i'm kenny choi. >> i'm anne makovec in for michelle griego. police in san francisco stepping up patrols for new year's eve festivities but this is not a result of the recent terror threat at pier 39. katie nielsen report. >> reporter: 250,000 people are expected to be here along the waterfront on embarcadero for the fireworks on new year's eve. san francisco police said it's going to be an all hands on deck event with extra officers on patrol. the city's emergency management team set up a dedicated text alert system for the new year's eve festivities. there are asking anyone planning to come down to the embarcadero to sign up for the alert. >> currently there's no credible threat to san francisco. but public safety is our number one priority. we are working with local and state and federal agencies to make sure we're in constant communication. >> reporter: to sign up for the new year's eve text message alert, text nyesf17 to 888777. the city had already been working on plans for this text message alert system before the terror threat at pier 3

i'm company. >> i'm michelle griego. new safety rules that are being proposed in the wake of this year's many wildfires. kpix 5's anne makovec is live at the california public utilities commission in san francisco with more. anne. >> reporter: these rules have been in the pipe for several years now but obviously taking on new gravity in the wake of all of the wildfires we have seen. the purpose is try to prevent the next devastating wildfire and, of course, the first thing we think of when we think of that the wine country wildfires here in october. so no official cause of those fires has yet been determined. there were reports of power lines arcing and falling as the fires were breaking out in very windy conditions. under these newly proposed rules, state regulators are considering today tree branches would have to be kept farther away from power lines and newly installed lines would have been to be farther apart. priorities given to power line repairs needed in high risk fire zones before low risk zones. and those repa

i'm michelle griego. >> i'm kenny choi. kpix 5's katie nielsen is live at san francisco international airport to show us what's going on there. katie, good morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning, kenny. so we're at terminal three right now and if you take a look back behind me you can see the line for tsa security. only about 20 minutes ago, we were told that there was a maybe 5 to ten-minute line. now just within the last 20 minutes, you can see how many people have filled in. the line just to get through security is at 20 to 25 minutes. and when we were talking with some of the folks earlier this morning, they said they didn't even think it was going to get that busy until 6:30 or 7:00. so these lines are definitely starting to back up even earlier than expected. more than 6 million people will be flying this holiday weekend. a million of them will be flying in or out of san francisco, oakland or san jose airports in. airport officials say they are expecting the longer lines at security and also at check-in as well as he
