here is meteorologist michelle grossman with the forecast. jonathan. we continue to watch a flood threat today. yesterday in st. louis nine inches of rain fell, smashed records from the 1800s and eight inches fell in just six hours. we had water rescues and one fatality as well. today we're watching the threat for flooding today. let's look at radar and where we're looking at the flood watches because we're looking at heavy rain falling once again in st. louis. we're going to see pockets of heavy rain as we go throughout the day. it's like train cars along a train track going over the same places over and over again. we have a very slow-moving front that will produce heavy storms. we're going to see lots of rainfall. we could see flash flooding once again. we'll continue to watch this on this wednesday. the likeliest chance is in west virginia, parts of kentucky, tennessee, western virginia where we're expecting the chance of flash flooding. anywhere from 4 to 6 inches of rain is possible. where you see those darker colors the reds and yellows

let's turn to michelle grossman who joins us this morning. where are we looking >> good morning to you both. so the good news is we're going to have some relief in the northeast. we're looking at some really high temperatures before that. it's going to come across with strong storms move including this afternoon take a look at what's happening now and what we expect because we're looking at some heat alerts across the country 41 million impacted by heat, whether advisory, watch, warning for the middle of the country, the plains, mid-mississippi valley the pacific northwest now looking at some heat watches and heat warnings. we're looking at the weather story there turning for for a heat wave. boston, philadelphia, you have heat today before that cold front moves through. coast to coast, heat today, once again. 97 in portlandhoomdty. we're warm in philadelphia, d.c., richmond with sunshine a cold front is going to bring some relief. we have a tornado watch this morning, parts of northwestern pennsylvania we'll talk about that cold front moving

michelle grossman, now, michelle, will eastern kentucky get a break from the storm tonight? >> good evening, we are looking at a little break tonight and tomorrow, but unfortunately the rain returns on sunday. i will show you the set up, we are seeing a little bit of rain tonight but not the heavy stuff we saw just a day ago. we have nine inches in kentucky yesterday, that was in 12 hours. you see the darker colors appear , or brighter colors, the yellows, reds, oranges, those are really heavy downpours. mainly south of kentucky there will be portions of arkansas, also mississippi, into alabama as well. also the carolinas on the mid atlantic. if you move in a little closer we are getting a small break in kentucky, a couple bubbles of heavy rain falling, then we get that break tomorrow before we see the rain returning on sunday. here is the set up. frontal boundary, the what that brought the rain to st. louis, moving very, very slowly, nearly stationary and moving to the north. right now further to the south, so tomorrow we will see from texas to the carolinas really high rai

we will bring in nbc meteorologist michelle grossman to ask, is there any relief in sight? >> i wish i could say there was. we have been tracking a heat wave for the past month and two weeks. it goes on. it's intense. it's dangerous. and it's potentially deadly. we will continue to track. at the central and southern plains, the heat waves will go on. let's take a look at the alerts in place, they are far ranging, from the southwest into the central and southern plains, parts of the northeast as well. 80 million americans are impacted by heat advisories, that is the dark pink, than the lighter pink is excessive-y warnings. -- still hot for so many. the cold front that sinking down from canada will bring some relief, but most of us will be sweltering today. also tomorrow. it looks like the peak of the heat in the northeast will be tomorrow. temperatures are in the triple digits. in kansas city, oklahoma city, factor in the humidity, it feels like 105 in dallas, evades like 107 in memphis, it feels like 10 100 degrees in d.c.. that will be the story today and tomorrow. tempera

. >>> let's get a check of weather as we head to meteorologist michelle grossman for the forecast. morning to you. >> good morning. great to see you on a friday morning. and unfortunately, we are tracking lots of showers and storms. at least to kick off the first part of this holiday weekend. the radar lit up this morning, with showers in the rockies, also parts of the ohio ral are valley into the great lakes, and the southeast, too, we're watching storms for days and days and continuing to watch showers and storms over the next few days and you can see that happening right now on the radar, with heavier rainfall in those darker colors, so up to seven inches of rain in some spots, that is going to cause some flash flooding. where you see the darker colors, the yellow, the reds, the oranges, the heaviest rain, so soaking rains along the carolina coast, into the southeast, and we are watching a severe threat for saturday, no doubt going to cause some problems on the roadways and also in the air, 48 million at risk, and for some strong storms and we could see damaging winds and winds

let's bring in meteorologist, michelle grossman. big question to you, when will this heat streak and? >> hi there, alex. well, organist a little relief in the northeast. as you said, this is the peak day for the heat in the northeast. it's gonna go on in the central and southern plains, then organ a turn of the pacific northwest where we're looking at the next heat wave there. it's so dry, it's so hot, we have that wildfire risk in the northwest, that's gonna be the next big major weather story. let's take a look right now, we're looking at 90 million americans across the country, whether they're under heat advisory, heat watch, heat warning, excessive heat warning, that includes philadelphia, also parts of oklahoma, we have a heat watch in eugene and also membered. that will be the big weather story next week. let's take a look at temperatures, it's another dangerous day with sweltering heat. we're looking at temperatures climbing into the 90s, climbing into the triple digits. dallas today, 101. you're gonna feel like 103. the heat

joining us with the very latest, sam brock in dallas, texas, and michelle grossman. sam, how much strain is this putting on the power grid there in texas? >> reporter: among experts, lindsey, good to be with you, who study this issue, they're concerned. if you look actually at the energy providers themselves, they say we're fine. it was 109 yesterday. they project 107 today. this is a real-time gauge which shows green. this is how much energy is available, the reserves in the system. people here might use 79,000 or 80,000. it's about a 5% or 6% margin. should something happen to some of the generation, that could dip below 3,000. that's when those alerts start getting sent out to people to try to conserve their energy. it doesn't take that much. back on may 13th, a half dozen generators in the state were tripped up. it went offline. as that's happening, it's only a fraction of the overall generation, maybe 1%. that was enough to trigger it below 3,000. it's really that thin. take into consideration the overall aging of the infrastructure. this is not specific to just
