we are in middletown looking at it. we're in lake county. it looks big, but it looks like it's holding steady. we're not watching it roar in many directions like what we saw on that first day of the fire when the wind was really howling. we are not experiencing wind down here in the town. the town feels calm. there's no smoke down here. it's just very cold. the sheriff here indicated yesterday that they had a sense that the fire might leave lake county alone. >> we're not getting much more spread. we're getting good feedback from cal fire on whether that fire will pose a threat or not. right now it looks like it's not. >> there was a concern that this was going to move into lake county. so they got aggressive. and it looks like their efforts paid off. this threat wasn't the only thing residents have had to deal with. they have not had power. many of them have not had it since saturday. school has been canceled. it's very cold. the sheriff declared a state of emergency here. they're hoping that pg&e will give them the all clear from this wind

they want to fire there and not moving down the hill and into middletown, which is why for now. it is a the warning, not a mandatory evacuation that these people have been told get your bag ready to go just in case the fire moves along the ridgeline races through the dry terrain and gets to their homes. again that's what we saw a couple years ago, so unfortunately these are veterans of evacuations as far as the fire. we do expect aircraft to be up and maybe 30 minutes or so because it's such a remote area that fighting the fire will probably be done once again the heavy lifting will be from the air. they have cal fire crews on the ground and they slept during the overnight hours just to watch it to make sure that it doesn't race too far beyond their control but the containment lines we just gave the numbers that is great news, the acreage did not explode in the overnight hours as far as the totality the kincade fire including this one here this is part of the kincade fire. so let's hope it stays there the next time you see me james and area we will give you that vantage point we

. >> reporter: we are just off highway 29 right next to butts canyon road in middletown. behind me, not something we want to see with smoke pouring from the side of that mountain and earlier, we were at the top and we caught a devastating view of the eastern side of the kincade fire. this video shows how intensely the fire was burning before the sun came out. at western mine road and 29, it's an access road for file vehicles and dozers. this is where the kincade fire group, on the eastern flank and pushed into lake county, causing cal fire to issue evacuation orders. when we got to the top at about 5:30, we didn't notice a breeze but by 8:00, the wind picked up and it is expected to get stronger. that will create a tough day for firefighters and this is what they are up against. >> it's a challenging afternoon was strong and dry offshore wind impacting the fire area. we are in this critical 24 hour window and we hope the wind will he ease off after midnight tonight. tomorrow, humidity will be incredibly dry for the region, on the order of 5% to 15%. >> reporter: the air a

we are in between middletown and northeast of jimtown from what i gather on the map. this is where we found a glow. that's really good news because we are in a pretty remote area up pine flat road about -- a lot of so-called mop up work happening throughout the burn area around kinkaid fire. engines are using watter to cool anything also cutting fire line and clearing brush all to do what they can to prevent the red flag winds from picking up the still burning embers and blowing them up to a half mile ahead of firefighters. . >> everybody is still and test pay thing the high rates of spread. erratic fire behavior. we are seeing that push some of the fire embers back into the main burn. >> reporter: right now, the goal is to keep all the burning embers inside those containment lines and protect the homes and buildings still standing. that fight has been nothing but short of amazing. 27 helicopters been assigned to battle the fire. they have 2.1 million gallons of water that has been dumped on flames. fire has made it to the edge of the tubs fire burn scar. that is abou

we've seen it as high as 76 miles per hour in middletown to the north of where the kinkade fire is. and so we are going to see at times those erratic winds causing the fire direction to shift and we've seen a more brisk northeasterly wind blowing the fire to the southwest. we're watching that. gusts up to 54. for the east bay breezy conditions but mostly at our higher elevations. the reason we had the elevations above 1,000 feet. it's been very warm. the firefight letters have to fight this blaze in 90 degree temperatures. those gusts kicking up at times heading closer to geyserville. this is one of the weather cameras on geyser peak. we've seen fire crews battling the blaze from that direction as well. we'll have more updates on this all throughout the morning and will continue our coverage live online at nbcbayarea.com. mike, you're tracking it from the roads. >>> that's right, kari, tracking allf the traffic around the bay. i want to hit this first. this is where kari was showing you the high winds as well as the fire right off 128. we just got word, again, mandatory evacuations

of course middletown was destroyed by the valley fire in 2016, so a lot of people with anxiety there. fire crews were here yesterday and tried to build a line to keep this from spreading down into lake county. they are really ready for anything. >> working on a pretty robust contingency plan, preparing for that thing to come across the lake county line if it were to do that. >> reporter: because of the concern the fire was spreading east, cal fire issued an evacuation warning for highway 29 bus canyon road south to the county line, and highway 175 between highways 29 and middleton road. anywhere in those areas, the you're in those areas, definitely be prepared to evacuate. when i was talking about the flames, look at this. it's unbelievable. every time we think it's died down, unbelievable flames just going up in the air. thankfully there are no homes in this area. this is a very rural area, no homes to speak of that we can see at least. just a lot of vegetation to burn here. the fire really hasn't moved too much but you can see the plume of smoke going up as the fire continues to bur

so middletown is still certainly watching this, of course, very closely. but they have gotten that 30% containment. and we are expecting a new update as we head throughout this hour. tomorrow, wind forecast. i don't see anyig gusts. in fact into friday, 5 to 10 miles per hour even on saturday, 5 to 10 miles per hour as well. we're even looking at the potential here of some rain ahead. coming up in about 15 minutes, we'll take a look at a new warning, but this is cold weather related. a frost advisory for the north bay. i'll have details on that again in about 15 minutes. >> okay, jeff. we'll see you shortly. this is all a sobering reminder of the deadly wine country fires that we lived through two years ago. here is the burn map now. here are the cities. geyserville, healdsburg, santa rosa just to get a perspective of where we are along 101. the gray areas from the tubbs fire, nuns fire, atlas fire, that's what happened two years ago. you can see the kincade fire right there in red as reached the edge of the tubbs fire burn scar. for comparison now, those
