this is at middlebury college. it should be clear that the first amendment is not a part of an issue, constitutional rights for all american -- americans exist, not just for those of one party, or one faction, indeed a crackdown on speech crosses creeds, races, issues and religion. at brown university, a speech to promote transgender rights was canceled after students protested because a jewish group cosponsored the election. virginia tech disinvited a conservative african-american speaker because he had written on race issues and they worried about protests. it might disrupt the event. this is not in the great tradition of america. these trends are very disturbing. far too many schools are complicit to prevent genuine debate and engagement with ideas. through things such as trigger warnings about micro-aggression. they have -- faith spaces, offshore exams, therapy goes, grade inflation. many schools are coddling on people and actively preventing them from scrutinizing the validity of their beliefs and the issues o

so i was disappointed that students at middlebury college disrupted him before he even got a chance to engage in discussion, and i think it was a pretty viable discussion that could have happened. but it broke down into a ruckus in which one faculty member was injured. a month before that, there was an event featuring the controversial pundit -- i call him a comedian himself -- anyway, marlin -- melo annapolis. it was canceled after a peaceful protest turned violent at new york university. 11 people were arrested at a speech by another comedian, gavin mcgicguinnesmcguinness. there was a speech by nationalist richard spencer in march of this year, a college in portland. students disrupted a speech by christina summers at a law school there. i don't find her to be a danger to persons in kind, but either way, the purpose of having a scholar at a university is to engage in dialogue, not just monologue. even the comedians chris locke and jerry seinfeld won't go on campus because of the politics, committees and other folks. things are different than it was when i was in college, but it's sup
