linsey. >> linsey: a number of warnings there in the mid-atlantic in particular. let's bring in somara theodore. we talked about snow and ice, but it's also bringing severe weather to the south. what can residents there expect? >> reporter: yes, in fact, a tornado has been reported in arkansas and a tornado watch is in effect from eastern texas through louisiana into mississippi. on the northern tier of the storm, that's where we're dealing with the snowfall tonight along i-70. by tomorrow morning, this could be a commuting mess for the mid-atlantic, specifically the washington, d.c. area, along i-95, in southern virginia is where we could see icing. and this storm system will linger through tomorrow evening. by the time it's said and done, up to a half inch of significant icing could be occurring in northern kentucky and washington, d.c. is in for potentially their biggest snow storm in three years. after this is done on thursday, temperatures in d.c. will feel like 2 degrees below zero, and that's the day of the final procession for president jimmy carter. linse

it's going to go into the midwest, the ohio valley and eventually into the mid-atlantic over the next 24 to 48 hours. so here is a live look at saint louis. again, kind of the gloomy skies. but notice here this little walkway, you've got that thin coating of ice and wintry weather on the ground there. do not worry, this is a statue, not a live person. no one is standing out there. the temperature right now, 25 degrees there. it is very cold. a lot of these areas already have that coating of ice on the ground. look at all of these locations. at least a quarter of an inch of ice. keep in mind that's not only enough to coat the roads, obviously, but also your power lines, your trees to cause power outages. and colby, kansas getting dangerously close to half an inch of ice accumulation. now, we talked about this yesterday. it's going to be that coating of ice first. then the snow is going to come down on top of it for some of these places, which makes it even more dangerous because you simply cannot see it. here's a look at what we've got. and we've got a plethora out there. we've got sno

winter storm warnings are right now in effect from the ohio valley to the mid-atlantic with temperatures plunging in the coming days due to a polar vortex. officials are trying to clear the roads and get the lights back on as soon as possible. we're very aggressive with our snow removal operation here. but i'll take us a few days probably to fully clear and clean the entire city everywhere. >> the polar vortex is pulling extremely cold air down from the north pole. it's expected to bring temperatures down about 12 to 25 degrees colder than normal. raising fears of frostbite and hypothermia and many people in those areas are out and about spending time with their neighbors and trying to enjoy what they're calling a winter wonderland before. it all ices over here just over wasn't that cold. but >> looks like things are going to be, you know, change chilly there for a little while. let's check in with our chief meteorologist lawrence karnow. for more on lawrence, i've always thought to be fun for maybe a couple of about his head open and that snow. wilder, that's arts a little bit old. but

winter storm warnings, ice warnings, stretching from the plains and ultimately along the mid atlanticll. on the southern end of the storm, this is not winter weather, but a risk here across some of the gulf states of seeing some severe weather, three on a scale of five, isolated tornados are possible and the headline of this entire weather system is going to be that snow. these are snowfall totals anywhere that you see pink color, that park darker pink, 8 to 12 inches. huge swath indiana and illinois. and some are a foot, foot and a half of snow and again, does push itself to d.c., seek some totals six, eight, 12 inches in some of the isolated areas. maybe the bigger story with this ultimately before it's said and done is going to be the ice, major ice event here across springfield to louisville. this is going to be an area where we could see a ton of downed power lines and behind this really, really cold air, so, power down and then cold air could mean a tough situation for folks. molly: all right, adam klotz with some more tv time ahead this week with our tv team, griff. griff: comi
