miguel marquez in perth, miguel, let me start with you. what is the latest on the bluefin? >> well, it is probably done with its search now which means it is either very close or clou completely done with 100%, where they thought they would find the missing airliner. that was the area where the second ping, the strongest ping, remember they got four of those pings. there were two of great quality or good quality. two that were not as good. this was the best of the bunch. they hoped to find it there. what they say now is they're going to search adjacent areas to it before they probably move this entire road show north. the question is, where that first ping was picked up over a long period of time that is about six miles from where they're searching now, six miles north. the u.s. navy is going to move everything up there. it is a different underwater topography, so it may take a different tool to do that. it is not clear how long they will search with the bluefin in this initial search area. the other thing to consider is that the ocean shield launching the bluefin has to ev

>> miguel marquez, thank you very much. richard quest now in kuala lumpur, where many of the family members have gathered. what are the questions some of the families have been asking and not getting answers to? >> reporter: well, i have them here for you. this is the latest sort of questions, 26 of them. some of them are the sort of questions you might have thought we'd know by now, what are the levels and speed of the pain that were used in the calculation to derive its final position? are there plans to fit cameras on the tip of bluefin-21 for visual sightings? give you one or two others, how is the investigation conducted? did malaysia share raw data? is it possible for the elts to function? there's lots of them that you might at this point in the investigation say, well, why have they not been given these facts? i do know that in beijing at a particularly acrimonious and unpleasant meeting between families and authorities, they are now, malaysia is now, bringing technical experts to answer these questions, but sometime

what is the latest, miguel? bluefin is down for its latest dive. we'll get a readout on that dive in about four or five hours as it typically happens. as it goes through the last bit of the promising area, if they can't find it there, they will have to go back to the drawing board and figure out a new plan. new pictures show bluefin-21 on the deck of "ocean shield," the best hope for finding missing malaysia flight 370. it's prepped for another dive. the vessel has searched t two-thirds of the most promising area around where the best ping was picked up on april 8th. >> i expected that i was going to get a lot of questions on flight 370. >> reporter: outgoing deborah hersman, flight 370, front acenter. >> certainly if we find those recorders, we'll have a better chance of finding out what happened. >> reporter: the best lead rests on the ability of blue fine 21 and the location deciphered from satellite data where the plane went down and on four weak pings, just as the batteries in the black boxes were dying. >>

miguel marquez is in perth tonight. miguel, officials called off the air search today.ent they're searching in the right place, now we have these new images and allegations? >> yes, they are is the simple answer. they believe that tin mar sat data and the pings they heard, two of them of high quality, two of them of lower quality certainly are good. australian officials are discounting what georesonance is saying, that the area where they are looking isn't even on the northern arc, and it is not something that they are concerning themselves with, although the nations are. all of this as the bluefin continues to search here. it did not go down yesterday because of weather. maybe back down today. we'll find that out shortly. but it will continue to search north from where it was previously. the site of the second ping. and it will move toward the area of the first ping, which was picked up on april 1. it has until about may 15th before that ship. but it's on the ocean shield. has to come back into port for refueling. back to you. >> thanks very much, miguel. >>> now let's

well begin our coverage with miguel marquez in perth tonight. miguel, what are they going to do next? >> well, they're going to regroup, literally. they're going to -- if the bluefin can't come up with anything in the next couple days in the search area that it is searching. keep in mind they do know the plane is down there, it's just a matter of where it is. if they can't come up with it in the initial search, they may expand that search out. they may decide on a different area that may be more promising, given that they had four pings, two of them really good. they may be able to get some better information on that. failing that, there is the possibility that they will literally shut things down for a day, perhaps more. and then they will redeploy resources and try to do a much broader search, whether that's with towed devices, whether that is like in air france 447 where they had several device, several autonomous underwater vehicles going all at the same time. while that is going on, the countries are also considering how they move forward t

and as nbc's miguel almaguer reports for us tonight, it has everyone's attention. >> reporter: every day millions cross it's path. the 25-mile puente hills thrust fault, which slices bel s below neighborhoods, downtown skyscrapers, bridges and freeways. >> southern california is the most likely source of a great earthquake, 7.8 or greater in the united states at this point. >> reporter: seismologist lucy jones prepares for the inevitable. it may be the notorious san andreas fault that ruptures, but what worries her the most is the puente hills fault. a week ago today, a 5.1 on that fault broke water manes, cracked foundations and triggered a rock slide. experts say a 7.5, a big one here, would be catastrophic. this was the epicenter of last week's quake. an l.a. suburb packed with middle class homes. experts say if the big one struck on the same fault line, 18,000 people could be killed, 750,000 left homeless. the problem is bridges aren't built to modern earthquake codes and hundreds of buildings are made of vulnerable concrete. l.a.'s iconic general hospital had to be shutdown in '

let's go to cnn's miguel marquez where the tenth mission is under way.resume. what's the latest, miguel? >> reporter: the latest is that they are looking at two tracks here. perhaps bluefin-21 will not come up with anyone in this initial search. at the same time, they are looking down the road to other attempts to both manage the remains and debris from mh-370 when they finally do find it. bluefin-21, the autonomous underwater vehicle, or auv, searching the most promising area deep beneath the southern indian ocean if it fipds no praise, it could be replaced about a larger towed mapping device, capable of capturing a wider picture of the sea floor. or in the case of air france flight had 47, several auvs severaling simultaneously. this is how they found air france 447 for the first time, a smudge on the screen. the air search for flight 370 has never stopped, despite terrible odds. >> we're looking for absolutely anything that could be mh-370. >> reporter: hundreds of air crews from the u.s. and australia blanketing the southern indian ocean like a patch

miguel marquez is in augusta, australia. so michael and miguel, two big pieces of news out of australia tonight that together give us a pretty good idea of where this sort of stands. michael, i'm going to start with you on the fact that over 90% of the search area has been scandaled by the blue -- been scanned by the bluefiner and there's absolutely no sign of the plane. what are officials saying about this. >> reporter: you're right, don. mission 11 done, mission 12 is underway. search official telling us only 10% of that concentrated search area yet to be scanned. the news the same, nothing of significance pp the story is same with that final 10%. it moves on. it doesn't stop. the australian defense minister said australia consulting with malaysia, china, also the united states, on what would be the next phase in this search. details likely to be announced next week. it will likely involve that wider arc we've been talking about just to the north of the current area, several hundred miles along what was the suspected fligh

miguel marquez is in perth. hello to both of you. miguel, i understand there's been a change of today's search plans based on the tropical cyclone. what can you tell us about that? >> yeah, this is something they did not want to call off. very early this morning they said the plane would be flying in the surface search for mh370 and later in the day said it was not going to happen. and despite what beautiful a day it seems in perth at the moment, the seas and the air, they have about four kilometers of visibility out in that area. the seas are very high, which makes it very difficult to spot anything, and the winds are up and it's also raining in certain areas there. they believe getting the planes up and out there in those search areas, in some cases thousands of miles away from australia, was not really worth it. in any event, this far on from when that plane went down, pilots we speak to and professionals say, look, it's going to be extraordinarily difficult to find anything related to mh370 at this point. don? >> as we've been se

miguel marquez is our man on the scene for us. you've got more exclusive reporting on the next phase of the search, miguel. what can you tell us about a time table? >> reporter: well, look, there's two different time tables. one, they want to finish the search they are doing now and looks like they are just about completed with that. if they do not find that airliner down there, they will regroup, go back to the drawing board, figure out whether or not they are going to search in that area or if they are going to broaden out that search in a much bigger fashion using different devices in order to scan larger parts of the ocean, or as in the case of 447, air france 447, use several underwater vehicles all at the same time, so they are on a 24/7 sort of basis looking at a wide swath of the ocean there. they know the plane is down there, it's just a matter of finding it. at the same time that is happening, malaysian officials talking to australian officials and others about the way forward once they find that wreckage, how that debri
