democrats are pinning hopes on michelle nunn.he way i'm doing this i'm focusing on people that i think a lot of the viewers will be watching and caring about. people care about michelle nunn. they want to knock off mcconnell. a lot of people do. i think kay hagan in north carolina looks to me like a very attractive incumbent who should get reelected if there wasn't the weird swing to the right that might be looming out there. >> i think all of that is true. the republicans have to basically -- the electoral map running in their favor they have to pick up six seats. as you point out there are some vulnerable republicans, as well. if you have the elections today given the bad fall that the administration had, the president's approval ratings, the national tide against obamacare right now, republicans would have a decent chance of picking up the senate. we have a long way to play. >> what can change? >> he has a lot of control or some degree of control over that key element making sure the affordable care act looks not like a disast

democrats believe that could help michelle nunn in the general.laska where failed 2010 candidate joe miller is back. in a state where the gop believes it has a golden opportunity to knock off democrat mark begich. ken buck, he ran and lost in 2010, and he would carry that baggage into a race against mark udall if he can get out of the primary. north carolina, greg brannan has been a thorn in the side of the republican front-runner tom tillis. louisiana, bill cassidy has been pushed to the right by tea party favorite, rob manus. and as we said before, there are plenty of times where incumbents are facing the tea party challengers. it includes pat roberts of kansas, lamar alexander in tennessee, lindsey graham in south carolina, and john cornyn in texas. but the senators and their allies don't intend to take the challenges lightly, and as evidenced by this super-pac ad that blasts steve stockman. >> lies. shady deals. ethical failings. it's everything that's wrong with washington, and it's congressman steve stockman's troubling record. >> joining me

for example, that the ultimate nominee for the gop could be a really flawed candidate and that michelle nunnher way in there. they also think there are other races, mississippi for example, that have long-time incumbent thad cochran loses his party to a tea party candidate they would have a shot there if they could get a decent looking democrat in the race. so it's striking, peter, how much talking to dems these days on the hill they are consumed with gop primaries. >> and they pounce, they absolutely pounce when any republican says something vaguely out of the mainstream or seriously out of the mainstream. last week the republican national committee adopted a resolution urging their candidates to talk about abortion, for example, and terms friendly to them using poll numbers where the public sort of supports some abortion restrictions. and then the republican national committee was very happy about this. the next day they have mike huckabee come speak to the rnc and he talks about women's libidos. there's like a giant women republican face palm. >> this is why you all say you have the repub

watch for a michelle nunn and other candidates to win on this issue because it's a southern strategy democrats. >> celinda, when you work with democratic candidates, involved in campaigns, how to you tell candidates you work with to talk about this issue? >> there are three ways to talk about it. it's strong to talk about it in comparison to the wealthiest 1% in ceo salaries. very important to talk about it as a kitchen table issue. americans aren't good at math. it's powerful to tell people how much the minimum wage is. when you tell people they can work full time and only take home $290 a week, people are appalled. when you have two people working minimum wage jobs, you can't raise a family as the president said. when you tell people you can make more on welfare than the minimum wage, they think that's an outrage. they want to raise the wages. cost of living is going up. food, fuel. look at everything this winter. wages are stagnant and have been for years. this is a great issue for democrats. >> celinda lake. thank you for helping us understand the palpable democratic glee right n

what's interesting about someone like michelle nun is she does come from one of those very famous political families. her father, sam nunnking no secret about the fact that she's from this family. but at the same time, she is really stressing her own career, that she's sort of built up. and that she has never served in political office before. she ran this nonprofit organization that became one of the largest volunteer service organizations, in part because she partnered with george a.w. bush and his family. so she's trying to bring that sort of bipartisan credibility in there. so i think, you know, as you mentioned earlier, it's so interesting to see how women are coming up in so many different sectors, not just in public service and in government, but in private industry. and more of those candidates, i suspect, are going to be coming over into public life, as they rise in tech and these different areas, and they're going to draw on that background and expertise to show that they can really lead. >> we have an actual woman of 2014 sitting at table. so when we come back, i'm going to talk with nina turner about running
