. >>> let's bring in meteorologist michelle grossman. michelle, where is the storm headed next? >> hi there, hallie. we're looking at a very strong powerful 2 storm. across the gulf of mexico, still looking at winds 110 miles per hour. that's a really strong category 2 storm. there it goes across the gulf, and notice how it restrengthens to a category 1 storm. landfall will be somewhere in northeastern mexico, southern texas that will yet to be determined over the next few days. hot in the tropics. hot across the u.s. too. we're looking at 148 million people under heat alerts across the west. this is going to be days and days, into next tuesday at least. we're looking at the heat and humidity into the southwestern states. temperatures into the triple-digits in many spots. hallie? >> michelle, thank you. >>> as americans celebrate the fourth of july, law enforcement is on high alert across the country. emilie ikeda is joining us now. emilie, police are deploying more resources than ever before on this holiday, right? >> hallie, that's right. police beefing up security on both sid

also with us, michelle grossman. steve, let's start with you. a lot of 4th of july celebrations across california. they have been nixed due to the weather. what's the latest on the wildfires? there are dozens throughout the state. >> reporter: there are. the one here we should say nixed as well. i'm convinced it should have been nixed regardless of the fire just because of how hot it is. of course, the flames still encroaching here. 12,000 structures and homes and neighborhoods. this is one edge of a double-edged sword. the other is a good one. the winds have finally died down in this area. it has given firefighters just enough of a foothold to put some containment on this fire. yesterday was a very good firefighting day. the winds have stagnated, which means they got 7% containment on a 3,500 acre fire, which is quite significant considering what they were dealing with before. 30 mile an hour winds, red flag warnings. that's all died down. the damage has been done. four structures, including the home behind me, destroyed. four people injured. 2

joining us with the latest on beryl's path and the extreme weather they're watching, michelle grossmanxas now watching very closely. >> yeah, we're going to watch it very closely over the weekend. we could see that turn right into the southern part of texas. we're going to watch that. right now we're still seeing it as a major hurricane. this is so early in the season. this is more typical of september, october, we don't typically get a lot of major hurricanes and especially this early. so category 3 at the moment, the location is 95 miles west, southwest of grand cayman islands bringing those high surfs, the high rainfall, also really windy conditions. winds are at 115 miles per hour. it's moving quickly. this has been moving quickly its entire life span, and that's good news because we want this out of here. moving to the northwest at 18 miles per hour. we have alerts all along the yucatan peninsula. still have hurricane warnings for the cayman islands, that's where you see the red here, and then you see all the alerts dotting the yucatan peninsula. we're going to watch that over the

michelle grossman tracking the brutal heatwave for us. michelle, we had a weekend. we now have a monday, and we have more heat. >> that's right, yes. monday. comes quickly, doesn't it? we're looking at 24 million americans under heat alerts in the west, north central, california, into the great basin. we're going to see temperatures soaring into the 90s, into the 100s. dangerous heat does continue. we also need the umbrella in many spots. we have the front stretching from the great lakes to the northeast. we're expecting the showers and storms, and we're going to see showers and storms the south central states, the southeast, into the carolinas and the midatlantic. it's a long stretching front that is going to stay putt over the next couple of days. that's today. as we near wednesday, notice the green staying in place. you see a little yellow. that's where we could see heavier downpours and the risk for flooding along the gulf coast as well. but that rain stretches into the northeast once again. parts of the great lakes, looking at monsoonal showers on wednesday int

nbc's guad venegas who's covering beryl, and nbc meteorologist michelle grossman.now you've been on the road here following several of the wildfires there in california. tell us about what you're seeing. >> reporter: yeah, we're literally popping out of our car here in olivehurst. it's about a 200 mile drive south to where another fire has popped up. 'tis the season, right, richard? this fire danger extremely elevated right now with conditions that we're looking at. this is the french fire, it's in mariposa, california, which is often thought about as the gateway to yosemite, a lot of tourists go there. a lot of people trying to go into the park wind up there. that town right now is under siege. it is a fast-moving fire. 840 acres, it is threatening thousands of homes, thousands of people evacuated right now as they're trying to get control of this fire. meanwhile, still here in butte county where we are, thousands of people evacuated from the thompson fire, one of the nine fires that you mentioned. many of them had to flee with the shirts on their backs. we spoke

let's turn to michelle grossman, rain, not where it's needed the most. >> yeah, that's right.that region we could see dry thunderstorms, where the rain evaporates and lightning hits dry vegetation. the wildfire season continues through october. peak season ends in october. we're talking about an unsettled south. this is where the rain is falling. we're looking at heavy rain, too, because we have a front that's the trigger for downpours. that's going to lead to the chance for flash flooding. there's that front. another day of storms developing in the southeast. the severe risk is low, that's good news, but flooding is possible in some spots, we could lead to flash flooding which is dangerous if you're out and about in your car. scattered showers along the gulf coast once again. starting out your weekend wet, too. and areas of rain entering the midwest as well. 10 million peoe impactedpl above normal. and we do have heat alerts in portions of the northern plains, temperatures into the 90s, and in the south, unsettled with showers and storms. 81 in shreveport. all right, that's y

let's turn now to meteorologist michelle grossman with the latest on the fire threat and the rising heat on the plains. good morning, michelle. >> good morning, frances. so good to see you. we're going to see the threat continuing in the intermountain west and the air quality alerts. the smoke all the way to the northern plains in the midwest. that's going to be a big story as we continue throughout the next couple of weeks. this is going to be a big story for some time to come. also talking about those toasty conditions in portions of the central plains. that's building heat as we go throughout the next couple of days. temperatures into the upper 90s, the 100s. you factor in the humidity. it will feel like over 110 in some spots. as we move further to the east, we're looking at storms, rain from the midwest to portions of the southeast. heavy rain throughout the appalachians, could see a sense of rainfall there. and scattered showers throughout new england, also portions of the northeast, we're going to see a series of fronts kind of keeping us unsettled in the east as we go throughout

let's turn now to nbc meteorologist michelle grossman, who is tracking a hurricane brewing off the coast of barbados. hi michelle. good morning. good morning francis. and it's a major hurricane, a category four yesterday. now a category three. we do expect to strengthen once again. but this is a big story because we are looking at the strength of august or september so early in the season to have a major hurricane. it will impact the windward islands in just a few hours. we're looking at it 110 miles south southeast of barbados. winds at 120mph, and it's moving west at 20mph. so we do have tropical alerts across the windward islands, throughout portions of hispaniola, as well. a tropical storm watch there. we do expect it to make its westward track as we go throughout the next couple of days, again strengthening once again later on today to a category four storm, then back down to a category three storm. we're going to see it pass to the south of hispaniola, also cuba by wednesday at 7:00. category two storm saying that on thursday. and then it's going to cross over the yucatan peninsula

let's bring in now nbc meteorologist michelle grossman, who's tracking, among other things, now, the hurricane brewing off the coast of barbados. so much to watch as we start off the week. michelle there is. hi there. francis. yeah another really busy week. first day of july and the tropics looks more like september. we have a major hurricane in the atlantic moving into the caribbean. it will impact the windward islands in just a few hours with life threatening winds, life threatening storm surge. really heavy rainfall that's going to lead to flash flooding, mudslides, landslides. so something to watch over the next 24 hours. right now, a category three storm with winds at 120mph. the location is 110 miles south southeast of barbados. it's moving quickly right now, west at 20mph. we do expect it to continue on that westward track. we tropical alerts extending across the windward islands, also through hispaniola, because we expect it to move south of puerto rico, cuba and also hispaniola. so as we go throughout time here, we expect it to restrengthen to a category four storm. yesterday
