michelle grossman. michelle, what is going on with the weather in the u.s. right now? and what's coming next? >> i know. hi there, guys. good sunday morning to you. it feels like we're sweating coast to coast. we continue to bake in the west. they've had more heat waves, and we're looking at least triple digits for the most spots in the intermountain west. let's take a look -- at those heat alerts. we're looking at temperatures up to one of six, 1:07 in some spots. where you see that hot pink, that's your heat warning. you want to wear light, loose layers. here's the problem, it's been so long, and also they're not getting that relief at night. so we're going to see temperatures overnight in the seventies as well. where it's orange, that's your heat advisory. we also have a very high fire danger warning. we have dry thunderstorms, which is so interesting. and northern central california, area of high pressure is bringing moisture. that water is evaporating. so they're getting lightning strikes on top of this really dehydrated strain and. that is why we're getting the wildfires. that's gonna be a big threat today into monday, once again. so we're gonna continue to watch that, very, very closely. of course, lots of smoke. the smoke forecast. hazy skies, reduce filibustered zippy. lower air quality. as we head throughout at least the next three days. this is the setup, we have that jet stream that is really high in the west. then it dips in the east. there is that area of high pressure. it's like a heat pump, pumping in the hot air. just staying locked in place, day after day. it will continue to do so over the next week or so. we're going to see really high temperatures in the northern plains. the intermountain west. once again, it's gonna spread to the east as we head over the next several days. some of these temperatures today. 100 degrees in salt lake city. 105 in billing's. so, we've seen triple digits so many days in these spots. that's 17 degrees above what is typical for this time of year. as we head towards tomorrow, look at all those colors. the reds, the oranges, indicating really hot, dry air in place. miles city, 1:02. 12 degrees above normal for this time of the year. and yes this is what it looks like. not a lot of relief for the week. hopefully looks to be as we look towards the later part of july, it looks to be a little relief. at least in the east. so some spots to have some relief in the future. but not this week in the intermountain west. back to you guys. >> something small to look forward in a little bit. michellerubble this morning as the death toll of the catastrophic flooding in germany and belgium climbs beyond 130. 180, for other. recovery efforts now underway after days of torrential rain collapsing houses, toppling cars and turning streets to waterways. here, you can see rescue teams working relentlessly in a town in western germany. >> and this astonishing footage from the height of the flooding. take a look here. this is when water literally carried away an entire house in a place about six hours away from >> joining us now is nbc news correspondent claudio on the ground. claudia, what is the recovery process look like right now? >> hi, erin. while the search for the hundreds of people still reported limiting continues here. only an hour ago right here behind me this is a railroad. or at least it used to be. the police were combing through the rubble. with wooden sticks, literally looking for bodies. they were also looking into the many wrecked cars. you can see that have been washed a

michelle goldberg. michelle, i'm going to start with you. the republican party as a whole continues to defend people who try to overthrow the government, who tried to hang mike pence and who tried to basically discount the votes of millions upon millions of americans. i'm going to play this audio and get your thoughts on the other side. >> the only reason these people are being pursued this way is because of their political beliefs. >> people are being treated unbelievably unfairly when you look at people in prison. >> the doj is harassing -- harassing -- peaceful patriots across the country. >> political persecution by the department of justice and the fbi. >> so, here's the thing that gets me. obviously a lot of republicans were in favor of overthrowing the government. they don't consider democrats to be legitimate parts of the political process. that doesn't surprise me. but what part of the electorate do you think they're trying to talk to? i know some trump supporters. most trump supporters are not in favor of overthrowing the government. who are these republicans talking to when they praise these people? >> i think in donald trump's case, probably in paul gosar's case, they are expressing their legitimate admiration for these people. in fox news i think they're talking to their base. it is true, i suppose, that most trump supporters aren't in favor of the violent overthrow of the government. but most republicans do believe that biden's election was illegitimate. and i think you've seen this strange rewriting of history even just over six months where initially when the attack was so raw, it was so new and kind of raw and shocking, almost everybody tried to distance themselves from it. and yet over the last six months, they've developed this revisionist history and sort of martyrology around some of the people who died that day. so, they've gone from saying this was horrible, then antifa did it. then, this was unfortunate to this was justified. >> and that's the thing. i'm glad that you took us through that entire arc because not only were most republicans trying to distance themselves from this. they actually complained about it initially. during the impeachment hearing, they said donald trump, you were responsible for this. they tried to call the president to discourage him from this behavior. but now all of a sudden these folks are tourist who is got lost and couldn't find their brochures. this is the other part of this that's very strange to me. i remember all through last year republicans screaming and yelling the democrats want to defund the police. the democrats want to abolish the police. but right now on the capitol, you have republicans holding up funding for the capitol police. are democrats going to be smart and say that republicans are trying to defund the police now? are they going to be smart enough to use that? or is this more of the hypocrisy of the republican party that will go by the wayside? >> every democrat on capitol hill ought to be calling a news conference to talk about that, to talk about how the party of law and order, the party of keeping the thin blue line and all of that is -- will not adequately fund the capitol police. it's outrageous. first question to michelle. a lot of these republicans are talking to donald trump, talking to him, staying in his good graces. but it is, you know, look, we could talk endlessly about the dev lugs of the republican party into nothing but a cultive personality, a dangerous cultive personality at that. but this is a party that used to have law and order as its rallying cry. and the irony is it's beyond irony. >> irony left the building screaming. last time republicans cared about law and order, briscoe and waterson were still prosecuting cases on nbc. they haven't cared about that in a long time. i do think, michelle, i want to go back to this idea of this sort of defense and where this defense leads. so, every single national security analyst has been saying since january that was a test run, right? you've got 400 people have been arrested. not that many people have been jailed. it is a test run. what we saw at state capitols last summer over mask mandates is indicative of where these people could go. my questi

michelle gerard. michelle, you're one of my favorite economists so i'm not talking about you. okay? >> i was just going to say am i one of those people, charles that you're suggesting that i, i'm very humble when it comes to predicting these numbers, because we all know it's a little bit of throwing a dart at the board but you make a really good point which is the fact that the numbers have continued to surprise and bond yields are particular back towards their lowest level since february. it's telling you that there are growing concerns about the strength of the economy being sustained over the second half of the year, and i do think that that's something that is going to kind of continue to nag at this market and it really comes back to the uncertainty around the impact ultimately of the delta variant, and whether or not we end up having to move toward renewed restrictions, schools not being able to perhaps open, what that might mean, so, there are a lot of i think concerns out there in the market that you are certainly seeing it being reflected even though the data themselves may still look relatively healthy. charles: and to that point, we just heard chairman powell on wednesday and from what i read, and from i saw again, i heard something completely different, but how come so much of the consensus now sees tapering happening sooner, sees the first rate hike happening sooner, when the data is suggesting heck, we could slow down the second half of this year and next year, gdp was not where it was and then of course we heard chairman powell not only talking about the delta variant, michellens that haven't even come up yet, being a possibility. >> right. yeah, i had the same sort of opinion, i think, as you did charles in the sense that i didn't come away feeling that the federal reserve was setting us up to expect certainly when it comes to interest rates that the fed be taking action to slow things down anytime soon. now you're right when it comes to the tapering or the amount of purchases that the fed is conducting to stimulate the economy, i think that there is, you see the fed setting the table for that, and some of that is really just about the fed not wanting to overshoot , and not wanting to boost asset prices like equities too far to fast to disconnect from fundamentals. charles: yeah, as if they would ever admit it. i've got less than a minute to go. i'm not sure if you heard my conversation with senator braun but we're talking probably an infrastructure package and what's interesting a couple days ago, morgan stanley had a headline that says why u.s. infrastruc

michelle meyer in the opening. -- michelle meyer in her opening act this morning, you've got a 24 month wing american economy, at least two times normal. jonathan: the issue is do you look at the numbers come of the levels, or the deceleration from .1 to -- from 0.1 to 0.2. tom: the negative the real yield is creeping up. i'm looking at a bond market. why are yields so low in the 10 year auction was a disaster, given the boom that we have seen from jbm and gs? lisa: it actually came in fairly strong, and there was plenty of demand. perhaps a disaster when it comes to what it says about the state of the economy as people are concerned about that. i think it comes down to the same story. there's so much cash and people are not deploying. deposits are increasing 23% at jp morgan. the idea that bloomberg intelligence points out that large firms still have two point $4 trillion of cash on their balance sheets that needs to be deployed. this explains the strength in mergers and acquisitions. the question is when it will support the rest of the economy. tom: it is going to be interesting to se

michelle meyer, head of u.s. economics. michelle, it's great to have you here and i think that, you know, just as we're getting to a breakout point in the labor market and the economy, do you think there's any signs yet of this delta variant slowing things down, or do you think the economy is going to move past it and move through it and not be phased this time around? >> yeah. hey, kelly so, you know, i think so far the answer is no, not really i mean, certainly not in the data flow. what we're seeing is pretty extraordinary pace of activity in all things services activity. so, you know, travel, restaurants, entertainment consumers are out engaging they're spending and those businesses are trying to ramp up to accommodate such strong demand. and that's what we're seeing in the data car data showing the spending and the labor market showing businesses trying to expand. and there's still more room to go as you know, the risk is, of course, there could be some pullback if the delta variant creates a turn higher in virus cases, which ultimately leads to hospitalizations, which gets consumers to change their behavior so, that is an outstanding risk. but at the moment it's not showing up in the data flow. so, let's talk about the strength in the economy, the strength in the market and the fact that bond yields are dropping a lot of people say it's because the labor market is showing hospitality. the hardest hit sectors are catching up to everybody else. they're saying that means the fed is going to taper and that tightening is flattening the yield curve. do you think that makes sense? >> i think we have to consider the two levers that the fed pulls quite differently. yes, i think the fed is setting up to taper. they're making progress on the labor market the inflation data looks clearly a lot stronger and they've been laying the groundwork for tapering. so, our sense is they will go ahead and announce the plan in september. shortly after that, they'll go ahead and taper. but even if they taper, even if they scale back on asset purchases, they're still going to be actively engaged in the markets in terms of expanding their balance sheet, likely until the fall of next year. in an economy that will have closed the output gap and already start overheating. so, it's still a very accommodative federal reserve, even with the steps towards tapering and the other lever, interest rate hikes that i think they're still far from pulling our sense is that we're looking at 2023, second half of 2023 before the fed feels comfortable starting to hike interest rates. that's where i think the bond market is a little bit unsettled. they can kind of price in the taper, but the hiking, you know, seems to be the sense of pull forward rate hikes i don't think the fed is giving any indication that's the sense. >> i've been surprised at some of the hawkish rhetoric we've heard from fed officials since the last meeting if they were concerned the market saw the dots and reacted too hawkishly, they've had the chance to walk that back why do you think this is is this very drop in bond yields what the fed wants >> look, we have a divided committee. the federal reserve is not all united in terms of this new framework and how to implement that new framework and you have a number of hawks that have been vocal several officials were looking for hikes to start in 2022 and they've been on the tapes talking about the rationale for that but you have a large part of the committee, particularly the core of the committee, that we believe is still highly committed to the new framework and making sure they generate an average of 2% inflation, broad based labor market recovery, all the things they've been talking about, which by the way they're establishing and they will want to continue to accomplish that and they don't want to short circuit the recovery by talking hawkishly or looking towards higher interest rates. i think part of the challenge is there is a divided committee and that makes it difficult for communication. in terms of what the fed wants, to your point kelly, about the interest rates, i don't think the fed wants the market to be pulling forward rate hikes i don't think the fed wants the markets to be doubting their commitment to higher inflation and that will be something they'll have to reset and hope that the data allows them to adjust market expectations on that front >> so interesting. all right. we will continue the chat now. michelle, thank you very, very much for setting that up for us. mic michelle meyer with bank of america. >>> the nasdaq and s&p 500 are hitting record highs again so, let's talk about the drop in bond yields, the flatter yield curve and whether this is what the fed wants. joining me the president of securities and national securities welcome to both of you i'll begin with you because i think michelle just spoke of a divided fed. i think if you were on the fed you would on the side of the hawks. so, you know, what changed streaks? for years we were talking to you about interest rates potentially plunging and ten-year almost going to zero. now your concern is on the flip side of things, right? >> kelly, for so many years i was looking at the bond yields going down because i didn't see inflation pick up, despite the trump tax cuts and i didn't expect growth to pick up to a significant extent. and that was going against the consensus. that's how it worked out with the 10-year yield going below 2%

michelle grossman has the latest forecast. michelle, good to see you? >> good to see you, joe, you know, just thinking about this painstaking mission in the most perfect weather is unimaginable. you throw in the heat, humidity, the tropical conditions, and then the potential for strong winds, heavy downpours, even isolated tornadoes is unthinkable. let's give you the latest and the timing of what we can expect of where we will see impacts in florida. this is the latest as of the 2:00 advisory. it just came in from the national hurricane center. winds are ott 60 miles an hour. we are not expecting it to become a hurricane again. winds moving northwest at 14 miles per hour. moving at an average speed. it is now 40 miles south-southeast of cuba. here's the mission as we go over cuba tonight. it is mountainous. we could see this storm weaken. that's going to be the tell tale story of this storm as it leaves cuba and emerges back into the gulf tomorrow morning. sunrise through wednesday morning, we could see winds in south florida. it will be affecting florida through wednesday night and into the carolinas on thursday. we have a tropical storm warning for key west. a tropical storm watch for parts of the west coast of florida. so for today, heavy rain in cuba. we will see the potential for mudslides. increasing winds in florida. that really picks up on monday as that storm emerges back into the gulf. for surfside, we will certainly be watching this very, very closely, joe. we are looking at the potential for winds gusting at 30 miles per hour. also think of this hurricane. it is big. it has bands. it is going to stretch. even though the center of the low is to the west we could see heavy downpours and could see isolated turns thinking of everyone involved in the mission here. >> michelle, thanks so much. >>> joining us now is allyn kilsheimer, founder of kce structural engineers. he hare hoard by the town of surfside to investigate -- he has been hired by the town of surfside to investigate the collapse. i want to know more on your thoughts on this planned demolition. what exactly is involved in this process. >> the gentleman who has been hired is one of the best. they place explosive charges at various elements in the building. they are timed so you can control which charge goes off, by doing that you can kinds of control how it is going to come down. the difference here is usually that's done with a building that's still standsing and you just want to take it down. this building has been compromised. the parts that are still remaining have been compromised. so it may or may not behave the way a normal building would behave as far as coming down as planned. >> we heard the mayor mention that term that many of us probably haven't heard before, energetic felling. how s
