i am not a murderer. >> reporter: the only victim to appear, michelle knight, who said she spent "11 ver got shorter. days turned into nights, nights turned into days, years turned into eternity. >> reporter: knight has told police she was pregnant at least five times but was starved and punched until she eventually miscarried. dna tests have confirmed castro was the father of amanda berry's young daughter. when we were in cleveland at the time of the women's rescue, a source familiar with the investigation told cnn that when berry went into labor, castro ordered michelle knight to deliver the child. the baby was delivered in a plastic tub or pool to contain the mess. and the source says once the child was born there were moments of horror and panic. the child stopped breathe aepg, according to the source. everyone screamed, and ariel castro allegedly threatened to kill michelle knight if the baby didn't survive. according to a police report, michelle knight said she breathed into the child's mouth to keep her alive. the evidence that the women were bound, that chains and ropes were i

ariel castro, a bus driver, living on the west side of cleveland, abducted michelle knight first. that was 11 years ago. michelle was just 21 years old when castro lured her into his house with the promise of a puppy. a puppy for her son. she went to his house and was held there as prisoner for more than a decade. during which police were not even looking for her. a missing persons report was filed, but they and some members of her family thought that she'd left home on her own volition. for 11 years, no one knew what had become of her. amanda berry was walking home from her job at burger king, in her uniform, when abducted by ariel castro. it was a day before her 17th birthday. a year later, gina dejesus, 14 years old, was kidnapped while walking the 40 blocks from her school to her house. castro apparently drove past his own daughter who needed a ride so that he could kidnap gina. he did so by saying that he needed her help in finding his daughter. the one that he'd just driven by. when the story of gina's disappearance made it into the news, castro's estranged son wrote an artic

thursday was the first time since that day that michelle knight was in the same room with the man who held her captive and tortured her for 11 years. and knight was the only one of the women who came to the hearing, where ariel castro learned his fate after pleading guilty to 937 counts, including rape, kidnapping, and aggravated assault. life in prison without parole, plus an additional 1,000-year sentence. before sentencing, castro delivered a long, rambling, horrifying statement, defending his crimes. but the most compelling moment of the hearing came when michelle knight, the first of the three women to be taken, made a statement of her own, telling the story of how she survived against all odds, in part thanks to her friendship with one of castro's other hostages, gina dejesus. >> gina was my teammate. she never let me fall, i never let her fall. she nursed me back to health when i was dying from his abuse. my friendship with her is an unending debt, was good out of this situation. we said we would some day make it out alive and we did. >> knight also addressed castro directly. >

you talk about michelle knight. it just reiterated how castro caused the death of her unborn child and went into more detail about that. but it also talked about how castro threatened them and made them feel powerless. one way he did that was by telling them that there were other victims before them, and according to this document from the prosecution's office, he told the victims some of the victims prior made it home and others did not indicating that other victims were killed. so this was his way of controlling the women and making them feel powerless. it talks about how he controlled their every movement through food and drink. in fact, it said they weren't allowed to use the bathroom on the first floor, that there was a plastic toilet in the rooms that was emptied infrequently. really disturbing details here. but it also talked about the courageousness of these women, how they kept a diary detailing the abuse they went through and talked about their dreams of making it home one day. of course, we now know that

think the best moment was when the judge after he finished his craziness, the judge turned to michelle knight and said, i am so sorry. i acknowledge your extraordinary restraint listening to what he just said and what the judge was referring to was this monster saying, and michelle's family didn't even care about her. they weren't even looking for her. if i had been michelle's lawyer, i would have objected because under ohio law, as is true in every state in this country, victims are entitled to be treated with respect and dignity. that was disrespectful and undignified. i would have objected just to make the point that what he said about her at that moment in time was gratuitous, it was harmful and it was absolutely out of line. >> i think the judge should have shut him up. >> each of those victims saying he's not taken their dignity, he's not taken their life. they was' used the platform appropriately in what they were prepared for meaning michelle was able to come in herself. the other two women sent statements through their families. his words will never take their dignity and that's what
