because this is going to be pushing down beyond the northeast and the mid-atlantic.re looking at west virginia experiencing these smoky conditions. what do people need to be keeping in mind? >> i think people need assess their own risk. and you know, the immediate effect of living in these smoky really unusually smoky conditions is that the smoke contains fine particulates which become really an acute respiratory irritant. and to people who are prone to respiratory problems like people who do have asthma or copd or bronchitis or are recovering from a lung infection or who have congestive heart failure, the air and smoke can cause acute respiratory problems. those folks should stay indoors until the conditions improve. for people without those chronic conditions, it's not great to be in that environment, but it's probably not super dangerous. having said that, when the air looks brown, maybe it's better to stay inside for most of the day. >> yeah, sounds like a pretty good idea. doctor, obviously the forecast is changing as we speak, but it looks like it is going to b

also right now the crisis is spreading southward into the mid-atlantic states and beyond.the situation is like where you are. >> reporter: wolf, it's very dicey here in richmond and the mid-atlantic area. they know it's not as bad as it is in new york city. but they also know that it's going to get worse here in the coming hours and days. take a look at the skyline over richmond. now, it's really fluctuated here in the last few hours. about three or four hours ago, the haze and smoke over downtown richmond was very, very bad. it then kind of cleared out because we had some heavy winds. you can see now over the downtown area smoke and haze kind of coming back settling into the downtown area. here is what state officials were telling us about the readings here in virginia in the richmond area and what they're warning residents. they're saying that as far as the particulate pollution, at a code orange or red. that means it's unhealthy for certain groups. state officials are warning people you have got to limit your time outdoors. they're telling people with respiratory ailmen

even dips farther into the mid-atlantic, down into the southeast.e for maybe a state or two or three. you really have a lot of these areas that are dealing with that smoke. one thing to note is yesterday and the day before, we had a lot more of that widespread across the midwest. thanks to rain showers and storms that moved through, we were able to clear out a lot of that smoke. the same thing will happen as we push later into the weekend, where you're really going to see a lot of that smoke clear back out across the ohio valley, the tennessee valley, and areas of the mid-atlantic. eventually into the northeast, as well, maybe perhaps at least 48 hours from now and into monday and tuesday of next week. but we will get there. we just have to wait for a lot of those rain showers to come in and clear the air out. another big concern for this weekend is the prolonged heat. it's not just across the south but also out to the west, as well. those afternoon high temperatures getting well into the triple digits, and the overnight lows not really dropping bel

storms will fire up in the mid-atlantic even into the northeast.nd late tonight, we're also seeing storms start to fire up across the south. and another round of storms overnight for some of the same areas that were hit very hard last night. we're going to talk about main threats being the damaging wind and large hail. however, you can't rule out the possibility of an isolated tornado across portions of north carolina into the mid-atlantic. this does include d.c., philadelphia, even new york city could see strong storms later today. there's also a flash flood threat, with the storms comes heavy rainfall. we're going to see the potential for flash flooding as well that could result in airport delays later this afternoon. folks would love some rain to cool off a little bit. texas, we have seen extreme heat across texas and that's going to continue. this is a current heat index feels like 92, in dallas and shreveport, areas that have been hit very, very hard. rio grande, excessive heat warnings advisories in effect. this does include houston, dallas,

but in the short term, a lot of the really dense smoke is hovered a little more over the mid-atlanticnew jersey, pennsylvania, maryland, delaware. that's where you'll find more of your unhealthy and poor air quality at least for the sensitive groups at least in the short term. most of that smoke is very concentrated over the mid-atlantic, but we're going to start to see a shift late friday and into the weekend. it's all thanks to a cold front that's going to be sliding down across canada. as it does so, it's going to bring rain across nova scotia, bringing relief for much of this region entirely as that rain begins to push in. it's not only going to provide rain to put those fires out but also bring those temperatures back down. right now we're in the 90s for much of this region, finally getting the temperatures back down to where they should be as we head into the weekend. >> all right, allison, thank you for that update. we appreciate it. jim. >>> coming up, a shocking report of u.s. marines drinking and showering in toxic water after their ship dumps diesel fuel into the ocean and

city, these are all live pictures of the haze being seen across the northeast and mid-atlantic. at one point yesterday new york city topped the list for the world's worst air pollution. today new yorkers can barely make out the city skyline. just check this out. philadelphia just issued a code red air quality warning urging all residents to stay indoors. even here in washington, we are feeling the hazy effects. let's get to cnn meteorologist jennifer gray on this story. it is something to look outside. it's really inescapable. how long are we expecting it to go on? >> it really is something, you're right. you know, this could be something we deal with off and on throughout the remainder of the summer. canada is still early in their fire season and it is just exploded. while some days might be better than others this could be a problem we're talking about long term. current advisability, less than a mile. we could see ground stops for some of the big airports today because of the thick smoke. it is just coming in from canada just blanketing all of the northeast, new england, all
