with me now is nbc meteorologist michelle grossman. michelle, about an hour ago we got a new update. there are different formulas around different modelling for these hurricanes. what's your best information now? >> hi there, ali. yeah, we do have some big changes. we had some big-time changes overnight and we still need to tweak this as we get a little bit closer. this is what we're seeing right now, just that massive storm as you mentioned earlier. over 300 miles in diameter. we have a well defined eye, still very strong, a category 3 storm. that's a major storm, 120 mile per hour winds. we expect it to strengthen though overnight and then we'll see a little weakening tomorrow before we start to see big-time changes. by thursday 8:00 a.m., 145 miles per hour, that's the strengthening. by friday morning, this is where it gets very serious, very interesting, and really one to watch. category 3 storm right off the coast of wilmington, getting pounded with rain, getting pounded with storm surge, getting pounded with winds, and we're going

joining us now is michelle grossman, those pictures from the space station shows you how extraordinary this storm is. >> it is a strong one as expected, it's going to continue to strengthen and at least keep it's strength as it goes throughout those warm waters. category 3, hurricane florence, that's the one we're talking about, if you have not made plans, make plans, you have three days to prepare yourself. the latest category 4 is 130 miles an hour and we expect them to get higher as it approaches the coast line here. we have very warm waters, kind of fuels those storms and very low wind shear, and that's going to strengthen the storm. you want wind shear to pull apart those storms, that's not going to happen. so we expect a thursday-friday landfall on on the coast. we're going to see it moving very slowly as it makes landfall and we're going to see it sit and spin and drop a lot of rain. you want to focus on the cone, the landfall could be anywhere from cape hatteras down to charleston, and we are expecting high winds, high surf and rainfall up to 20 inches in some spots. >> thank y

msnbc meteorologist michelle grossman is here tracking the storm. i see it there behind you. it looks like quite the monster. what do we know at this point about timing? what do we know about where it's expected to strike? >> you said it, we don't have to know much about hurricanes, right, to know this is a serious situation. a textbook hurricane. we're looking at all the outflow. the red color indicating the high cloud tops, indicating the thunderstorms around this. almost a perfect eye. we did have two changes overnight with this. we had an eye wall replacement which tends to suck the life, if you will, out of the storm. it weaken it just a bit. we'll get the next advisory at 2:00. it's also slowing down a bit as it gets closer to the coast. hurricanes, you want it to move fast and quickly. you want it to keep going towards the coast barreling so it won't drop a lot of rain. unfortunately, this is not advancing. we will see this moving with a forward sweep of about 16 miles per hour. it's going to get closer to the coast. it will slow down. it will be a cat 3. you don't wan
