miguel marquez is live in baltimore. me, you're walking with the folks, what are they saying? >> reporter: well, this is a very busy road here. just turn around here it if you would, and this is what we're marching down right now. they are trying to gather more protesters as they walk through the streets here of baltimore. we look at the rest of the protesters as they try to gain more strength before they go to the fraternal order of police the police union. the police union has been very very active in supporting the police officers and the people here say they want to be just as active in knowing that -- letting the police know that they will hold them to account through this entire process. this is one of the organizers of this. why are you guys out here? >> we're out here to make sure that marilyn mosby stays on the case. we believe she is done a great job at bringing up the indictment indictments. we're also out here to bring attention to the attacks and violence that have happened on communities of color by police.

miguel.ciate that. i'm joined now by neal franklin. head trainer for the baltimore police. there he is. i've been reading these stories, as they have been unfolding over especially this weekend, neil. you have close ties to baltimore and you say that this wave of violence is directly tied to the curfew and the riots. explain that. >> well yeah there are three basic reasons, and baltimore, like many cities like chicago, has a very healthy drug trade an elicit drug trade. and the riot then followed by the curfew disrupted that drug trade. and we in law enforcement know when you disrupt the balance of the elicit drug trade, soon after you experience violence many times. so case in point, for more than a week. the corners where drugs are being sold in open air drug markets, those have literally been shut down especially in west baltimore, where they have a very heavy police presence. in addition to that we have a number of pharmacies that were looted. and a large number of pharmaceutical painkill

nbc national correspondent miguel almaguer is in northern california for us. miguel? >> reporter: lester, good evening. lake oroville is symbolic of the drought out west. this is the second largest reservoir in this region. spend just a few minutes here, and you will quickly see why the outlook is grim. it can hold three-and-a-half million acre feet of water. this massive lake, a critical water supply for our daily lives from drinking to irrigation, even fighting fires. the water is pumped to cities like san francisco and los angeles. the shoreline in oroville spans 167 miles, and that's where you see it most. the dramatic water loss is exposing a vast terrain of brown hills and valleys that used to be submerged. california's drought is changing our landscape. during the good years, you can see the waterline just below this bridge. but after a crippling dry spell, now four years long, the water is dropping every day. plunging some 150 feet. and it's not just oroville in trouble. every major reservoir in california, and there are 12 scattered across this state, plays a

now going to miguel marquez also on the move with protesters. and i was out by the cvs today in baltimore. there was a heavy police presence as well as national guard presence there. while people were beginning to celebrate, i'm beginning to wondering, are there a lot of people on the streets following the protesters but because of the change in mood not quite so monitored? >> reporter: we've seen no police today. we saw some yesterday for the first time and this -- this protest is absolutely amazing. look at this anderson. the truck there that you see in front of you, is going the wrong way down mlk boulevard here. there are thousands of protesters in this crowd. the three different protests descended on penn and north. hello, hello. three different protests all to pen and north and now snaking toward downtown. literally taking over streets of the city. and everywhere you go -- this. the honking. and everybody showing support there this. it is a sight to see. one thing that everybody i have spoken to has said though just like jason has heard, t

cnn's miguel marquez has more. >> reporter: christine and john this is a corner in baltimore that has seen the violence in the recent days and weeks. this is in west baltimore at edmonton and west pulaski. this is certainly in last several weeks, they are trying to bring down the level of violence in the city. the word that the charges came down today is being treated as a victory on the corners in west baltimore. the first time that marlin mosby brought charges. the most serious of charges was second-degree murder. that is still there. six manslaughter charges, six assault charges, nine misconduct charges. the one difference is the false imprisonment charges has gone away. these officers were meant to be in the hearing next week. now the grand jury has spoken it moves it all into a different court. basically an end-round. her critics said she should recuse herself from the case. the motion filed in the lower court is null and void. they have to file again or take another way to take on marilyn mosby. christine and john. >> thank you, miguel. >>> a protest in olympia, washington angry
