mickey dolenz joins me exclusively. thank you for joining me. an incredibly difficult day for you. >> that's an understatement. yeah, it's a shock right out of the blue. no one ever suspected what can you say? it's a total shock. i'm a little bit numbed by it all. >> how did you hear the news? >> my wife called me this morning. i was still in bed actually she was out shopping and she called -- got a call from her sister who said she heard it on the news, and i was -- i thought it was another -- frankly i thought it might hav a o u owhoaxes.p je,3 e ats,nd rember "o sorofad liond ovehtt hwa >> obviously the band were huge in the late '60s, '70s and then life moves on. what kind of life did davy have in the last few years? was he content with his life, do you think? >> absolutely, i think so. he was a huge fan of horse racing. he raised racehorses, he had two farms, one in pennsylvania, one in florida, and he would go back and forth in the season and work and basically, you know, even when we were on the road, it was almost all he would talk about

a lot of people, of course, can still name all four monkees, davy jones, mickey dolenz, peter tor andhael nesmisth. in the late '60s, girls would tell you you are either a davy jones girl or micky dolenz girl. peter and michael not so much because they were more the brooding artist type. when we learned davy jones died at age 66, it had people looking back. davy jones was the consensus choice cutest monkee with the floppy hair and british accent that regularly caused swoons to break out. the men behind "the monkees" knew he was worth his weight in gold. "the monkees" were made for tv literally. fans tuned in, not quite realizing what they were watching was nothing less than the birth of the music video. ♪ take the last train to clarkseville ♪ >> he was born in england as world war ii ended. he originally trained to be a race horse jockey, but then discovered acting and singing. later witnessed a history-making moment in music. he was in the play "oliver" performing a number on the "ed sullivan show" the same night as the beatles famous american debut. he watched from the wings and tho

the others were michael nesmith, mickey dolenz and peter tork, his bandmates. band churned out a string of hits, including "i'm a believer," "last train to clarksville" and "daydream believer," on which jones sang lead. most of the hits were actually written by well-known songwriters like neil diamond and carol king. most of the records featured studio musicians. critics dubbed the group a pre-fab four. a knock jones dismissed. >> the press labeled us the manufactured band. but like anything, you make arrangements to do stuff. >> the show aired from 1966 to 1968 and turned jones into a teen idol. after the show was canceled, jones continued acting. the monkees got a star in 1989. fans will never for get the >> hey, hey we're the monkees. it probably goes off in your head when you mention the name. mickey dolenz is one of the rick nal members of the monkees and a long-time friend of davy jones. orning, mickey. it's an emotional morning. pretty tough day. >> yes. it came as a big shocker. right out of the blue. you know, he was the last one that i thought would you know -- he's the youngest one of us. and i suspect a little bit it might have been genetics, you know i think both of his parents passed pretty early on. >> his mother died when he was very young. people don't realize he quit school, he dropped out of school when that happened. >> his father passed away also, i believe with a heart attack. when he wasn't very old, either. >> and yet, he always seemed on camera, mickey, as this cup half-full guy. is that what he was like, in your life? >> yeah, he was always the go-to guy for fun and for a laugh. and he -- he never took himself or any of us, we never took ourselves very seriously, you couldn't, you know. and he was, you know, a jokester. and always was. and we hung out a lot together. we, i remember him very clearly, because we had similar back grounds. even in the
