i'm michelle griego. >> i'm frank mallicoat.t's 5:30. >>> developing news in san jose, where firefighters made quick work of an industrial building fire on the cities north side. kpix5 joins us live from the scene along old bay shore highway. kiet? >> reporter: yeah, quick work is right. they got this thing knocked down in about 41 minutes or so. the fire department now in the investigation mop up phase of this fire that happened on the 1500 block of old bay shore . this came down at about 3:19 this morning when a passer-by saw smoke shooting out of the building and they called 1911 and the fire department had to cut their way into the building and chase down a lot of the heat, smoke and flames and that brought them to the back of the building to a landscaping business where they believe the fire started this morning. now they had to cut through walls to get to that point so a challenging situation in that regard. they do not believe this fire is suspicious. >> it's too early to say what the cause is any time there's a fire in t

. >> i'm michelle griego. time now 6:00. >>> new this morning, a person was burned when a fire ripped through an apartment near san jose state university. kpix 5's kiet do is live at the scene and kiet, firefighters are calling this a case of distracted candle lighting. >> reporter: yeah. you know, we have all heard plenty about distracted and walking. but this is new. distracted candle lighting. take a look at some of the damage here on the apartment building on the 400 block of south 8th street near san jose state on the third floor. the san jose fire department says a resident was striking a match while on the phone and then tossed the match on a couch. he then went outside to continue to talk on the phone and that's when he noticed smoke and flames. instead of running back inside to warn the roommate, he called the roommate on the phone. the roommate was by that time trapped by the flames and made a dramatic escape. >> it was reported that the person that sustained the burns did run through the fire and he

i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. it is 5:30.aking news from the scene of a freeway disaster in the sacramento valley. 10 people are dead after a big rig slammed head on into a bus of high school students. five students, three chaperones and both drivers were killed. it happened on i-5 in orland as the bus drove north on i-5. >> cate caugiran has the story. >> reporter: a public information officer says they are wrapping up their work here. it could be an hour or so before they move what's left from that accident. there's the bus and tractor- trailer on the road. you can only imagine the fear of the students on the bus excited for their futures. a charred bus and truck follow the accident on thursday afternoon. it was headed southbound when the truck crossed over the median into oncoming traffic. the fedex truck hit a car and smashed head on into a tour bus full of high school students. >> i see black but there's fire at the front of the bus. it's crushed in the front pretty much. so we all started jumping up to run away. >> repo

i'm michelle griego. >> i'm mark kelly filling in for frank this morning. time now 6:00. let's check in with liz for a morning commute. >> we have a lot of tweets about several accidents popping up around the bay area that unfortunately will slow you down. out to berkeley westbound 80 by gilman, this is the latest tweet from "kcbs traffic" looks like a four-car crash blocking the middle lane expect delays, you can see them on our sensors back to richmond. through the altamont pass there were a couple of earlier accidents one at grant line but this is one that appears to be causing the problem approaching vasco road. right lanes are blocked delays at the altamont pass beginning at 205 but once you get to the altamont pass almost a half hour to the dublin interchange. once you get past vasco it looks better closer to 680 and pleasanton. here's a live look in the south bay northbound 101 another accident this one approaching old oakland road off to the right-hand shoulder. traffic backed to tully. bay bridge no metering lights waiting for word when they will be turned on but

good afternoon, i'm michelle griego. frank is off. it happened late yesterday along i-5 in the town of orland north of sacramento. let's get out to kpix 5's cate caugiran. she is live at the scene. cate. >> reporter: now, a couple of things we want to note from the recent press conference that local hospitals said some of the victims there have been upgraded or released. we also have the glenn county sheriff's department, they are going to be working on notifying -- identifying all the deceased. as for the investigation, ntsb agents showed up here an hour ago as tow trucks and excavators worked to remove the debris. you can see it making its way off i-5. they have been here all morning to move this wreck from the roadway. the burned-out shells of a tour bus and a fedex semi on i-5 as investigators try to determine the cause of the crash. >> on scene, it is affirmative, semi versus a tour bus. >> reporter: authorities say the southbound semi suddenly swerved across the grassy median at 5:40 p.m. and slammed head on into the tour bus he

i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everyone. mallicoat. 5:30. >>> in the east bay an explosion is under investigation this morning. kpix 5's anne makovec is in san leandro where two people were critically burned last night. anne. >> reporter: this is the border of san leandro and oakland, mixed use neighborhood, railroad tracks, homeless encampment and you can see the police tape here at this apartment building where two people rushed into a home last night badly burned. exactly what happened, a lot of questions about that this morning. those two people are in the hospital with critical injuries. there was some sort of explosion possibly involving butane at the homeless encampment near the railroad tracks just before 10:00 last night then those two people rushed into a nearby home screaming frantic for water. it looked like they had made contact with a caustic substance but investigators don't know what exploded. >> the investigation from the law enforcement side is still ongoing and we're still trying to piece together what hap

>>> good morning everyone, i'm michelle griego. >> hi everyone, i'm frank mallicoat. 6:00. out the door. traffic and weather. we begin with a commute and some issues here in the city. >> that's right. and san francisco, the great highway remains shut down for flooding. in fact we're getting some ponding and some puddling in some roadways. but it's the great highway that remains closed in both directions between lincoln and vote until further notice. you can see some of the slick roadways out the door if you are leaving oakland heading into san francisco. behind the pay gates at the bay bridge teleplay is a the millions mrs.-- toll plaza the metering lights have not been turned on yet. in the meantime the middle ones the fast track lanes still get by with no problems. also leaving san francisco, southbound 280 at san jose avenue, we had a crash blocking several of the middle lanes. all lanes are now cleared and there's no longer any delay on 280 or 101 along the peninsula. different story in morgan hill. this crash was an overturn northbound 101 approaching cochran. long sin
