joining me is mick mulvaney, his tenure at the white house overlapped quite a bit with john bolton's time as national security adviser having the competing offices in the west wing, two of the few with a fireplace in them if i'm not mistaken. thank you for coming on. good to see you, sir. >> how are you been? >> oh, you know, locked up like the rest of us here a little bit. let me start quickly, i want to get to the book but the virus. you were chief of staff basically in the early days of this start of the pandemic. >> yeah. >> you got -- you look back on some things that you wish you'd have done sooner, wish the administration had done. have you done your own after action report and feel as if there's things you would have done differently now? >> chuck, it is easy to look back and say would you do things differently? the information changing rapidly. from early on, the only metric, we the only measuring stick was the previous coronavirus as we had dealt with which was sars and mers. these are deadly diseases, a higher fatality rate than coronavirus. but they weren't nearly as cont

kevin: people like mick mulvaney want to know how they are going to pay for it.nkly, if you are looking at this even in the longer term, we are all obsessed with the november election, but if you play this out to 2022, 2024, that is really going to be the battle from an ideological standpoint in the republican party. people like mick mulvaney. they are going to be pressing, how exactly do we pay for this? you're going to see a resurgence of that. i have my eye on senator joni ernst. she recently just launched with senator tim scott a millennial debt coalition, a coalition of republicans increasingly coming to the forefront for a new generation about these types of issues. that is why i am skeptical that a $1 trillion infrastructure plan would have a strong prospect in the fall, but i guess we are to have to wait and see. the president on air force one, he can read a book on the first lady and a book from john bolton. what is he going to read? kevin: i don't think he is going to be reading any of these books. i think his lawyers are going to be reading the john bo

joining me right now is former white house acting chief of staff, mick mulvaney.uch for joining me. >> it's good to be back. thank you. maria: how accurate in your view is a stimulus plan, this next stimulus plan, focused on infrastructure or are there other things in the way of relief that you believe are needed right now? >> yeah, i think a couple different things about that. first of all, infrastructure is a really, really difficult tool to use as stimulus because it takes too long to get the money into the system. i've had the conversations with folks in the administration. it could take years for money to get to things like roads and bridges and so forth. we learned that during the obama administration. infrastructure sounds great but it's a poor short-term stimulative tool. if we're going to look at a larger package, we're going to look at a package, and my guess is congress will, that's what congress does, i hope we look at it through the eyes of the economic need and not the political expediency. i hope if steven mnuchin and kevin hassett go to the preside

just this week, mick mulvaney, the former acting chief of staff said that the president has struggled with hiring in this administration. so the president obviously did not come to this job from a government role, did not have a wide cadre of people to choose from when he came in and also new hires of advisers in his mind, gets frustrated when he feels like people aren't listening to him or, you know, are not taking his advice. i think also to go back to josh's point about the politics of the judge's ruling today on the book can't be ignored as well. obviously the trump administration wanted it to be entirely blocked and they're claiming victory in saying that the judge was very critical of bolton. but also the book is out, you know, the book is already -- excerpts widely printed. stories widely printed and so in an election year, when the president is staring down a very tough path to re-election, it's really trying to turn the page as we see with this rally today, you know, these stories about this book they'll continue in the coming days and these are not helpful narrative force hi

mick mulvaney went on special report last night's saying he believes is still a little too early for the campaign to be relying on these polls. listen to his point. >> obviously would like to be ahead in every single poll but at the same time, you could manipulate easily. the president's approval rating going into the 2016 election was in the upper 30s, yet he still won, so you would like to be ahead in the polls but not too worried at this point in the race. >> sandra: so it was one thing to dismiss or shrug off a few polls leading up to election day but we are getting closer and there certainly is a trend emerging. your thoughts? >> i agree with him in the sense that it is way too early. it is really before the campaign has heated up to decide an election or declare an election loss. that said, i think the polls show the president has some trouble. the riots, the killing of george floyd, just been a lot for the american people. usually, the incumbent bears the blame for that. so i do think the president has to take these seriously and i do think that not everything he did last time
