i want to start with michelle kosinski. at the white house where we know the president has been briefed on the attack. what are white house officials saying, michelle? >> they're not responding directly to this because it is still developing, but it comes only days after we heard the president and white house officials while they were traveling abroad express their continued concerns over the fact that isis and other terror groups still had the ability to carry out attacks like this and they keep happening. what we do know is that the white house is watching this very closely. going into this holiday weekend, the president wants to stay briefed as it develops. he has already been briefed by lisa monaco, his assistant for homeland security and counter terror. we've seen the white house have to respond to these kinds of attacks and so many times recently and to questions of what does this mean for isis' ability? what about the strategy to fight it and the threat level at home? that threat obviously does still exist and what we

michelle kosinski is in charlotte where clinton will be holding that big event with the president just hours from now. >> reporter: this is the kind of picture that every candidate would want, provided that the president is popular. and president obama is extremely popular among democrats. it's like 90% approval rating. the campaign wants to see these pictures broadcast of them arriving to charlotte on air force one together, descending the stairs together, then shoulder to shoulder on this stage at this rally in the key battleground state of north carolina. at the same time donald trump is also going to be in north carolina tonight in a different city, in raleigh. and he's been tweeting out criticism of the obama/clinton trip. his latest tweet says taxpayers are paying a fortune for the use of air force one on the campaign trail by president obama and crooked hillary. total disgrace. to be honest this comes up whenever a president uses air force one for campaign travel. but here's how it breaks down. it's the same for everybody. although the rules have changed some over the years. in

michelle cos s michelle kosinski is following this. what is the white house monitor sng. >> they are going to pay close attention to what's happening around the world as that relates to a potential risk here in the u.s. we know the president was briefed on bangladesh as it happened. he wanted to be kept informed through the weekend as developments happen. we know that the white house is watching. they put out a statement that says things like this only strengthen the u.s.'s resolve to support the government. as horrific as this string of attack has been, the one reassurance is what we hear from u.s. officials over and over again. now, there is no specific credible threat within the u.s. what they want to be careful of, though, are the possibility of copy cap attacks. things that have been planned under the radar, the type of attack that keeps them up at night, the most difficult to prevent. it is something that we hear repeated often. right now, no specific threat targeting any known targets here in the u.s. >> what is the president up

i want to bring in our white house correspondent michelle kosinski over at the white house. the president said he didn't listen to donald trump's speech last night, acceptance speech of the republican presidential nomination, but he read some of the transcripts, and he simply suggested that trump was way wrong on several important issues. what did he say about that? >> the president wanted to launch right into this. and wanted to counter that rhetoric that we've been hearing at the convention all week. the first thing he started talking about was the relationship between the u.s. and mexico. but he wanted to mention the rhetoric that we've been hearing right off the bat. and in talking specifically about this speech last night, he wanted to pick it apart for some of the fears that he said have no basis in fact. some of what we've heard. in fact, he used pieces of -- he mentioned crime and violence, that in the president's view don't jive with most people's experiences. he cited some statistics. this is stuff we've been hearing from the white house lately, that overall, even
