let's bring in michelle grossman in for janessa good morning >> good morning, finally some snow, maybe flurries for some of us the first flakes of the season we have seeing some blue, the last six hours that's developing snow so what we have here is a two-part system. we have anal interpreta clip tore the north it doesn't have moisture with it to the south a coastal low that will strengthen throughout today into tomorrow morning. that will bring a chance for those showers. most of that moisture is well into the ocean to the south. most of the big cities, new york city, philadelphia, washington, will miss out. they still could see winter weather. it will bring more snow to the great lakes. most of that snow will be to the north, mainly in the st this in warming in the central and southern plains, temperatures into the 80s in some spots in texas. that warmth is going to head on east to the northeast, mount atlantic some spots, new york city could be int mid-60s d.c. into the lower 70 we'll talk about that coming up. >> i can't wait to hear about it and make our plans from it thanks, mich

time for the weather, let's go to meteorologist michelle grossman. ooking out there? >> good morning, we're looking for western snow and potential for severe weather so that's where we start into the evening hours. the storm prediction center has issued an enhanced risk of threats, 3 out of 5 on the scale. keen million on at risk. eastern arkansas to northern mississippi, northern alabama into tennessee, damaging winds, and we could even see a few tornadoes. that's what we're going to be watching closely as we head throughout the afternoon and evening hours. also excessive rain, localized flooding, up to three inches in spots. we saw that tornado outbreak early in december. stormy end to december, today, we have the fuel of those really warm temperatures in the south. and the trigger that is sort of like the cold that's going to spark the chance for these storms. and the threat is going to move off to the east tomorrow, but still we could see thunderstorms in the southeast. otherwise, on the cold side of the storm, we'll see wintry rain. 81 in galvest

michelle grossman is joining me now with a look at the holiday forecast. w england we could definitely see snow, in the northern plains as well. most of us are looking at sunshine, warm terms, above-normal term, in the west we've had storm after storm coming. believe it or not, this is a bit of a lull before we see another storm come on shore tomorrow. even up to 6 inches in some part. for the snowfall, we could see up to eight feet in the highest elevations of the sierras. from the northwest to the southwest into the rockies, but east of the rockies we are looking good. as far as the snowfall fracture, that's two feet. three feet in pink, and eight feet in some parts. i know many of us are dreaming for a white christmas. for many of us, though, you're going to need the sunglasses, we are looking at sunshine, temperatures in the 70s and 80s. record highs in the southern plains. aaron? >> michelle grossman, we appreciate it. thank you. >>> as we speak, there are two restaurant owners traveling hundreds of miles to tornado-ravaged kentucky. they'll join mess

michelle grossman, what kind of weather will we have as we ring in the new year tomorrow night?inglike temperatures, winter weather, the potential for severe weather. let's take a look at what's happening right now. we had a tornado watch in parts of alabama and georgia, but that has been allowed to expire. you can still see some lightning strikes on radar through alabama, georgia, even into south carolina. some light rain in the mid-atlantic. then we have wintry weather along the great lakes. we're looking at a marginal risk for severe storms. we could see winds gusting to over 60 miles an hour and some hail in some of the storms. it's due to the warm air in place. feeling like spring once again today. 83 degrees in baton rouge, 22 degrees higher than what is typical this time of year. in nashville, 68 degrees, 19 degrees above normal. sbeechb pittsburgh, we're looking at 57 degrees. 62 in norfolk. atlanta, 75. 85 in new orleans. we're going to keep that warmth in place and keep the threat for showers and severe storms in place for friday, saturday, into sunday. >>> talking abo

we turn to michelle grossman for the weather. what's it like out there, michelle?ll. let's take a look first at winter alerts. they're stretching coast to coast from the west to the upper great lakes, upper midwest to the northeast. 25 million people impacted today with that persistent snow across the west. then we could see slick roadways due to a mixture of snow and rain, even sleet in some spots. so the setup for the west, it continues. heavy snow and wind in the four corners and winds gusting to 50 miles an hour. not feeling great. by tomorrow, we have another storm system that will slide down the coast. it's going to bring heavy rain and snow to parts of the pacific northwest. we're seeing a lot of rain in some spots, especially los angeles county, possibly localized flooding there, especially where there are some burned areas. let's talk about that bitter blast because we're so cold this morning. it's 15 degrees below zero in glasgow, but 30 below zero and minus 18 in bismarck. jonathan? >> bundle up, folks. michelle grossman, thank you so much for being here

i want to bring in meteorologist michelle grossman who's been tracking these major weather events sinceappen, michelle? it seems like every one of these events gets worse with more loss of life. >> yeah. you know, and i think that's going to be the bigger weather question. it's going to be the climate change, it's going to be the warming planet. but i think right now we have to focus on, you know, this is probably the deadliest tornado event for the month of december. it's certainly quite possibly and most likely, most definitely going to be the deadliest event in kentucky in history. and it will probably maybe be in the top five overall in our u.s. history. those are lists because you do not want to be on. those are things we're certainly going to look at and talk about and delve in deep over the next several years. here are the stats, top five deadliest kentucky tornadoes. what stands out to me is the dates. look at the year. the last deadliest tornado, which we're going to top with this one, was in 1890. before that it was 1917, 1925. kentucky has not seen a storm to this mandating n

let's bring in nbc meteorologist michelle grossman. so michelle, what 12 million more still at risk of severe weather today. >> yeah, hi there, alex. the good news with that statement is we're not expecting what we saw last night. we have a really powerful cold front moving through, warm and humid air mass. we could see some strong storms, but mainly it's going to be some winds, it's going to be ferocious rains with flooding. not what we saw last night. this was really unusual. from a meteorology standpoint, it was historical, it was devastating, it was destructive. from a humanity aspect it was so sad and just really, really unusual. unusual in terms of the power, the strength, unusual for this time of year. unusual for the location. it was so far north, normally these places we're talking about snow cover on the ground, not a super cell tornado. let's take a look at the tornado outbreak in terms of numbers. over 30 tornado reports. that doesn't mean tornados. that means reports. so one tornado can cause several reports through cities

meteorologist michelle grossman is here. michelle, what can we expect? >> hi there, katy. we have winter weather in the west, spring-like weather, 70s and 80s in the southeast, and we're tracking some storms in the southeast as well. we have avoid from alabama, a roof being torn off. we had stormy weather through the overnight hours. this morning we even had a tornado watch that expired right around 6:00 a.m. a lot of destruction there. that's the biggest threat right now, these really gusty, dangerous winds. let's look at what's happening right now in terms of radar. you can see it lit up in the southeast. we're looking at a lot of rain and we're looking at heavy rain. where you see the darker colors, lightning associated with these storms, flashes on the radar. also it's moving very slowly and over the same area. so flash flooding is going to be a concern, is a concern, and continues to be a concern through the next several hours, afternoon and evening. so this is what it looks like in terms of what we're expecting over the next several hours. we're under a slight risk f

. >> we're going to bring in our nbc meteorologist right now, michelle grossman, i mean, one heck of a night, and this is not over yet. we've still got storms coming our way. >> yeah, we still have a cold front moving through these really warm air masses, and it was a tough night for many, so i mean, specifically speaking about the mayfield tornado, we're talking about devastation, deadly, historical and just really unusual. i mean, these storms usually happen typically in the spring, maybe late fall, october, early november, but for december and two weeks from christmas, to see this type of system move through, it's really unheard of. so let's talk about the overall outbreak and then we'll move specifically to the super cell. so we saw 32 tornado reports. that doesn't mean 32 tornados, but it means reports. they move through towns and we see the reports, surveys go in. they tell us how many tornados go through. it's going to be a couple of days before we get the whole picture on this. as we zoom in closer on this super cell that mike was just talking about, this stretched and tracke
