miguel marques reporting for us.et's go to the cnn severe weather center and meteorologist jennifer gray. it looks awful, jennifer. you just saw miguel marques's report. give us an update of the latest forecast we are getting. >> it does and he's in one of the rain bands, not closest to the center where the stronger winds are. if you can believe it, people are experiencing stronger winds than he had. there are gusts of 85 miles per hour, it is only moving at three miles per hour at the 5:00 adviceor advisory. it slowed down even more, which is awful news for the people along the north carolina coast which is being battered by the flooding and the wind and the rain. this is going to continue this same trend of this on-shore flow, meaning all of the wind, the storm surge, the water pushing inland. that will continue, that flooding. luckily new bern has gotten out of the rain ban they've been in all day. if you were in certain parts of the city you are actually experiencing a little bit of relief but it is not over yet.

>> miguel almaguerr gon the coastline in north carolina. in wilmington but with a dryer gig is cal perry, who gets to drive around inside a vehicle. cal, this is not like normal weather where you can follow a thunderstorm on the radar app into your community. these bands kind of fall apart, regenerate. there is yellow ahead of red and then purple embedded in the red, but we can tell that where you are is coming under the influence of a pretty strong brand of precipitation. correct me if i'm wrong, was that the blue arc light of a transformer we just saw early on in your shot? >> reporter: yeah, it was. the transformers are starting to go in this area. as you said, unfortunately it is not an exact science in these hurricanes and you can kind of make a slight error of judgment, and we did about ten minutes ago. we went a little too far north. we are about, i would say, five or ten miles north of wilmington, sort of along the coastline. there's that intracoastal waterway which separates the sort of barrier islands, small beach towns from the r

miguel marquez in carolina beach, north carolina. we'll get back to him. thank you, miguel. now i want to bring in cnn's tom sater. he's in the cnn weather center. tom, good evening to you. you heard what the fema administrators -- what they say about hurricane florence not going to be a, quote, glancing blow. it's going to be a mike tyson punch to the carolina coast. give us the latest. >> well, even mike tyson got a little tired from time to time. it may not have been until round eight or nine, but he looked a little ragged at times, and that's what florence looks like. however he always came back with a couple of combinations, punches. when florence gets into the gulf stream, those warm waters, don't be surprised if florence gets a little power back and throws her own flurry of punches here because what we're watching looks like the eye is trying to collapse. i mean winds are at 115, don. if it gets down to 110, this is category 2. do not be fooled by this. this has got a lot -- she's got tricks up her sleeve. but the eye wall replacement, when you spin a top on a table,

all right, miguel, we're going check back in with you. thank you so much. let's go to martin savage in wilmington, north carolina. you saw the difference between where miguel is and where you are but this storm has proven deadly where you are. a mother and her infant child killed. what's the latest there? >> reporter: right. it has. well, this proves that this is why the authorities were taking the precautions to try to tell people, hey, don't go -- this is really a can i recakiller storm. wrightsville beach is just behind us here. this is where the storm mandatory evacuati made landfall 12 hours ago. the same conditions we were in 24 hours ago. so, if anything, just as miguel had pointed out, for our position here, even after landfall, the winds have gotten worse. the rain has only continued if not to increase. as for wrightsville beach, we can't get to it. that main causeway remains closed to any public. only first responders and emergency crews can go in. the initial assessment after the eye came ashore was they had made it through pretty good. how f how

miguel marquez, thank you very much. we now have a brand-new advisory on florence from the national hurricane center. cnn meteorologist allison chinchar is in the weather center. what are we learning? we know the storm is headed elsewhere and there are other people that ought to be aware. >> yes, we've got to pick up that forward speed to really get this moving out of these same areas. at this point it's not looking like it's not going to do that anytime soon. forward movement is only two miles per hour to the west. this system is basically crawling. the average human being can walk three to four miles per hour. you can essentially walk faster than this storm is moving. sustained winds have not changed. it's still 45 miles per hour gusting up to 60 miles per hour. likely power outages, trees c e coming down, that's still going to continue, because we have to bring the winds back down. the main concern is the flooding. not just the short term from the moisture that is falling but also the long term flooding potential. whe

miguel, how is it? how are you doing? >> yeah. very good. carolina beach is out of power.have had some flooding. for the most part, it's been small bits of damage. that we are in the eye of the storm. the one significant thing is that the wind, as chad mie mentioned, has changed direction. it had been blowing from the west and now it's changed directions and it started to pick up again. when that calm hit, my colleague was up all night long, they were recording 90 miles an hour gusts. it was knocking people over. i came out, fresh and a daisy, and there was literally zero wind. it was unbelievable. we had a long night last night. and then this morning in the eye, zero wind. now it is starting to pick up. the wind not blowing this way, but blowing this way from the ocean. so this is where they are concerned that that storm surge and a lot of that water will come up into the areas here and do even more flooding. nothing major right now. power is out. but so far everybody is okay. anderson? >> and just in terms of evacuations, i assume most people have left. >> most have. the

miguel, set the scene. >> reporter:peter, good morning. you know, they were preparing here for a flooding event. that certain could still happent really whay have gotten in the last day or so has been all of those massive trees. totally different disaster. we were here when the hurricane rce winds blown t in. therees are sprawled out across the community and blocking roads for first responders and taking down power lines for the crews working around the clock as you mentioned of nearly 1 million people without power. it is also some of those trees sliced through homes. we spoke to one woman yesterday whoas asleep on her couch and nearly killed by a tree. tree in , a downed wilmington did take the life of two people in another nearby home. that'soing to be an ongoing issue here ov. over the last 24ur ho we did not see power crews in the area. it is difficult for them to maneuver the streets. trees arelocking the streets. it wl take several days to clean them up. when they clean them up, they can restore power. that will take time. >> miguel
