than a foot of snow, or more, in the midwest. now, it's expected to get bad right around game time. illinois state police telling anyone on the road to be extremely cautious. tracking the storm live in the weather center, and they really do need to be careful, right? >> especially across the midwest, which is where the storm is right now. chicago's o'hare airport already reporting close to 9 inches of snow. in some cases an inch and a half a an hour. you can see where the heavy snow is spreading across iowa indiana, michigan, ohio, in towards pennsylvania. and, again, we're talking about over a foot in a lot of these areas as we get into the overnight. there's chicago an additional 10 inches here. this is going to be a big snowstorm for them as well as in detroit. north of cleveland and buffalo. so, again, as the afternoon progresses as we get into the super bowl time, people are urged to stay off the roads, especially around the chicago area. where we have blizzard conditions happening right now with winds in excess of 30, 40 mi

right now the most active weather is through the midwest.e do have a blizzard warning that's in effect for the chicago area. that will be until midnight tonight. those blizzard conditions will get going by about 2:00 in the afternoon. so the heaviest snow is going from chicago over to ft. wayne. we're getting 1 to 2 inches per hour. conditions are really starting to deteriorate. chicago has already picked up about 5 inches of snow. that's going to continue. the winds will pick up. visibility will lower. as we head into the next couple of hours. the rain/snow line set up right through indianapolis. it pushes just south of pittsburgh. so that rain/snow line is going to be very crucial as this storm pushes off to the northeast to see who gets rain and ice and who gets the snow. here's a look at futurecast as we roll this through. through the evening, we're looking at snow still on the back edge of this still through chicago. so they're still looking at blizzard concerns. into detroit, heavy snow. then we start to push in buffalo, scranton and c

snowfall mixed tription for areas in midwest to great lakes east ward to new england. you can see radar area of low pressure is off to the north of cincinnati. knowledge ever the snow we have snow stretching out from chicago to great lakes on east ward. to the south of the system warmer air comes in from the south and from southerly direction. warmer air is getting pulled into this and as a result we find a mixed bag of precip across the delaware and lehigh valleys. we'll go in tighter on stormtracker 6 double scan 3d. light snow along the 95 corridor. and snowfall across interior sections of south jersey. you have to rain for cape may and dover delaware. on street-level you see route 322 lancaster in between pottstown as well. light snowfall from there. norristown malvern route 1 chester county and along the 95 corridor starting to pick up steadier snowfall close to medford great lakes. south of that region you have mainly rain conditions. it's for philadelphia that 95 corridor chester and lancaster counties and through sections of south jersey and also for middletown

snow is already hitting the midwest, more than 2,000 flights have been cancelled and if you're headed out to a super bowl party this evening. well the weather could be even worse on the way home. we'll have full coverage for you. ryan young is in chicago, martin savidge in cleveland and sarah is in laguardia airport in new york. ryan let's begin with you in chicago, first of all, welcome to cnn, your first assignment and you're in the middle of snow. >> reporter: we have been tracking this event since about 3:30 this morning and they're calling it an extreme weather event. and if you look around you can see all this snow that's piled around when we first started, about three inches since then another five to six inches have fallen. they actually believe that up to a foot of snow will fall today and that's more than fell all last month. at the airport, 1,100 flights have been cancelled all over the country. the major thoroughfares have been cleared out. but so far no power has been knocked out. but they are making sure they want to tell everyone to check on their neighbors next door wh

in to the midwest and chicago during the overnight hour.same process will happen here, but you can see that line dip to the south, barely kind of grazing that beltway here with that icy mix. and then as we head through the overnight that it very quickly gets washed away. by the time you're stepping out the door on monday morning that we would have rain falling and the windy conditions that will be starting to move in, which these wind gusts will be in excess of 30 miles per hour in the afternoon, possibly over 40 miles per hour at times. some wrap around snow showers west of the divide. that is very typical on the backside of this storm system and then tuesday will be a very cold day, partly cloudy, dry, and another weak system approaching on wednesday, which looks like we could get just a little bit of the snow on thursday. but that is not looking like a big deal either. breaking it down for you, what to expect the precipitation type. as we would see just a little bit of the sleet or the freezing rain mixing in here with the rain and in pl

the midwest is digging out as the snowfall stops in the northeast. now people there are bracing for the bitter cold which is settling in across the region. >>> meantime life is getting back to normal in ohio after the storm swept through there. martin savage has all the details from cleveland. >> reporter: finally here in the midwest, cleveland, they can say that things are looking a little brighter. sunshine is out. the snow has stopped, but there's plenty of it on the ground. not a record by any means, 8 to 10 inches. cleveland's well capable of handling that. but what has made it so brutal has been the wind. an exceedingly strong wind that's been blowing for the last 24 hours. it's a problem because it causes the snow to drift. and on top of that, it just makes the bitter cold that much colder. wind chills have been well below zero. and as a result of that, anybody walking on the street can tell you, it has not been a pleasant day. and then eventually trying to clear the snow and ice, you need salt to work it it doesn't work as effectively in thes
