nbc's john yang joins us now from michigan city, indiana.hn, looked pretty rough out there. >> it is cold. i know, chris, you grew up on lake erie in northeastern, ohio. you may have seen this before, i certainly have and this is a frozen piece of a beach. sand mixed with water frozen into a sheet like this. there is a coating of ice on this beach, you can see the water had frozen as it was going back and the waves going back into lake michigan. the big story now is the temperature. it has been falling all morning. the high was before sunrise about 25 degrees and it's now about 16 degrees. and you look out on to these waves, chris, believe it or not in the past couple of days, the harbor master here in michigan city, indiana, has had to chase surfers out of the water. chris? >> unbelievable. take care out there. i know how cold it gets with that wind whipping off the lake, thank you, john. >>> here's a fascinating question. who's better at reading the emotions of others? the rich or those who don't have big bank accounts? there's actually a

there is michigan city, valparaiso.ight here, the in-house model kicks out 20 inches and parts of the area between cities and not far from south bend. that's because of the winds. they are blowing strongly. the winds let up and the colors disappear that means they are letting up. we expect the lake snows they will not be as heavy. we'll get out of this pattern. the forecast is for acouple eye laces to be sizable. and the snow. we're driving around the south end of the lake. there will be trouble. michigan city has 14 inches. and southeast and 17 and a half inchs there. la porte under a 1 # .5 and 9.5. the cold air another story reaching down to florida where it is 49 in tampa. and the cold air extends north into the arctic. there is plenty more where that came from. we have a blocking pattern that holds it over north america. this system will run along the south side and dive into the planes and bring us snow by wednesday night, thursday. it looks like a moderate intensity situation. 11 degrees colder than 24 hours ago.

look at the totals, a foot and-a-half in la port and michigan city, up to 16.ou about these other totals, including about a half foot in south bend, and these snows still to come in these bands. when they run down the lake like this and set up these bands, that means they have 200 miles to pick up moisture. you can go on either side of them and not know what's going on. if you're under them, that's a white out and there's no sign it's breaking down right away because these winds are traveling down the lake. the isso bars here are -- they mark the path that winds follow just above the surface. winds tend to cover across isobars at a 30 degree angle along the surface. you can see why the snow is feeding into places like la port and porter counties, even swiepg sections of lake county and why we're up to 5:30 tomorrow, we'll still have lake snow going up into that area, including barrian county, saint joe county and stark county. tomorrow night, the winds die down and so do the lake snows. this is where our computer models indicate additional accumulations. just l

nbc's john yang leads off our coverage tonight in michigan city, indiana. john, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, brian. here in northwestern indiana along lake michigan, it snowed for the third straight day. folks here are digging out from under 2 feet of snow, and drifts as high as 4 feet. but as you say, the most dramatic conditions were to the east of here. overnight, high winds and blowing snow created whiteout conditions, shutting down a major trucking route into michigan from canada. officials said about 360 cars and trucks were stuck on the highway, leaving hundreds of people trapped in their vehicles. >> how long have you been here? >> going on 24 hours now. >> reporter: winds hit 65 miles per hour, and snowplows were ordered off the roads. police snowmobiles and military helicopters were used to rescue stranded motorists. >> for somebody that's not dressed awarm, it's very dangerous, because you could get cold and run out of gas. >> reporter: area hotel rooms filled up, and people found warming rooms like this church. >> we made it here, tha
