the sky in midland is a flawless dome. the land doesn't pitch or rise. it remains perfectly flat without buildings or bright lights to obscure the view. for as far as back as i can remember on a particularly spectacular summer night, mother would gather a blanket and we'd go outside to lie on the ground and gaze up into the sky. and as we lay together up on the hard grass, she would say look up, laura, look up. and it was then as a bright eyed girl that i began the look up and to look out across that landscapes and not to miss the beauty around us. since then, conservation and the protection of our natural world has been a part of my life. i've hiked in national park with my childhood friends for over the last 30 years. as first lady, i advocated for the protection of our lands and oceans through the national parks service and the marine debris initiative. and today, i work in conservation through prairie restoration at the bush center and at our ranch in crawford. and through the non-profit i founded texan by nature. you may not know that the bush cente
