doing that in michigan. congressman didn't have his facts straight. he voted for the job-killing michigan tax. you look at it in terms of job creation, the top priority is private trades. job everything from creation to agricultural. there are many ways to create a jobs path, and we're doing it in our state. one thing i want to ramp up is helping people become career connected. we are helping the structurally unemployed with real ventures. we are taking people that never had an opportunity and giving them an opportunity. we are putting them to work. we are finding nearly a 70% retention rate after a year. now we are putting programs on top to give them upward mobility. to give them skill trade. with the bridge coming, with m-1, with all the entertainment district, there are a lot of jobs. that's my number one priority in my next term is to bring back skill trade, tech and engineering. >> one of the places that most needs skilled, trained workers is the auto industry. i was there in congress when it counted.

we are tennessee, michigan, texas and ohio. and nothing has been happening to help gay and lesbian people for decades. and on the coasts, things have worked and that's wonderful. >> cincinnati charter was repealed. >> that's one urban area. i can tell you in my state, nothing is happening to help gay people. in terms of the science, you talked about that. the science is not nasent. this is a consensus born of 30 years of research on same-sex parenting. 50 years of research on child development. and we learn from the state's own expert that the government in large universities have stopped funding in this area on this topic because of the social science consensus. the wait-and-see approach is not itself a rational basis. it's not even a reason at all. there's another invidious under inclues problem with the state's outcome rationales. no other group in society has to pass a parenting competency test before they're allowed to marry. there are groups of parents in society that we know tend to have children with poorer outcomes on

from michigan state, and i have -- i was on the faculty at michigan state. i went up there last summer and got the shock of my life. i went in and talked to the geology department and found out they have 14 faculty members, and i asked them how many students they graduated last year at the bachelor's level, and they told me eight. and then i asked them how many graduate students they had, and they told me three. i was absolutely appalled at what i see in higher education. i have been essentially a dean of the largest probably oceanography, ocean engineering group, teaching group in the world, and i always made sure my students got jobs. evidently these people aren't getting jobs, and the universities, including the one that i left here many years ago, have all turned into environmental science. the geology department, i figured out there were probably about four or five at the most out of that 14 who were actually geologists. >> okay. president simon? >> well, if you look at the job opportunities for students today, including the number of what i would call

december 2012 in michigan. out of nowhere, kept under incredible wrap s politically, the legislature in michigan came out with a right to work legislation seemingly out of the blue. it was prepared well ahead of time. it had a lot of groundwork. but nobody heard word until suddenly in december it came through. a lame duck legislature that was den graded in the media, it stormed through, it made it. i was so happy that day. i thought, finally i will have choice. according to the michigan right to work law, you can opt out of your union once your contract is over. so i was in a contract. school year starts fiscally july 1 and ends june 30th. i anticipated on june 30 of 2013 to be my last day. on july 1, i prepared my letter and mailed it. i figured i was free. well, low and behold about a month and week later, about a year ago now, i saw on my statement a charge for my monthly dues. i anticipated no charge at all. i was really curious as to this. prior to this -- let me establish once again in may and june antici
