miguel marquez is joining us not far from buffalo. miguel, what is happening on the ground? >> reporter: just a nightmare. buffalo is a city used to big storms. this is something they have never seen before. 27 people inn erie county new york dead from this storm and authorities are concerned going through homes and cars abandoned and start to clear the snow. massive amounts of snow they will find more people who are dead. the airport is shut down. they're not expected to open until wednesday. it is just an absolute disaster that officials there are only beginning to grapple with. the ability to clear the roads, this is a no drive zone in buffalo in many surrounding communities. thousands of people without power and the governors of new york say it is not over yet. >> the storm is coming back. we're expecting another six to 12 inches and in the south towns of southern part of erie county, a little south of here, they had 30 to 40 inches of snow overnight so anyone who declares victory and says it's over, it is way too early to say this is at its completion of maybe the sever

miguel marquez, thank you so much. joining us now, buffalo police commissioner joseph -- commissioner, you called this the worst storm you've ever seen in your life, tell us an update on the search, rescue and recovery efforts tonight. >> thank you for having me on, i lived here all my life, i lived through a lot of lake effect snow storms, blizzards, and this is something that we have never seen before. it absolutely devastated our community and the response has been very difficult. on friday, we worked diligently. our police officers with our plow operators, our front and voters to go out and do rescues have people stranded, but once friday night late into the night came, we were completely debilitated. we could not remove heavy plows. they are getting struck. you cannot move anywhere. it was complete could block for days. you cannot drive through this, it was a different kind of snow. once the snow started to subside a little bit, we were able to get our search and rescue teams and unfortunately recovery teams. we u

cnn's miguel marquez is in buffalo. and miguel, the city still has a driving ban in effect.t are you seeing on the ground there? >> reporter: yeah, we are seeing the very last bits of the snow. this is the last band to come across before the temperatures start to heat up a little bit. i want to show you downtown desolate buffalo right now. and it is desolate. lots of roads are plowed, but officials want to get into not only cars that are abandoned, but homes and other areas to figure out if anybody might still be out there that they have not found. they have concerned that that death toll may go higher. officials begging people for now to stay off the roads. >> 100 millionitary police are g brought in, as well as additional troops from the new york state police department, are coming in to manage traffic control, because it has become so evident that too many people are ignoring the ban. at the same time, they're trying to remove abandoned vehicles and people are trying to drive around in little honda civics or -- the report that came from my department of public works, the

florida, and so, miguel, minnesota is used to this, but that storm could be historic where you are. how much snow are we talking about? >> well, here in duluth, they are expecting 20 inches of snow and as of a few hours ago, and in about 35 hours, perhaps another 8" on top of that, and so it is going to be about 30" of snow when it is all said and done, and we are not expecting much more, but the concern is shifting to the roadways, and you can see the cars behind me buried, and that is what has made the roadways a mess up and down this region, and other parts of the midwest where there have been spinouts and rollovers and fatalities out there on the roadways and conditions are so slick and dangerous out there, and the concern right here is shifting to the cleanup, and the aftermath of the roadways and digging out, and that is going to take time, but the punch is not quite over yet, kate. >> and guad, this is the second time new orleans has been ripped apart this year by tornadoes. what are the cleanup and recovery efforts looking like at this point where you are? >> aaron, the stor
