in lansing how did michigan's ag reach that particular conclusion? >> reporter: well, shep, she says that because a michigan commission banned open carry or firearms in the state capitol here on monday, she says that just is not enough she would like to see concealed carry of firearms also banned. however, michigan is one of the few states that does not have that in place. but there are many concerns here and around the country as you mentioned, shep, as state capitols are on alert. we understand that fencing does plan to go up here at the michigan state capitol over the next couple of days, as they do expect protests this weekend now, this all comes after armed protests last april, where armed members of militias got into the state capitol. there was no violence, but many lawmakers said that they felt intimidated. we spoke with one state lawmaker who since then has had a bullet proof vest inside her office she says that she is extremely concerned about the next few days take a listen. >> i'm just here from l.a. i'm going to be honest with you, when

he is in michigan at the state capitol. good morning to you, miguel. obviously, we saw what happened there earlier -- at the end of last year. how are officials preparing to keep it and the people inside safe this week? >> well, so this is all part of a much larger effort in all 50 capitals. michigan is particularly sensitive to this because they've seen so much protest at this building in the past. it is planned for sunday. the so-called stand up for liberty. organizers saying it's going to be an armed but peaceful protest in state capitols. officials are expecting about -- they are planning for thousands of people. they're not sure they'll get that. they'll put up a fence around the capitol. that side of the capitol is already under construction and mostly fenced off and ina inaccessible. they may be able to protect the building itself. but there is concern about how many people will come here and going forward. the governor saying that they are coordinating with state police that are in charge of security. national guard and local police agencies. t

stuff and welcome what are authorities there in lansing michigan preparing for. well they actually preparing for the worst now they don't have the deluxe version like washington d.c. has a 25000 national guard troops and a really sturdy fence what you have here is a few 100 national guard troops a lot of state police of course and a construction site little bit of a flimsy fence there glock ing off the capital right behind me but no doubt floridians here think that they need to be prepared for something your courage is not going to be pleasant and remember that they had this before here this building behind me was stormed by owned by a mob of just a few months back in the height of a coronavirus crisis here in the spring and so this is of course what they don't want to have the problem is here michigan is a free carry state what does that mean is you can buy a gun you can get the gun you put it in your whole store wherever and you walk around you don't for a handgun not even need a license for anything beyond that yes you do but everybody gets one in about whatev

, we saw the michigan state house stormed earlier? >> yesterday there was another protest. there have been protests. people can come together and demonstrate. that's not in and of itself domestic terrorism. what we saw last night, what we saw play out in my capitol earlier last year, that's scary. that's when people are trying to incite violence, threaten one another's safety. we had someone call into a bomb threat into our capitol this morning. the police investigated. there was nothing there. i have checked in with my colleagues across the country. it's not unique to measuichigan. i know this kind of incitement is encouraging this horrible behavior across our country. we can't turn a blind eye when it happens to one person. everyone of us has a duty to call it what it is. these are domestic terrorists. they need to be held accountable. i'm grateful to see people are taking this seriously now. i think about what would have happened if they had when it started eight months ago. >> we had the congresswoman on earlier and we all recall

les bring into the summer and into the fall in michigan as well. events here in michigan have shown what even a handful or small group of people can do when they are politically aggrieved. they have the capability to do great harm. they can organize and train. [indiscernible] and had origins going back to the protest and lansing. that was about as serious as it gets from eight terrorism perspective. federal charges for that do not have the word terrorism in there. for all intensive purposes that was a terrorism plot. there is no other way to describe it. just going back events here on the ground in michigan, i think we would agree they were telling to what happened in washington last week. mr. alikhan: that was a legal protest where you can legally carry an open firearm on the grounds, and today it was still lawfully able to carry a concealed weapon into the capital any it is open. that adds a level of complexity to try to protect a facility like that despite what has happened in the country. mr. ali: that is a law -- nobody asked my opinion but i
