meteorologist michelle grossman, thank you. let's check on what's going on, on the ground in oak island, north carolina. it's where msnbc's mariana atensio finds herself now. the wind, for sure, seems to be picking up. right? >> reporter: hallie, yes. we moved a little further west from where we were at with stephanie ruhle. this is ocean crest pier. the waves and wind behind me are starting to pick up. this is an hour from north myrtle beach. it is a barrier island extremely vulnerable to the storm because you have the ocean to the south. you have the waterway to the north. and you also have the cape view river to the east. i want you to look at the scene behind me. this looks like a regular morning on the beach. you have at least ten surfers out there. you have families. you have onlookers, tourists. this is not the scene that authorities want to be looking at hours before this storm hits. and from what i've gathered with my conversations with locals, because the storm got slightly downgraded to a category 2, that gives peopl

with me now is nbc meteorologist michelle grossman. michelle, about an hour ago we got a new update. there are different formulas around different modelling for these hurricanes. what's your best information now? >> hi there, ali. yeah, we do have some big changes. we had some big-time changes overnight and we still need to tweak this as we get a little bit closer. this is what we're seeing right now, just that massive storm as you mentioned earlier. over 300 miles in diameter. we have a well defined eye, still very strong, a category 3 storm. that's a major storm, 120 mile per hour winds. we expect it to strengthen though overnight and then we'll see a little weakening tomorrow before we start to see big-time changes. by thursday 8:00 a.m., 145 miles per hour, that's the strengthening. by friday morning, this is where it gets very serious, very interesting, and really one to watch. category 3 storm right off the coast of wilmington, getting pounded with rain, getting pounded with storm surge, getting pounded with winds, and we're going

joining us now is michelle grossman, those pictures from the space station shows you how extraordinary this storm is. >> it is a strong one as expected, it's going to continue to strengthen and at least keep it's strength as it goes throughout those warm waters. category 3, hurricane florence, that's the one we're talking about, if you have not made plans, make plans, you have three days to prepare yourself. the latest category 4 is 130 miles an hour and we expect them to get higher as it approaches the coast line here. we have very warm waters, kind of fuels those storms and very low wind shear, and that's going to strengthen the storm. you want wind shear to pull apart those storms, that's not going to happen. so we expect a thursday-friday landfall on on the coast. we're going to see it moving very slowly as it makes landfall and we're going to see it sit and spin and drop a lot of rain. you want to focus on the cone, the landfall could be anywhere from cape hatteras down to charleston, and we are expecting high winds, high surf and rainfall up to 20 inches in some spots. >> thank y

i want to go to michelle grossman who is tracking the storm. michelle, this is a hard one to understand because normally a storm comes in, it gets the land, starts to move in and starts to weaken. this thing has weakened a bit, it is 75 miles per hour sustained winds but it is still a serious storm and still heading down the coast. >> absolutely. it is going to continue to follow that direction, so we are seeing it move south. you are enjoying the calm before the storm. even as recently as this morning residents were calling officials to see if they could get back into myrtle beach, officials were saying no way, and this is a good reason why. we are seeing this storm move down to the south. we are seeing these changes already with you, and we're going to see a rough afternoon and evening overnight in myrtle beach. in terms of radar we are seeing some heavy rain falling. here is myrtle beach and the center. it is going to move to the west and to the south and we will continue to see the heavy rain falling and strong winds for a duration of maybe

joining me, msnbc's michelle grossman, who is tracking the storm's path. i want to start with you. talk to me about the path and then what is the real risk here, storm surge and flooding? >> if you saw those numbers, 20 inches of rain, isolated amounts of 30 inches, storm surge up to 12 feet, which is the deadliest form of weather. we are going to be watching this closely over the next several days. it is a very serious situation. if you have not taken precaution to protect yourself, do that now. this is what the storm looks like. just a massive storm. it went through an eye wall replacement. it's starting to gather its speed up once again and strengthen. it weakened just a bit. it's on the verge of a cat 3/cat 4. 130-mile-per-hour winds. there's really nothing in its way that's going to stop it from strengthening. it's not impossible that we're going to see it into a category 5. then we come back into a category 4 storm. by thursday, 8:00 a.m., 140-mile-per-hour winds. as it gets closer to lands, we expect it to weaken a little bit. we're looking at winds

right now, meteorologist michelle grossman tracking hu s hurricane florence for us. people are breathing a sigh of relief, but it doesn't mean that the storm surge and flooding is not still a threat. >> you are right. we have been following this sunday monday. as humans we want to kind of categorize things and look at that, but it has nothing to do with the categorization of the hurricane. we are looking at flooding potentials, life-threatening flooding potentials and storm surges. we are looking at radar. you can see lots of rain has been falling. yesterday this started about 11:00 in a lot of spots so we are still seeing all of this rain falling. where you see the darker colors, it is indicating a heavier rain. a category 1 storm, we are looking at 90-miles-per-hour winds. where you see the red, we put in the colors to show how strong the storm is, we are seeing blossoming thunderstorms that could cause power outages. we have a tornado watch in place until 7:00 a.m. we need to talk about that because that's a big thing with land-falling hurricanes. the latest advis

joining me live is michelle grossman and msnbc's -- who's live in north carolina.et's start with you. there have been a few changes including when landfall may occur. >> it looks to be a little bit later. we also had another change where it weakened just a bit. we're going through an eye wall change. that's going to change throughout the next couple of hours. we're sort of on the verge between a cat 3 and a cat 4 right on the dividing line there. it is going to slow down the closer it gets to the coast. right now not moving fairly quickly, 16 miles per hour, we're going to move that forward motion west, northwest. we get closer to the coast, we're going to kind of see it slow down. that's not good news for people along the coast. that's not good news for people inland. this is going to be a huge rainmaker and probably one of the biggest problems with this. this is thursday at 8:00 a.m., and then as we get closer to friday, the initial thinking it was thursday into friday, it looks now that it's going to be closer to friday morning, a major storm and a cat 3 storm.

. >> joining me now is msnbc's marianna atencio along the north carolina coast, and msnbc michelle grossman, and michelle, first to you, and looking at the storm track, and what are we preparing to, and then to marianna. >> hi there, andrea. yes, we are looking at a category 4 storm, and right on the borderline of the cat 3 and 4 and it did weaken, and it is go ing through the eyewall replacement, but it is going to change. as the next couple of hours, it is go ing to strengthen again, and encountering nothing to slow it down. so we expect it to remain on the path. this is what it is looking like right now, and just a huge storm, and the eyewall is a t textbook hurricane. and you open up the book, and this is exactly what you would see and not good news for the southeast coast of the u.s. we are looking at winds at 130 miles per hour, and we will see the winds strengthen as we head through the next couple off hours, and later on wednesday, 150 miles per hour, and this is what we are expecting. we do have a little bit of a change. we expected a late thursday and early friday landfall and now

let's get out to michelle grossman with the latest there >> yeah.e are tracking gordon, churning in the gulf of mexico. the good news is most of the heavy rains in the gulf of mexico, that will change drastically over the next couple of hours impacting the gulf coast states later today we're seeing the location 2 a28 miles east-southeast of the mississippi river. strength is 65 mchiles per hour. it's moving quickly. that's good that way it can't gain a lot of strength we could see it make landfall as a category 1 hurricane it would be a weak category 1. 75-mile-per-hour winds this is the timeline here, 8:00 a.m., 65 miles per hour, maintaining that strength. by tuesday, 7:00 p.m., later tonight, 75 her hour it will weaken as it hits land so that's good news. before that we're looking at gusty winds, hurricane warnings, tropical storm warnings. we could see rainfall up to 8 inches in some spots dom, back to you >> all right thank you very much for that update. >>> an extremely powerful typhoon just made landfall there western japan. it's one of the s

meteorologist michelle grossman joins us now on this latest storm. you know it's serious because michelle is in here with me. this is big, it's slow moving and it's powerful. >> you're right, there is no place i'd rather be. this is a serious situation and we'll continue to watch this over the next several days. time is of the essence. we have a few days before it does make landfall, so make your plans now. we're looking at a destructive storm by thursday and friday. you can see by this graphic here how con do you sducive we are f strong storms. we have two in the atlantic, two in the pacific and even one around texas. we saw this on the satellite a few minutes ago and we're seeing this eye form, just a perfect storm, really. we'll continue to see this as we move across the atlantic here. winds at 130 miles per hour. we're going to see strengthening over the next several days. the ingredients are just right for blossoming storms. we have very warm waters. that helps to fuel the storms. that's in place. the next one is a light wind sheer. wind sheer te

msnbc meteorologist michelle grossman is here tracking the storm. i see it there behind you. it looks like quite the monster. what do we know at this point about timing? what do we know about where it's expected to strike? >> you said it, we don't have to know much about hurricanes, right, to know this is a serious situation. a textbook hurricane. we're looking at all the outflow. the red color indicating the high cloud tops, indicating the thunderstorms around this. almost a perfect eye. we did have two changes overnight with this. we had an eye wall replacement which tends to suck the life, if you will, out of the storm. it weaken it just a bit. we'll get the next advisory at 2:00. it's also slowing down a bit as it gets closer to the coast. hurricanes, you want it to move fast and quickly. you want it to keep going towards the coast barreling so it won't drop a lot of rain. unfortunately, this is not advancing. we will see this moving with a forward sweep of about 16 miles per hour. it's going to get closer to the coast. it will slow down. it will be a cat 3. you don't wan

with all of that happening, let's get a check now on your weather with michelle grossman.c weather event. >> where it stands now, that's the potential. you have four days to prepare if you live anywhere along the southeast coast. right now, already a category 2 storm. it's strengthening by the minute. it really doesn't have any ingredients that it's going to run into that will weaken it, so we do expect it to strengthen over the next several days. right now 105 miles an hour winds. we expect it cto be a category storm later this afternoon. by wednesday a category 4 storm. you can see it kind of stays on that trajectory, doesn't weaken at all, actually strengthens, has low wind shear. it's in very warm waters. that's going to help to strengthen it. we have steering mechanisms, an area of high pressure that will help to steer it to the southeast coast. what's going to happen that's going to make matters worse, we have that high in place that's going to block it from moving. it's going to move very slow and bring drenching rains, 10 up to 20 inches of rain in some spots. this

the coast of the carolinas to our weather center here in new york, let's start this hour with michelle grossman. what's the late sneft. >> ali, thanks so much. we're looking at a strong storm. it really hasn't changed much in the past four days. we are starting to see it gain strength once again you can see that perfect eye right there. we're going to see this stay in tact over the next several days. hurricane florence, 130 mile per hour winds. kind of on the everyone of a strong category three, a weak category four. here it goes throughout time moving at 16 miles per hour, by thursday, 140 mile per hour wind winds this is friday. we have seen it slow down a bit, we expect it to be a category three storm. i don't want you to get stuck on that number. it's still a major storm, a storm with very high winds and surge. that will be the problem. and tons of rain. we're looking at destructive rain as we head throughout the next couple days. i want you to focus inland as well. we're going to see this hurricane sit and spin over the same area for days and days. this is going to be a story that lasts a

nbc news meteorologist michelle grossman join us live. >> officially, the seventh named storm in theantic season. gord gordon, a tropical storm as of the 8:00 advisory. currently it is located 85 miles southeast of marco island. it's moving at 45 miles per hour. so really jumped up since the latest advisory. we'll see it move through the gulf over the next several days. by wednesday, 1:00, making landfall. before that, we're going to see a lot of rain in a lot of places. not a great day especially in southern florida on this labor day. a lot of soggy picnics out there. the western edge of florida, down to southern florida, and as we go through the next couple of days, this will be the bull's-eye for all the rain. we're looking at a lot of rain right now. look at the onshore flow. the darker colors is indicating the heaviest rain. very heavy rain down through the keys. so not a great spot today. that will be the case throughout the day, before it moves off to the west here. as we go throughout tuesday, we're looking at anywhere from 4 up to 6 inches of rain. even up to 8 in some spots

i want to bring in meteorologist michele grossman to tell us about this storm. >> we're focusing on water. we're to concussion on the life threatening surge. this is what it looks like right now. a big storm about 300 miles wide, even 400 miles wide. it's moving fairly slow right now but really slow down as we head towards the overnight hours. these are the latest numbers as of 2:00. ali mentioned we have one coming out at 5:00. category 2 storm. it's a strong category 2 storm. but this is what we're seeing already. ali mentioned this depends where you are along the carolina coast. some seeing terrible weather. ali not seeing terrible weather but will be. this is what we're looking at. radar is active. it's lit up. lots of colors. darker colors indicated the heavier rain. buford has been seeing rain for hours and hours and we're looking at those darker colors. we'll look at those storm totals in a little bit. see that pink line that's a tornado watch and also something we have to worry about as we go through the overnight hours. the worst will be sundown tonight into sundown tomorrow nigh
