and i'm michelle griego. it hap this mor >>> breaking news, a 4.4 earthquake shaking the bay area overnight. i'm kenny choi. >> i'm michelle griego. >> it happened around 2:30 this morning. the quake was centered a few miles southeast of berkeley. anne makovec is live near the oakland-berkeley border this morning with the latest. >> reporter: yeah. almost everybody we talked to has felt this earthquake to some extent. it woke people up all over the bay area. i'm a couple of blocks from the epicenter now. there's a shopping center here behind me. we have been peeking in all the windows. it doesn't appear there's any damage and we have heard no reports of real damage or injuries. so that is certainly good news. it was a 4.4 about two hours ago waking people up around the bay area. twitter was on fire reporting what they felt this morning. again very quiet here near the epicenter. we have seen a couple of pg&e crews around presumably just to check things out but the power is all on. we don't see anything toppled

i'm michelle griego. >> i'm kenny choi. good morning. a federal judge in transaction has blocked the trump administration from rolling back temporary amnesty for "dreamers." jackie ward has more. >> reporter: thanks to this ruling, the "deferred action for childhood arrivals" program must remain in place for now. president trump called to end the program in march and begin phasing it out at the time. several federal courts have challenged that order in the months following but now a federal judge in san francisco ordered the trump administration to start daca back up until the lawsuits are played out. president trump said if he can't get the money he wants for a border wall, a daca deal will not be reached. >> without the wall, we cannot have border security. >> reporter: yesterday, democrats wanted to finalize the daca deal. republicans wanted border security, ending the visa lottery and limiting immigration based on family ties. in a statement, state attorney general said: the department of justice released a statement last night ng ..

i'm michelle griego. >> i'm kenny choi. aan earthquake triggered a tsunami warning causing a scare along the coast. let's get to anne makovec in the pacifica area, just one of the areas that was under a tsunami warning. >> reporter: yes, luckily, that warning has expired. we have been checking the conditions here on the pacificca coast. -- pacifica coast. generally normal. we do expect small sea level coming up. and currents could be stronger than average. but really, nothing dangerous. that is the good news. that was after that watch came about 1:00 a.m. originally an 8.2. the usgs then downgraded to 7.9. there have been at least seven aftershocks of a magnitude 4.2 or higher. [ siren ] >> reporter: that is the sound of a tsunami warning siren going off in alaska, to warn people of the danger. you can see this video of cars lining up to evacuate the town of kodiak. that was when it was a warning there. then it was downgraded to an advisory, which was canceled about an hour ago. i'm michelle griego. >> good morning. i'm kenny choi. dramatic scene this morning in san jose where a three-alarm fire has displaced several people. kpix 5's jessica flores joins us live from san jose where crews are still on the scene. >> reporter: that fast-moving fire raced through the south san jose apartment complex in the middle of the night shortly after midnight people inside fast asleep. and let's take a look at what we're looking at out here. you can see a two-story apartment complex, in total four units destroyed. there's really nothing left behind. right now we have seen a couple of firefighters still on scene but for the most part, they are cleaned up here mopped up. it's a lot of debris left behind. in the middle of the night, firefighters bang on doors. they tried to get everyone to safety. eventually evacuating 16 people including five children plus pets. we talked to some residents here who say the fire started first on the first floor and spread to the second floor. they were frightened trying to escape. >> i hear some

i'm kenny choi. >> and i'm michelle griego. the death toll is at 17.e have the report from the area. >> reporter: you're looking at california's deadliest flooding in decades and search-and- rescue crews are going to be back at it again today searching through these destroyed homes just like this one they went through with dogs last night because the person who lived here is reportedly missing. this area still very dangerous. warnings of gas leaks, power lines down and, of course, houses just like this one that could still collapse. no water or power. this is like the stone age here as one firefighter put it. at least 17 people have been killed in these mudslides. another victim identified as a woman named rebecca reiskin a well-known luxury realtor killed by the flood from another room with her dogs as her husband watched her be swept away. more than a dozen people are still missing. you have at least 100 homes here destroyed, 300 other houses damaged. and 8 businesses here in montecito wiped out and the 101 freeway just about a mile from where we are

i'm michelle griego. >> good morning. i'm kenny choi. it is thursday, january 4th.have live team coverage. the earthquake struck around 2:30 this morning centering just a couple miles southeast of berkeley near the claremont hotel and that's where we find anne makovec this morning with the very latest near that oakland/berkeley border. >> reporter: a moderate quake, not very strong, 4.4, but enough to scare people. not big enough to do any damage. the epicenter is right at the claremont hotel a lot of people know that in berkeley. i'm about a half mile away from there at a shopping center where this morning's earthquakes is certainly the talk of the turn to. everybody has a story. most people jolted out of bed this morning as i was in san francisco. feeling like the building was shaking. we talked with one man who is a nurse. he was working in the icu at a nearby kaiser hospital. here's his story. >> the patients that were on ventilators and intubators woke up because it was such a big jolt from the earthquake. so you know, being in california would you like to thin

i'm michelle griego. >> and i'm kenny choi. kpix5's jessica flores is live with details from the chp on a shooting. >> reporter: good morning,; this shooting happened early in the morning still shut down. they say they found several shell casings. and the shooting happened around 3:00 a.m. officers say they're just in the early stages of the investigation. they can't even tell me at this point how many people were involved, who shot who in this freeway shooting or if there is even a suspect that they're looking for. chp says several victims drove themselves to the hospital. >> they received the call from the victim that transported themselves to san francisco general. the highway patrol is currently investigating and looking for evidence on the freeway at this time. >> reporter: you can hear from that chp officer, there there were no ambulances on the scene. but they did get the call of the freeway shooting at 280. and they came here and found several of those shell casings still on scene, investigating. and this freeway here.

i'm michelle griego. >> good morning, i'm kenny choi. we'll get a look at hi-def doppler. it's not just rain but also rough conditions along the coast today. the storm is bringing dangerous is your off to bay area beaches. the sierra is also seeing lots of snow and a winter storm warning is in effect right now. neda is in the weather center tracking our forecast and that hi-def doppler. >> yeah. our hi-def doppler showing that pretty much it's dry out there for most of our area now. we got most of the rain yesterday a little bit overnight, as well. a lot of people heard the raindrops. here's a look though at some of the locations that we are seeing rain. just right through the bayview district. some showers came through. so you may notice wet roads if you are driving maybe through downtown san francisco. but most of it now bringing rain over the water. and then also this is interesting. we are seeing this slushy mix. the area of pink shows that it's just cold enough in places like mount hamilton where the rain is turning to that slush. so take a look this morning at daylig

it's friday, january 12th, i'm michelle griego. >> i'm kenny choi. jessica flores reports on the mess. >> reporter: we're here on rancho drive and you can see the apartment behind me four burned down units. it burned both floors quickly spread spreading from unit to unit. this is the city's seven trees area. firefighters banged on doors and they tried to get everyone to safety. eventually they evacuated 16 people including five children and pets. we talked to some of those residents and they say that the fire started on the first floor porch quickly spreading to the second floor. they say it was frightening trying to escape. >> we got some help from the red cross, got us some [ indiscernible ] [ heavy accent ] hotel. >> reporter: firefighters were able to knock down the fire in about an hour. remember, this happened in the middle of the night shortly after midnight. so you can imagine people were fast asleep in their homes. now, the red cross did arrive on scene shortly after the fire helping the 16 displaced people. there are no injuries that we hav

. >> and i'm michelle griegoful we'll get to the -- griego. we'll get to the crash in a moment. but we want to start with the school bus crash in elsobranty. jessica flores on the chain- reaction accident. >> reporter: the school bus was carrying a pregnant driver and seven children. they were headed toward allen horsedale elementary school. about 5 miles away. on san pablo dam road, chp said a nasty crash set off a chain reaction. >> for unknown reasons, the volkswagen slowed its vehicle. and in an attempt to avoid collision, the chevy clear veered -- chevy careered r -- veered off and spun out of control. >> it crashed and sent 15 people to the hospital. two in critical condition. witnesses rushed in to help the kids. >> the bus driver was pregnant, panicking. i did what i could. everybody was safe for the most part. but it was really pretty traumatizing to everybody. >> reporter: chp says doctors checked out the seven children on the bus. and each is doing fine. it's unclear how the pregnant bus driver is doing. but two others, one in the white pickup truck, another in the cr
