lines for buses and ferries this time around. and that has hundreds of thousands of riders already on edge. kpix 5 reporter anne makovec is live at the embarcadero bart station in san francisco with more

i'm michelle griego. >> i'm frank mallicoat. nearly 5:30 now. new this morning, firefighters rushing to the wreckage of asiana flight 214 overnight after smoke was seen coming from the plane. it happened while crews were clearing some of the debris from saturday's crash. runway 28-left expected to open on sunday. investigators say the engine and automatic flight controls were all working normally before saturday's crash. the pilot told them that a flash of light he saw did not affect his vision. kpix 5 reporter anne makovec has more only latest overnight developments. >> reporter: yeah. there was smoke seen pouring out of the wreckage of the flight at about 3:30 this morning. if it was a fire, it appears to be out. but right after that they started moving it. they have been moving it very slowly down the runway. it's difficult to see but we shot this video within the past half hour of what looks like a vehicle pulling that wreckage into likely a hangar here at the airport so the investigation can continue. we are waiting for more information on

i'm frank mallicoat. >> i'm michelle griego.ime now 5:29. breaking news in san mateo. a fire at a multilevel apartment complex gutted six homes. firefighters are on the scene mopping up. kpix 5's sue kwon is there with the tool that helped firefighters pinpoint the fire. >> reporter: this fire broke out around 1:00 at 2201 bridgepoint parkway. it's an apartment complex in san mateo. and residents woke up to the sound of fire alarms and the smell of smoke. firefighters tell me that somewhere on the second floor, a fire broke out in the vent attached to a dryer. so possibly lint caught on fire or it was an electrical fire. that sent smoke to the second and third floors. right around the time they arrived, the sprinkler system went off so residents were seen evacuating the building. water damage, smoke damage in about 6 units. firefighters used a special device, a thermal imaging camera, to pinpoint the hot areas, the heat spots in the walls. once they found it they knocked through the wall and put out the fire with no injuries, no

kpix 5's michelle griego tells us the woman credits her dog for saving her life. >> i'm fine and bunnyfine and she saved me. >> reporter: shortly before 2:00 this morning, carol miller's dog bunny started barking. >> as soon as i stood up on the couch and turned around, i could see that flames were coming from my bedroom. >> reporter: they ran to an end closed patio in the back of the home and waited for firefighters to rescue them. the fire was under control in about an hour but crews had to deal with dozens of animals found inside. >> she had over 100 cats in her residence. >> they have nowhere else to go, they come home to me. >> reporter: miller says she takes in feral cats most of them elderly and too vulnerable to live on the streets. >> some need individual care. others just need to be in a secure safe location which i thought my home was. >> reporter: most of the 100 cats inside the home died in the fire. miller says they were well cared for and were like children. >> my friends and i will take all of their little bodies and we'll drive them up to napa where i have many, many a

. >> i'm michelle griego. you time now 5:289. new information involving breaking news out of san jose. a police officers has shot and killed a pit bull just north of downtown. cate caugiran found out it reported with mail theft. >> reporter: we are at third and empire. there's still quite a bit of activity going on now. we know that officers were conducting a follow-up investigations at this house at third and empire. they were doing a probation search. when the officers get to the home a woman answered the door, then san jose police say a pit bull came out of the basement area and then police say the dog bit the officer on the lower left leg. then the other officers on scene shot and killed the dog fearing for the officer's life. the injured officer was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay. now, san jose police tell me they came to this area after witnesses saw three suspects drive away after breaking into mailboxes at another apartment complex and police tracked down the license plate to this address and they tell m
