midwest. >> northeast, you're right. then in parts of the midwest shockingly cold.ome numbers this morning, it is 25 degrees below zero in fargo. minneapolis, below subzero conditions there. 10 below. sioux falls, des moines, omaha, kansas city, single digits. same story in green bay, milwaukee milwaukee and chicago. today we expect things to modify a bit in terms of the temperatures. going right to 32 in memphis. 38 in atlanta. 51 tampa. 54 houston. that's only part of the story. other issue is the strong winds we're dealing with in parts of the nation where windchill factors will feel like it is anywhere from 0 to 20 degrees. great lakes will feel like it is 10 below just in terms of the windchill. heavy snow may continue for parts of upstate maine. look for scattered snow showers across new york, into pennsylvania. snow showers also possible across parts of the central plains, back into the midwest. pacific northwest will see rain along the coast, and snow back into the interior washington state and parts of the columbia liver valley. that's the latest for your f

it has been a tough week in the midwest.tional falls, minnesota, the self-proclaimed ice box of the nation, hit negative 37, breaking a 30-year record that was without the windchills. today, negative 34, no windchills. there has been wind this week, 40-mile-an-hour gusts. you can imagine what it has been like to be out. and storms along with it, some bad enough to close interstates and highways. interstate 90 along the southern edge of minnesota closed for a time this week and prompted governor tim pawlenty of minnesota to activate the national guard. it has been a tough week throughout the midwest. despite that, people here are coming out today. we're seeing skiers, people on sleds, people on snowmobiles. and you see a few people out ice fishing. as you can imagine, no problem with the frozen lake with these temperatures. and obviously frozen well enough that we can drive cars and things on them. so all of those shacks out there, people who have ventured out in this awful weather. and they say it is possible to do it. you t

it's a combination of low pressure over the canadian maritimes with high pressure in the midwest. both of these systems kind of like fighting with each other and creating this tremendous pressure gradient that -- where you see these lines of equal pressure close together. that's when you get strong winds. that's what's happening. it's windy from new england all the way back into kentucky. and as a result, we're tapping cold air from the upper midwest where, this morning, it was 35 below zero up in frostbite falls, minnesota, up in northern parts of minnesota. it was down to 30 below zero there. and we're tapping some of that cold air and it's going to be in place here for the next several days. so get used to it. keep the warmest winter gear you have handy. we'll have highs today only briefly getting a little above freezing, and maybe a few flurries passing through the air. overnight tonight, should be partly cloudy, down into the 20s, mid-20s b midnight and just near 20 degrees by dawn tomorrow. then on the day on tuesday, should be partly cloudy, afternoon highs in the mid-30s,

flows on the other side of the high and that allows some of the warm air that has been out in the midwest and the ohio voifl. it has been in the 20's and thirts. when we say a high temperature of 45 will feel nice, it will. when you were talking about 45-degree temperatures a few months ago you wouldn't say that obviously. i think the breeze will start to pick up out of the south and southwest later today. here is the setup here on the east coast. the jet stream is going to buckle a little bit in the mid-atlantic region which means it is going to push to the north. tomorrow we're going to see high temperatures warmer than today. we'll be in the up r 40's to around 50. at the same time there is a little dip in the jet stream. moving across texas developing an area of low pressure in the gulf of mexico. you see the direction of movement here. this area of low pressure will develop in the gulf of mexico and right up toward us over the weekend stand you recall, that's what happened back in december when we had that big storm. the difference is this time there is no cold air for this to play w

these are the lows across the northern plains and upper midwest, but we've really got the coldest airight now bottled up. minus 21, that's not with the wind chill, that's actual temperature as we go overnight tonight. so, extremely dangerous wind chills. as i mentioned, this arctic plunge is going to fall as far south as florida, jacksonville 36 overnight tonight, lows in the 20's into next week. and this arctic chill is going to be with us for the next several days, early next week as well. the storm we are watching is the same system that brought us kind of a wintery mix for new year's eve, it's going to get its act together across the gulf of maine and bring quite a bit of snow across northern new england, upstate new york, where we've also got that lake effect snow happening. snow accumulations the next 24 hours, six to 12 inches and winds will bring blizzard-like conditions heading into the weekend, so people are asked to call ahead if you're picking someone up at the airport or dropping someone off. gregg, back to you. >> gregg: janice dean, thank you very much. whether you pref
