senior white house correspondent michelle kosinski joins me on the phone what you heard? >> that is how quick this happened. a call was made. there was reach out from the chinese government to the u.s. we don't knee the details of the call. we don't expect to get it. what the white house is saying is they confirm that china has already reached out but they don't want to get into diplomatic discussions. so how deep this discussion went we're not sure at this point but it is very telling how quickly this happened. i mean, as soon as we knew about this call between donald trump and taiwan, before we even knew the details. and he's now tweeting that it was they who reached out to him. that is how quickly china was reaching out to the u.s. what the white house has been saying is kind of a very, very careful response. that it is committed to the one-china policy as elise was saying. and she also mentioned the pakistan call. the pakistani government -- out the call with donald trump and directly quoted him ads saying to the prime minister you are a terrific guy. you have a very

first to our white house correspondent michelle kosinski. you were there at the president's news conference. there were a lot of questions about russian hacking. >> reporter: this was abhour and a half long news conference focused on the hacking, russian influence on the election. you could almost picture vladimir putin watching this and being very pleased with the turmoil he's been able to cause. you're right, the president said it without saying it, making it very clear, though, that he does believe that putin himself had a direct role in all of this. the president defended his administration's actions, defended the fbi, when asked if this was a free and fair election he could only go so far as to say that the voting process wasn't tampered with, calling all of this a clarifying moment for america. president obama defended his administration's actions when it came to the announcement that the russians had hacked the democratic national committee. >> once we had clarity and certainty around what in fact had happened, we publicly announced t

michelle kosinski of cnn. >> reporter: thank you. this week we heard hillary clinton talk about how she thinks that the fbi director's most recent announcement made a difference in the outcome of the election and we also just heard in an op-ed her campaign chairman talk about something being deeply broken within the fbi. he talked about thinking that the investigation early on was lackadaisical in his words. so what do you think about those comments? do you think there's any truth to them? do you think there's a danger there that they're calling into question the integrity of institutions in a similar way that donald trump's team has done? and the second part to that is that donald trump's team repeatedly -- i guess giving the indication that the investigation of the russian hack as well as the retaliation might not be such a priority once he's in office. so what do you think the risk is there and are you going to talk to him directly about some of those comments he made? >> well, on the latter point, as i said before, the transition

for that we go to michelle kosinski, our cnn white house correspondent. so we know this will be different and separate than what the fbi already did before the election when they announced they believe the russian government was hacking into different entities including the dean see and the clinton campaign with a view of influencing the election. that's where that ended and that's all that was released publicly. this new review the white house has just ordered the white house says will be a deep dive, a much broader look, it's going to look at patterns of hacking, again focusing on elections, it's going to look at the state of defenses and what lessons have been learned as well as what lessons need to be learned. the most interesting thing we just found out from the white house is that this is going to go all the way back to the 2008 presidential election. it emerged years later from that that u.s. officials suspected china back in 2008 of hacking into both the obama and mccain campaigns. that information wasn't released publicly, china denied it. but th

let's get the latest from michelle kosinski. >> we know that almost immediately, as soon as the world got word of this very interesting phone call, chinese officials reached out to the white house. that says a lot. what isn't saying a lot right now is the white house itself. they don't want to comment on diplomatic conversations. about you let's just say that this was a discussion that happened, and china has questions. well, there's really not a lot that the white house can convey at this point. they likely emphasized what the white house has said publicly about this. that the white house adheres to the one china policy. meaning they believe taiwan is a part of china, and they address diplomatic relations accordingly. but they can't lend china any real clarity on how relations and diplomacy will change. this is the same problem the president has had on his recent foreign trip. where world leaders want to know what's going to change and what's going to happen. the white house doesn't have the answers. >> michelle, thank you. joining me now is former ambassador christopher hill, served
