michelle. michelle, stand by for us because we want to go to the connecticut governor, ned lamont, who is speaking now briefing the folks in his state. >> exacted on our state and our region. this is particularly severe because it is going to be 8-plus inches of rainfall on top of tons of rainfall that we've had over the last week. that means our ground is saturated. that means our ground sitting on top of non- porous luring is like a flood. there's no more absorbing and that leads to flood in. combine it with the fact we will have an astronomical tide. i mean astronomical in the sense we have a very full moon, the highest tides you can have. that combined with the wind gives a risk along the coastline and interior flooding with the saturation of the soil. the saturation of the soil combined with the fact we could have 70, 80-mile-per-hour winds, that makes the trees a lot less secure. they go over, power goes out, and eversource and ui have warned us there could be hundreds of thousands of outages over the next, you know, few days and beyond. that said, i'm standing here with some folks at the emergency operation center, and i want you to know that i don't think connecticut has ever been as well prepared for a storm as we are for hurricane henri. we work very closely, as you can imagine, with our utilities in particular, eversource, united illuminating, and they're assuring us they will have twice as many people on the ground pre-position as we had a year ago. that makes a big difference. we will be able to respond faster and respond in a way that does everything we can to keep you safe. the other thing we've work on very closely with the utilities as well as the telecom companies -- and if you go back here at the emergency operations center, the big round table with the boards in front, we've had all of the commissioners, and that's d.o.t., transportation, d.e.e.p., we have the guard, we have 200 guard that have been activated, doing everything we can to make sure the lines of communication are clear. i do not want any confusion in terms of what is going on out there. you will be able to call any time you want 211, our emergency line, or even better go to the 211.org and you will get the current information of what is happening. they are plugged into each of the regional operation centers so they will be able to tell you by region what exactly is being remedied and how fast it can be remedied. along the way we just met with all of the mayors and others, remotely, of course, and made sure that they activate their emergency operation center town by town. each of those operation centers is going to have a representative of the utilities assigned to that so they get immediate response in terms of trees down. i can't promise you the trees will be back up and your power is back up within 48 hours, but i can tell you we will be able to do the best we can to get you a response in order to keep you safe. look, i think we found out from hard way electricity is not nice to have, but electricity is an absolutely essential service. we know what it means in terms of medicine. we know what it means in terms of food. we know what it means in terms of the fact next week we could have 90-degree weather. we are tracking very closely those most at risk including, for example, our nursing homes, making sure if they're right in the eye of the storm, if they have to evacuate we know where they can be evacuated to. making sure we have the stand-by power so we can keep the cooling centers available and we can keep people safe. i just urge you on a personal note, as i have said before, two things. stay safe, stay home. get yourself a little extra gasoline, make sure you have your phones all charged. make sure you have three, four, five days worth of food stored. make sure you have the phone number of some people that maybe are living alone and need a little extra assurance. so you can reach out to them and care for them and make sure they're taken care of. but i can tell you here on behalf of, you know, season and myself and all of the folks at the emergency operation center, we're prepared for what could be a tough storm. we are going to hold the utilities accountable, but right now we have the folks on the ground ready to hit the ground running and do everything we can to keep you safe. with that, any of us here -- >> all right, everybody. we were taking a listen to the connecticut governor, ned lamont, of course, briefing the folks in his state about hurricane henri which is barrelling toward his state, likely to make landfall tomorrow morning or so. want to bring back michelle grossman back as i had to cut her off for the governor there. you have heard the governor speaking about power outages which you have been talking about all day, talking about the massive amount of rain we could feasibly get and the storm surge looking at the long island sound. talk me through the impact they could feasibly see when it comes over water, making landfall and then you have the long island sound and then connecticut, is there a potential the storm could feasibly weaken by the time it makes landfall in connecticut given it has a bit of land to make its way over? >> it is such a good question. you gave so many great tips and takeaways, too. it could feasibly. it is expected to decrease a tad, but you know what? it is so close, it is going to make land fall in long island as a category 1 and decrease to a tropical storm when it hits connecticut or rhode island. but you know what? the numbers don't really matter. the impact is going to be the same. >> got it. >> we are still

michelle grossman. michelle, when do we expect hurricane ida to actually make landfall? >> so, we expect it in the next two to three hours. and, jonathan, we spoke on friday and that was a category 1 storm. now up to a category 4 storm. and let's take a look at satellite. i'll kind of walk you through the storm and what we expect from ida. we're talking about catastrophes, life-threatening storm surge, so many impacts with the storm. that's weather 7 if you can bring it up for me. it's going to be on weather 7 and you're looking at a satellite picture. okay, we're going to get that for you. jonathan, it's a category 4 storm. we're looking at winds of 150 miles per hour right now. it's a strong one. we're expecting winds of 155 miles per hour as it makes landfall, so right now here it is. look at this. you don't have to be a meteorologist to see that this is a really destructive storm. it's a strong one. it has that textbook core, that center where you see the red. those are the thunderstorms swirling around it. so they're really high cloud tops. that's what's going to bring this strong severe weather on shore. we're also looking at storm surge, looking at winds and rainfall. let me tell you what is happening right now. we're looking at rain falling and heavy rain falling. we were with al roker for a while. it looked like the picture changed minute by minute. it was calm a few hours ago, then he was standing in rising water. that's what we're starting to see. this is satellite radar where you see those outer bands there. you see those really dark colors. that's really heavy rainfall. this is dangerous because on the northeast quadrant, that would be on the right part of your screen where you see like the panhandle of florida, pensacola, you are you're seeing severe weather warnings. when you have a hurricane moving towards land, that friction is going to cause those winds to turn. that's where we're getting the potential for severe weather. also starting to he sue the winds pickup, that storm surge. we'll track that for you. look at the winds, up to 49 mile per hours in some spots. when it gets closer the next two hours, it's going to be tornado like. you want to take shelter as if you're in a tornado. the pensacola, panhandle is in a tornado warning. in other places we're going to have winds 150 miles per hour, greater in some spots. that's why you want be to take shelter. of course you want to pay attention to flooding waters. you don't want to be in that. you want to be in the lowest level in your house and stay away from windows just as if you're in a tornado. let's give you the latest. 150 mile per hour winds. this is the worst case scenario out there. this is what we are expecting. we had that huge increase in wind speed. it was 80 miles per hour yesterday, at 8:00. today 150. what is that, 65 mile per hour increase. 35 mile per hour increase. that means ranch i had intensification. we almost doubled that. if it makes landfall at this wind speed, it's going to tie the record for the strongest hurricane to make landfall. if it bumps up to 155 as we're expecting, then it's going to be the strongest hurricane ever to hit louisiana. we're going to watch this, of course. it's moving at 14 miles per hour, moving pretty quickly. it's going to make landfall quicker than we thought. in the next couple of hours we're going to be tracking that for you. then it slows down. look what happens as we widen this view out. see those white lines? those are 12-hour increments. see how slow that's moving? we have the storm surge. you have the winds and the rainfall. then we're going to talk about this for days to come, at least until friday this will be a big story. it's going to go through the tennessee valley, bring the potential for severe weather. it's going to bring the potential for flooding rains. just remember a week ago yesterday, they had 17 inches of rain in tennessee in just three hours, so they do not need more rain. also into the mid-atlantic, we've had the most rain in july, also in august. we're going to add to those tote -- totals making it a scary range. storm surge is a big one. jonathan, you know we talked about this on friday. a storm surge is a wall of water. the winds push this wall of water on land. it's that saltwater kind of going over dry land. you can't outrun it. it happens quick and it's powerful. that's why all that money was spent on these levees and the flood walls and the gates to hold this water back. now, they can hold up to 20 feet. so we do think they're going to do their job. it's going to be a big test as we go through the next couple of hours of 10 to 16 feet as we go throughout the next few hours. and again, i can't emphasize enough that it's life-threatening. it's unsurvivable and it happens really, really quick. we're going to add rain on top of that. you can see how far that stretches into the mid-atlantic. you see those darker colors. so scary amounts up to 20 inches of rain. generally we're going to see 8 to 16. that's really hard especially in new orleans. if you remember new orleans is a bowl effect. that water is going to go in like a bathtub with a drain on. you can't get it out unless you pump it out. 92 of the 94 pumps are working. that's the second test to get that water out. but it looks like the heaviest rain is going to fall in those areas where you see the reds, the orange, the yellow. that's extending through the appalachians through the mid-atlantic. this is a look outside. we're looking at the clouds already coming through. we're starting to see the impacts already. we were watching al in the last hour. again, those winds and rains coming up. destructive winds, we're going to look at significant damage. there were some key statements sent out by the national weather service in new orleans. they said it could be inhabitable for a week. there could be roads washed out, trees down, power lines, without power for weeks and it's going to be hot. so we're going to continue to follow that story as well. extensive power outages where you see the red here, so homa looks like is going to get hit the worst. baton rouge. mississippi is not out of the woods and that will extend to tennessee as well. jonathan, i know we were talking on friday, it was category 1 storm, the calm before the storm, now we're here and we have two hours before we see that landfall. >> michelleuickly, when will it become a category 5? is it the wind speed? does it have to hit a certain wind speed to become a category 5? >> yeah, a great question. it's the wind speed. the threshold is 157 miles per hour for it to make that category 5 status. >> got it. >> looks like according to the national hurricane center that we're going to make landfall at 155 miles. it's definitely not out of the possibility of a category 5 storm. the bottom line is that's 2 miles per hour and it's a strong one. >> all right, michelle grossman, thank you very much. >>> now joining me from baton rouge is nbc correspondent sam brock. sam, thanks for being here. how is the weather there in baton rouge? >> reporter: you know, it's just starting to pickup in terms of the rain. we've seen that for about the last 30 minutes or so, jonathan. good morning. good to be with you. i think we're going to see a preview of what al had in the distance from now and lake pontchartrain we saw the waves picking up. to furth

michelle is here. quite a big move. michelle: it is a hopeful sign. i will not celebrate too much. we have seen travel reopening plans from singapore and elsewhere too. but we got a sign this week when the travel minister told bloomberg they were looking at different arrangements reopening pilot programs from september, when singapore is expected to be above that 80% full vaccination target. so this announcement yesterday was a concrete sign that something is moving forward, with specific countries added to that list for quarantine-free travel, not controlled itineraries. not just business travel, but maybe some of these other pilot programs. there has been a lot of angst in the business and other communities on just getting home. in hong kong, it has been on-again and off-again. i missed the opportunity to see you guys. that is now off, given that hong kong and singapore are divergent in their approach. but at least hong kong and macau are now added to a restrictions list. so we got some clarity on these different categories of lesser quarantine. some 7 --day quarantine's for certain countries. . 14-day stay at home quarantines for other countries. a bulk of those visiting singapore will still under -- will still be under a 14 day quarantine. yvonne: it is not just the travel side of things, it is also work from home you guys have more of a flexible option at this point drew: -- at this point? michelle right, they have moved to a 50% work from home capacity at the offices. some offices will be taking advantage of that. others are still working out arrangements in terms of flexibility and how they can monitor to stay under that cap. but again, moving in the right direction on that front. we will see how that helps the economy. it is important to bear in mind that the government sees a 6% to 7% growth rate this year, i rebound predicated on these reopening measures, instituting them and keeping them without interruption. yvonne: michelle jamrisko our reporter on the latest on the singapore reopening. we are looking at the hsi. it is looking pretty bad. we are hitting some pretty bad milestones. david: yeah. [laughter] technically. 31,000 was our peak. that is a 20% drop, if we close at these levels. that brings us into this next hong kong story. at least one hollywood star is in town to greet, if we close with a bear market, bear market conditions. [laughter] i wonder who that is. yvo

michelle grossman is tracking this potentially powerful storm. michelle, what should we expect heading into the weekend? >> hi there. we are looking at the potential for a category four storm at landfall. that is what we are expecting and it looks to be on track. we have about 30 hours before we see that landfall. as of the 11:00 advisory, winds are 80 miles per hour. it just emerged into the gulf of mexico, so it is starting to blossom from here. very wind warm waters, wind shear, those are things that hurricanes like to blossom. by 7:00 tomorrow a category three storm. sunday, 7 am, winds of 140 miles per hour and we do expect a landfall as a category four somewhere along the coast of louisiana, most likely south central or southeastern louisiana. then it is going to make landfall. we will see winds, still, sunday, 120 miles per hour. we could see 20 inches of rain in some spots. and look what happens monday to wednesday. it slows down drastically. and hurricanes are like a sponge, squeezing out the rain. so we will see a lot of rain falling, again 20 inches possible in some spots. here are your warnings. warnings all the way from lake charles to the border with mississippi. where you see that red color, new orleans, baton rouge, morgan city, that's where we see hurricane warnings. so you want to evacuate if you have been told to evacuate. tomorrow's your day to prepare, because sunday is going to be tonight. torrential flooding and rains starting on sunday. let's talk about tuesday into wednesday, awful amounts of rain. it's like a bowl effect, hard to get water out. that's why we have those pumping stations and we are going to put them to the test this weekend. by monday also seeing a sunday and monday, those winds as well. when hurricanes get closer to land, or at least this one, we will see the winds stretch out. these could span 250 miles. wet that will do is bring strong winds onshore, maybe bring some power outages, but also pushing water on land. so we look at storm surge. what is storm surge? it's a wall of water. it's literally the ocean water, that salt water pushing onto dry land. and it is life-threatening, so we could see 10 to 15 inches, in the pink, or in the red, it happens fast and that's why you want to be evacuated and away from the coast. also talking about power outages. that maroon color, morgan city, also new orleans where we could see some widespread power outages sunday and monday. then it gets better as you go inland. the take away, further north, you will see heavy rainfall. 16 to 18 inches but possible 20. and then before i leave, i circled hurricane ida but we are also watching two areas of interest. we are one week away from peak season. and we are starting to heat up, and we are continuing to watch ida but also these other two areas. back to you. >> michellebeyond those being told they need to evacuate, how are beeple being told they need to prepare? >> so you need to listen to your officials. a lot of people who live along the coast, they're used to this. so last year there were four tropical systems that moved on shore in louisiana. today, on this day, we saw a category four hurricane hammer louisiana. on sunday it's the 16th anniversary of katrina, so that's not lost on us. so you want to look at your local warnings, heed those warnings, listen to officials. i know it's a weekend, it's friday, saturday. no one wants to go out of their way. but in this case, we will see life-threatening storm surge, and potential for deadly flash flooding. when you talk about water, that's a hard thing to go up against, especially 10 to 15 foot storm surge. that's unsurvivable. so if you don't evacuate that there is going to be, well, consequences. >> having lived in florida for several years, i am accustomed to watching these storms, i appreciate you b

michelle taylor planner. members of rec park team are present. before i turn this over to michelle taylor, rec park staff will give a brief presentation on the proposed project. >> thanks. good afternoon, commissioners. thank you for reviewing this project. i am the project manager with rec and park for the project. i wish to give a brief introduction on the project. there were some items in the june hearing and the community process again and objectives. next slide. sorry. back. ports mouth square is in chinatown on the parking garage. the current site and project respond to the garage's structure and the natural topography of the site. you can start to see how this works on the slide here which shows the garage entry how it sneaks below the park along kearney street on the bottom of your screen. these constraints divide the park to two terraces. upper on the west side and lower on the east side. one of the biggest changes is removal of existing pedestrian bridge. you can see in the existing slide spanning the street and by secretarying half of the park. small community clubhouse is located under the bridge. next slide. back to the proposed plan. i will give you a kick tour around the project with the main features. in the june hearing there was a desire to understand how it connects to the chinatown, what features provide the connection. i will highlight these elements. in the next section on community outreach i will touch on how the community was co-designer for the project and parks design reflects the desires. the community set goals provided critical input on the design. the styling reflects current culture and value of the chinese community. broadly about the design, the park overall concept was inspired by traditional chinese toolbox. these contain treasures and each space was a specific size and shape to hold a specific treasure. design uses this concept to define spaces in the park. i will zoom in to the spaces. upper terrace then lower terrace. next slide. this is the upper terrace. this is a large multi-use plaza to accommodate small gatherings and large events. it features the rest room buildings that will stay. a stage and light system above. anchored by a large structure on the east edge to provide intimate gathering before. the profile incorporates chinese curved rooflines. east of the structure is a ramp and grand stair connecting the lower level more active zone with the children's playground and fitness area. main playground is influenced by the idea of the gold mountain. title for california given by early chinese immigrants who came during the gold russian were instrumental to build the first transcontinental railroad. as back drop it uses the ideas of the terrace to shots the children's slide which reimagines the early chinese immigrants as agricultural field. next slide. both levels have direct entries to the clubhouse into the terraces. lower is large assembly areas. upper level has smaller meeting rooms and office space. these show how the clubhouse is flexible with space. there are different events or programs that could work inside. one element of the toolbox idea the clubhouse is a lantern for the community reminiscent of the chinese patterns of chinatown. it follows the structure to the mass. elevators exit to the court on northwest corner of the site. the planting design. it is off the main feature of the park and expresses the chinese culture with over size bonsai planters with oriental pines. it is selected for seasonal flowers to coincide with the chinese new years celebration. next slide. i would like to show you how we got to this point in the project. this proposed project is result of very long community outreach process starting in 2013 with a feasibility analysis and stakeholder interviews. we continue planning the project and kicked oven gagement phase with listing exercise in 2016 and continuing to the participatory design process in 2017-2018. next slide, please. listening phase was sitting down for interviews. we interviewed park users and surveys on the ground conversations with users in the park. we did an online survey. through all of this outreach we reached over 500 individuals for initial information about the park. i want to highlight a couple things we asked and what we heard. the questions included where you feel safe and unsafe in the park, use the bridge, how do you approach the park? we asked people to share specific areas of site with positive or negative associations. left heat map with positive feedback areas. we continue to hear the bridge wasn't used and the clubhouse could be bigger. these stood out over and over in the feedback we received. next slide. our next in the community outreach use data from listening to develop the design. developed over the course of five large workshops. we began with design framework that went to alternatives and final proposed plan. through the development we continued to ask key questions to ensure the initial feedback continued to be true and each time and each question the two highest priorities larger clubhouse and moving the bridge are the top priorities. the project team took all of the feedback and developed the project objectives in the draft e.i.r. with that introduction i will pass it to michelletaylor from the planning department. thank you so much. >> thank you. good afternoon, commissioner. michelle taylor, planning department staff. today i am going to provide you an overview of the e.i.r. starting with the project spike. the project site is located 733 turn street ports mouth square and the pedestrian bridge to connect the two properties. it is at the border of chinatown neighborhood. ports mouth square is a full city block 57,000 square foot bi-level park with under and over ground parking street. kearney street is southeast corner. this is home to chinese culture center which occupies third floor of the hotel directly across the road from the ports mouth square. the kearney street bridge is stylish extension of the hotel and separates the concrete forms and details. this is the status of the site. it is a resource for the purpose of ceqa. it was established in 1835 as part of the early settlement of san francisco. in the early days the public functioned as unofficial an

michelle grossman who is, of course, tracking this storm. michelle, good day to you. very busy day. very concerning day. tell me how much more this storm could strengthen before making landfall. yesterday category 1 and we were speaking with you about that and then moves to category 4 in 24 hours. >> i know. hi, alex. i know, it exploded overnight. we saw it go from 80 miles per hour up to 150. we are really seeing it strengthen. it's in that perfect environment and swimming over waters of 90 degrees. some of the warmest waters on the planet. you don't need to be a meteorologist and look at this image and know it is a very dangerous storm and could pea catastrophic. look at that red coloring. the high clouds. the strong thunderstorms of ida also the well defined eye. this is a really crucial time in the next five to six hours before it makes landfall and now sort of a wait and see. as we look at satellite and radar. we're looking at radar and the darker colors are the heavier bands of rain and already starting to see the outer bands of rain. we saw al roker earlier looking at lightning over to the west and looking at rain even as far over as pensacola. we're seeing the winds picking up and the seas getting rough and some water rises especially right outside of new orleans. so right now this is the latest. 150-mile-per-hour winds and we have hurricane hunters in there and constantly sampling data and we're getting the updates for you. moving northwest at 15 miles per hour. we're expecting that landfall in the next five to six hours. there it is. that was just updated. they're expecting winds of 155 miles per hour. and our top notch meteorologist bill karins sent out a note to our group and said ida is making a run for one of the strongest storms to hit louisiana. it's in the perfect environment for the strengthening. it doesn't have a lot of time, but enough time to see 155-mile-per-hour winds. look what happens. the story doesn't end there. the winds, storm surge and also the rainfall, torrential rainfall. but then it slows down. and then it's really going to become a story of tornadoes, strong thunderstorms, heavy, heavy rainfall. we stop this right around tennessee and remember just a week ago we saw 17 inches in tennessee in one spot and we're going to add to those totals. and then by thursday we're still seeing the impact in the mid atlantic. those grounds are so saturated also. we could have enough oomph to this storm to see thunderstorms and a tornado risk come wednesday and thursday in the mid-atlantic. so, let's talk about the first impact. this is where the levee protection system is going to be tested. all those walls. all the money put in for the protection. and we do believe that these storm surges although high, 16 feet, are still going to be low enough to be protected. so, where you see that hot pink, that's 12 to 16 feet. that includes grand isle, that's a very small, fragile, narrow island. we're really concerned for that spot. then the eye is going to move over morgan city. we're going to see wind impacts there. let's talk about storm surge i want to back up a bit. when the winds push the ocean water, the salt water on to dry land. it happens fast and it's strong and it's unsurvivable. so, we heard of a lot of people evacuating. that's good news. we hope everyone did because it comes fast and it's hard to go up against storm surge. then you add rainfall. scary totals. up to 20 inches of rain. all these grounds are so saturated. we had a very rainy july. we had a very rainy august. and now we're adding 20 inches in some spots. and we could see torrential downpours. now new orleans is a bull effect. we heard about this with katrina. the rain gets in and can't get out. the pumping systems, 92 are working. alex, we're talking about destructive winds and also downed trees that could lead to power outages. there is also verbiage out of the national weather service where they're using words like unlivable for weeks and you're on your own. hopefully you heeded the warnings but really key messaging and scary messaging that we have a six, seven, even 24 hours and eventually into thursday with some really rough times ahead. >> michelle, real quickly. 157 miles per hour i believe is the threshold over which ida must go to become a category 5. is there anything that can slow ida down, blunt its force between now and landfall or is it just it's barreling there and that's the way it is going to be? >> it's barreling there. it's in the perfect environment. so, hurricanes like those warm waters and, again, 85 to 90 degrees. that's unbelievable. that's warmer than bath water and it's deep. it's not going to get the upwelling and the wind shear usually cuts off the tops of hurricanes and slows them down so it doesn't have that and, yeah, it has that perfect environment to keep strengthening. now the good news is it doesn't have that much time. but we certainly could see a cat 5, that's not out of the question. but at this point a cat 4 or cat 5 so strong already and we'll see the impacts whether as a cat 4 or cat 5. >> thank you so much. we're watching this very closely. before we get to our team on the ground, i want to al

michelle meyer and peter quigley. thank you both so much for being here michelle, if you don't mind we're going to start things off with you a lot of data to unpack here unemployment helped slightly, huge gains for hospitality, 380,000 jobs education had big gains as well. we'll get to that in a minute. what does this mean for the markets and maybe for some people even more importantly the potential of tapering coming this year? >> well, i think it's just as steve suggested. it's a lot of relief for the market because they were so much focused on what was going to go wrong in the economy, wrong in the data a lot of the down side risks, and then the jobs report comes, which was, you know, really everything and more and i think longer on the jobs report, the strong overall, number of net positive revisions, low unemployment rate, increase across the board so, i think that market participants saw this as okay there's more fundamental stress in the economy we do need to be cognizant of the risks in the coming weeks because of the delta variant, but at least there was a good downation before we see that transpire in the data flow >> our kate rogers did excellent reporting on the teacher shortage around the country, lite of big gains in education there were 240,000 government jobs added last month, the majority believed to be in education. do you see worker demand remaining strong for teachers? and is there any other areayou see worker demand strong >> we see strength across all of our sectors, frank but education, in particular, you saw an unusually high number of jobs added in july, which is as a result of schools starting tutoring programs or extending tutoring programs, looking to open their schools earlier to try to remedy the pandemic gap year that we had last year we're the largest provider of substitute teachers in the united states, and i will tell you that the number of teacher vacancies that we're seeing are really reaching alarming rates because some of these teachers bowed out during the pandemic. and the influx of new teachers is not sufficient to fill that demand so, not only are we concerned about schools reopening, but we also want to make sure that every classroom has an instructor in it >> you talk about a lot of teachers bowing out. i think a lot of people bowed out the economy a bit because of their concerns over covid. michelle, i'll turn it back over to you we saw wages go up we saw hiring going up with the delta variant in play for the economy, the market, all our public health concerns, how do you see what we're seeing going forward when it comes to hospitality hiring, especially in bars and restaurants where the majority of that was happening. >> a critical factor for continuing to see healthy job growth is labor supply and we know that this has been a big challenge the last several months, that there's extraordinary demand for workers to satisfy the consumer spending and the changes we have seen following the reopening. but, yes, people haven't been coming back as quickly as maybe the economy would really need in order to see, you know, that pace of growth for overall consumer spending and job increase, et cetera. frank, to your question, absolutely we need to see a further rise in the labor force. there should be a path for that, especially we're now seeing stronger wage growth we are seeing the unempl

michelle grossman and nbc meteorologist janessa webb in long beach, new york. michelle, starting with you, the latest tracking we got a couple hours ago, we're looking at -- what are we looking at in terms of possible paths and strength? >> yeah, hi, good to see both of you. and we are looking at a very strong tropical storm right now. we anticipate it's become a category 1 storm later on today and we also anticipate it to make landfall on long island as a category 1 storm. that hasn't happened in 36 years. let's take a look at the warnings. they are quite literally warnings for today. it's the calm before the storm, so to speak, get everything prepared now for a hurricane, treat it like a tornado as well. we're going to see trees coming down with saturated ground. hurricane warnings in the red. montauk, new haven, islip. and all the way down to the jersey shore, point pleasant beach, be prepared as well too. this is the latest, this came out at 5:00. next advisory at 8:00 and then 11:00 and then 2:00 p.m. we'll see changes. right now it is so close to a category 1 storm. very strong with winds at 70 miles per hour. it's moving fairly quickly at 12 miles per hour to the north/northeast as we expected. it made that turn and it's continuing to move through the north in those very warm bath-like waters. that's why we expect it to blossom into a category 1 storm later on today. i stopped this clock also right near long island. so we do anticipate -- the national hurricane center anticipates this landfalling as a category 1 storm. this has not happened since hurricane gloria, i remember, it was on my birthday years ago, 36 years ago. so we could see another one as early as sunday. let's go throughout time here. this is going to be the biggest problem with hurricanes you see heavy rainfall, you see storm surge, you also see very strong winds but with this storm, henri, we are looking at very slow moving systems. so it's almost going to have the brakes put on it. by later on tonight we're going to see the winds picking up. even when we're sleeping then sunday that's when we're going to see the landfall as a category 1 storm. those lines are increments of 12 hours. it's not moving very quickly, it's almost in slow motion. and that's bad news when you have tropical systems because it just allows that rainfall to pour over the same areas and, again, we are so saturated from fred that fell just days ago. so the grounds are saturated, trees are coming down, we're going to see power outages. monday at 2:00 a.m., a tropical storm in connecticut, the capital district of new york seeing heavy rains and then not moving very far until 2:00 p.m. on monday and then it takes that turn to the west by tuesday. it's out of here on tuesday and then we have the cleanup and we may still have power outages on tuesday, wednesday, into thursday. this is a big one too. storm surge. what is storm surge. it's a wall of water. quite literally the winds push this water onto dry land. janessa is going to talk more about this but we could see three to five feet of storm surge from south hampton to new port. that's a big one too. we're watching this closely. but janessa will talk more about that. >> we'll bring you in now, we know events have been cancelled on the baechl, officials are removing life guard stands and garbage cans so they don't essentially become projectiles. >> yeah, lindsay, you know, what's disturbing about this system, in the cone right now, i have eight states that are going to be impacted. and these are states that are highly populated. now new york city under some tropical storm watches, potentially going into a hurricane warning. so as this system is now expected to shift a little bit more west, right now we are seeing actually lovely conditions out here on long beach. people exercising. there was an art show that was expected for today that has been cancelled so a ton of events. and we're in the dog days of summer. this was going to be one of the last weekends, even across martha's vineyard, that people just really want to be out and about on top of that it's the weekend. and people are excited about that. even though we are seeing great conditions i want to say, man, this is going to be a different story when i see you tomorrow morning as this storm system starts to come in. now, michelle was talking about how things will rev up overnight but you do have that circular motion that will allow some bands to really come in. preparation is key. this is new york city from the boston area, populated places that are just not prone to hurricanes. we are talking about 36 years since we've seen a cat 1. i do want to mention, we're going to see some rapid intensification with this system. and i will not throw it out of the park that we might see a cat 2 hurricane as well. so regardless of the category of this storm system these are areas that just aren't ready and usually impacted by hurricanes and potentially a major hurricane. >> yeah, the waters are really warm where the storm is right now. so the potential for strengthening is forecast. janessa webb, and michelle grossman, thanks to both of you. >>> to the escalating crisis in afghanistan, thousands are crowding the gates outside the kabul airport desperately trying to flee the country. u.s. rescue flights are taking off again
