nbc bay area's michelle roberts is live at the courthouse in santa cruz. you spoke with a childhood friend of the suspect today. >> reporter: yeah i did. she said that he did struggle with depression but says she never thought he had the ability to be violent. the hearing today was very brief. gonzalez did not enter a plea. that was postponed until september. so his lawyer has a chance to review the case. 15-year-old adrian gonzalez stood in the santa cruz courtroom in handcuffs. he is charged with murder, sexual assault and kidnapping. his defense attorney requested the arraignment be delayed. >> i've not received any police report yet. >> reporter: he wouldn't say if he plans to request the trial be moved to another county. gonzalez is accused of sexually assaulting and killing his 8-year-old neighbor maddy middletons. investigators believe he lured her into his family's apartment on sunday sexually assaulted and then killed her before leaving her body in a trash bin. >> we're confident the jurors of the county will be able to try this case. >> reporter:

michelle roberts joins us with the latest update. what do we know? >> reporter: the community is really coming together today especially in this area in particular. there are several volunteers out here tonight taking it upon themselves to search this area. the reason they're focused on this particular spot is because police say that's where her trace was picked up by k-9 dogs. that trace unfortunately was lost at the beach but many people are just hoping for the best. >> she was wearing a purple dress. >> reporter: laura jordan is desperate for answers. her 8-year-old daughter maddy is missing. and today she's praying that she is safe. >> i already fell apart. i'm just in survival mode.

but we start with michelle roberts in santa cruz with some difficult questions about how police handled the search. >> reporter: questions tonight and also horrific details. police do believe this 15-year-old suspect was acting alone. they believe within the hour he was able to lure maddy into his apartment complex, kill her and then move her body into the first floor garage of this apartment complex. neighbors tonight are in disbelief and wishing the family strength. . >> it touches real close to home. >> reporter: a community is mourning after the body
