i'm frank mallicoat. >> and i'm michelle griego. time now is 6:30. >>> astral stolen car crash and -- a stolen car crash can police working through the night in the east bay. kpix 5's ryan takeo is with us from san pablo with the developing story about the crash that injured three women. ryan, good morning. >> reporter: frank, good morning. here's where it all ended right here. the violent crash ended up in the median right here on san pablo avenue and also al church lanen -- at church lane. you can see the glass in the middle of the street leftover from the crash happened. we'll now show you video of the smashed up car. two teen girls and an adult women were in the car. -- woman were in the car. the crash threw that one woman out of the car. this started about 8:00 last night and officers tried to stop the car about half a mile away. police say the driver then sped off. but the chase did not last long. it turned into a brief pursuit. >> probably 20 seconds or so in the pursuit. >> reporter: it's only about 20 seconds. the driver lo

. >> i'm michelle griego. time now is 6:00. >>> and we're going back to our breaking news in san jose. kiet do is on the scene of a fire that apparently started with an explosion this morning. kiet. >> reporter: good morning. some terrifying moments for some rest didn't out here on the alameda just off of 880. this yellow building that you're looking at is a law office and this is where this whole thing happened about an hour ago. they heard what sounded like an explosion or gunfire. we have cell phone video of a gas meter explosion rupture. the neighbors ran out to the balcony shot some cell phone footage of this. they said it was shooting 10 to 15 feet in the air, called 911. when the firefighters got here they said it looked like a ball of fire. they were able to turn the gas off at another location and let it bleed out. the fire department did a good job of keeping the flames from spreading to the near every nearby buildings. they did evacuate the apartment complex next door for some time. we spoke with a

. >> i'm michelle griego. time now is 6:00. >> we begin with breaking news in san francisco. an apartment fire in the twin peaks neighborhood forcing dozens of people out of their homes early this morning. kpix 5 reporter anne makovec tells us investigators believe the fire was accidental. she is live at the scene with more. anne. >> reporter: yeah. neighbors figured might have been started by an unattended candle. dozens of people evacuated early this morning. one apartment is heavily damaged and another has minor damage. firefighters are still on scene in corbett avenue in twin peaks neighborhood in san francisco. firefighters are still clearing smoke from the hallways but most people are being allowed back in their homes. the fire broke out on the third floor at about 4:30 a.m. and it was tough for firefighters to reach. they had to run hoses about 400 feet through a courtyard. neighbors say they grabbed fire extinguishers and were trying to help put it out themselves. again, some neighbors that i spoke with say that a person may have left a candle unattended although the

good evening everyone, i'm michelle griego. >> and i'm brian hackney. reporter greg mills joins us from canyon in orange county and tells us more people are being evacuated at this hour, greg? >> reporter: they are, 217 residences have been placed under evacuation orders. but u.s. forest service told us that a lot of the people did leave last time they had to leave because of a fire they were out a long long time. they remember that. this fire consumed 1600 acres so far. 10% contained and we expect both numbers to two up when there's a briefing in about ten minutes. air drops are playing a big role in the progress being made fighting this fire in silverado canyon. ten helicopters and two cannons are part of it. they ran two water dropping helicopters through the night. that's a change from 2009. air help is necessary on this fire. watch the middle firefighter as he tries to keep his footing on this steep rugged mountain. >> at 2:00, we were a little worried and we started packing up. >> reporter: they and their pets were packed and ready to roll overnig

. >> i'm michelle griego. happening today, a firefighter's union is calling on the mayor of san francisco to oust the fire chief. kpix 5's anne makovec joins us live with more. the union president just wrapped up a meeting with the mayor what did he say? >> just about a half-hour ago, the mayor told the union president to come back later this afternoon with representatives from all of the different factions of the union that signed this letter calling for the ouster of san francisco fire chief joanne hayes-white. they are planning to come back with the letter at 4 p.m. but the union says its stance remains the same. >> we are a very proud institution and we want to serve the public to the best of our ability and we feel we're not able to do that right now so we're trying to regain our footing and make san francisco proud again. that's our goal. >> reporter: the letter is signed by leaders of every faction of the union and the history of the san francisco fire department that has never happened. it calls for th

i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. breaking news in san mateo. multiple pedestrians hit near the hillsdale mall. len ramirez is live on the phone at the scene. what's happening? >> reporter: i'm at the hillsdale west hillsdale boulevard and steven road here in san mateo. and there has been a major accident involving a vehicle into four pedestrians on the sidewalk at 10:30 this morning as a black acura was driving westbound on hillsdale boulevard and veered on to the sidewalk, where there were three teenagers and one adult female in her 20s walking also in the same direction. they were hit from behind. the windshield was broken. so major injuries. the driver of the vehicle a man in his 50s as well as all of the pedestrians have been taken to the hospital. we have no word on their conditions. it looks like there was a lot of blood lost here on the pavement and we're talking about some major injuries. so major injury investigation is ongoing here by the san mateo police department. >> len, can you describe the neighborhood there? it's very close to

i'm brian hackney. >> and i'm michelle griego. time now is 6:30.ng news in the east bay these are live pictures right now from chopper 5 of interstate 880 in san leandro. the freeway has been closed in both directions for seven hours -- several hours now because of a crash involving a big rig and an suv. kpix 5's ryan takeo is live at the scene with the latest on the accident and the efforts to clear the wreckage. ryan? >> reporter: and michelle we just heard from chp within the last couple of minutes and we moved you noticed we're on the northbound side right now. southbound all lanes 880 in san leandro expected to open momentarily. northbound take a look beyond me. still a standstill right here. this crash happened just after 3:00. we know nine people were injured and three critically injured. and we don't have an estimate right now as to when the northbound lanes are going to reopen. chp saying that it's going to be at least 8:00 but they don't have a firm time right now. and of course that is subject to change. now here is a -- listen to the ch

i'm michelle griego. >> hi everyone, i'm frank mallicoat. it is 6:00. >>> and we begin in san jose where firefighters are purring watt -- pouring water oen a two alarm lumberyard fire. kpix 5's kiet do joins us live from old oakland road with the very latest. >> reporter: here we are four hours after this thing began and finally they shut off the hoses, you can see a lot of that smoke and -- embers are still smoldering out here. so it's still quite an active scene out here in north san jose. we've got some incredible footage provided to us by san jose fire that shows us some towering flames out here. this whole thing began at about 2:00 this morning at a lumberyard on oakland road and highway 101. workers at a neighboring business called 911 when they saw the flames. when firefighters arrived they saw the flames shooting up to 40 feet in the air. this quickly went to a second alarm and tea took a defensive strategy. sometimes they call it surround and drown. they stay back and dump a bunch of water on it. it was stacks upon stacks of wooden

i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. 5:30. >>> dozens of people replain out of their mountain view apartments this morning after reports of a gas leak led to the discovery of two dead bodies. it happened on california street and mark sayre is in mountain view right now with more. mark. >> reporter: well, michelle, this is still a very active crime scene. california street is still closed. both mountain view police and fire and hazmat are here. we are near el camino real. you can see the fire department has a command post here. here's what we know. it was about 6:00 last night that police and fire crews were called here on a report of a strong odor possibly of natural gas or some other kind of chemical odor. it was so strong that police ordered the evacuation of two apartment buildings and issued a "shelter in place" order for another. once fire crews started going through the building they discovered two bodies inside one of the apartments. there is no information on how these people died or if the deaths are in fact con
