nbc's miguel almaguer has more. >> reporter: investigators are growing more desperate. a week search teams have scoured the streets of bellevue, washington, where sky metalwala vanished, just as baffling is his mother's story and lack of frustration. she told detectives when her car ran out of gas she left sky behind asleep inside the unlocked car as she and her 4-year-old daughter went looking for help. she says when she returned an hour later, sky was gone. but investigators seized her car and said her story doesn't add up. >> we test drove it, the vehicle operated just fine. >> reporter: sky's mother is in the middle of divorcing sky's father, solomon metalwala, who is actively involved in sky's search, blamed his estranged wife even though police have not named her as a suspect. >> i do believe julia is responsible. if she can cooperate we can find where is our son. >> reporter: her lawyer tells nbc news she won't comment on the active investigation but the mother could now face criminal charges for leaving her son behind. >> that's certainly something we're conside

nbc's miguel almaguer has details. good morning. >> ann, good morning.e sharks migrate up and down the west coast but their numbers are considered relatively small and while attacks are rare, in just the last few days, two surfers nearly lost their lives. with bandages on his neck and arm, dr.s say eric tarantino is lucky to be alive. monday the surfer left a california hospital, just two days after he was attacked by what was believed to be a great white shark. in marina, beachgoers have been warned stay out of the water. the bite mark on tarantino's board measures 19 inches. >> i feel lucky and grateful right now. >> reporter: off the coast in oregon another close call. >> just glad to be alive. >> reporter: surfer bobby gumm was sitting on his board waiting for a wave when he suddenly found himself nose to nose with a great white. >> i'm just relaxing and all of a sudden something goes right under me. once i looked down i noticed it was a great white shark. >> reporter: within seconds, the shark attacked, knocking gumm off his board and into the water

nbc's miguel almaguer is there. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. just a few short hours ago this demonstration took a dramatic turn. police in riot gear moved into downtown oakland and shot tear gas at protesters after they took over an abandoned building and started a large bonfire in the downtown area. a number of arrests were made as police continued to have a very large presence in downtown. overnight thousands of occupy protesters shut down the port of oakland, entrances blocked, delivery trucks turned away, demonstrators successful in bringing the nation's fifth largest port to a standstill. >> enough people came out here and just stopped traffic that the port couldn't operate. >> reporter: oakland's day-long citywide strike wednesday may have been the largest demonstration here since the vietnam war. all day an estimated 7,000 poured through city streets. >> this is the beginnings of a revolution. >> reporter: the occupy movement a rally against what protesters call the unequal distribution of wealth and power. teachers marched with nurses.

we want to go live to oakland and miguel almaguer. what happened?aig, apparently there were 100 or so protesters in the downtown area. they were approached by police in riot gear because police officers say the protesters occupied an abandoned or foreclosed building downtown and setting dumpsters on fire. officers say for public safety they had to clear out the area they went in with riot gear and tear gas. several arrests were made. during that time, there were also some acts of vandalism that happened. this is a coffee shop in downtown oakland, that was near the heart of where the encampment is taking place. over my right hand shoulder, this is the occupy oakland plaza where protesters have been gathering and this is kind of the main focus where protesters have been gathering. last night as that protest was breaking out, this was among one of several businesses that was actually vandalized. you'll see this downtown square here in oakland was actually the center of a lot of activity. across the street you can see there's a rite-aid pharmacy and wor

miguel almaguer is live with the latest. >> reporter: good afternoon to you, it was a dramatic turn herey. there was a day long peaceful protest. some 7,000 people poured through oak lapd streets all day yesterday and it culminated with a large protest over at the port of oakland. it was shut down for several hours and just recently has reopened. after they shut down the port of oakland. many protesters, at least a dozen or so came back here to downtown oakland when police say they made a dramatic turn. a handful of protesters became violent according to police. police moved in with riot gear and said they had to throw in tear gas and flash grenades to dispurse a crowd and lighting dumpsters on fire. that led to other acts of vandalism. some of the local businesses here have had windows blown out and completely broken into hundreds of pieces. many of the protesters say this was no indicative of the message they were trying to send that their message has been peaceful. the occupy oakland camp has been here and they have no plans to go anywhere even though the city has already asked them t

nbc's miguel almaguer is in bellevue, washington weather details. miguel, good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning to you. here at the bellevue police department, detectives say the boy's mother, julia biryukova, is not a suspect or even a person of interest but that hasn't stopped investigators from poring through her personal life and checking her online search including for a so-called sugar daddy. 10 days after julia biryukova reported her little boy missing from a car she left on this road, police remain suspicious of her story. >> we're all aware of some of the inconsistencies from julia and that happened early on. >> reporter: she told police she left 2-year-old sky alone in the car november 6th after running out of gas, walked to this service station and returned to find sky missing. police test drove the car and say it wasn't out of gas and didn't have any mechanical problems. now the search for clues extends to biryukova's activity online. >> that is something that is certainly part of an investigation like this but i can't talk

nbc's miguel almaguer is in los angeles with details on this. hi, miguel. >> good morning.atalie wood's death was a high profile case 30 years ago, thrust back into the national spotlight last week when investigators said they would reopen the case. 30 years after natalie wood drowned, a potential witness tells nbc news she was interviewed tuesday by detectives for the first time, some three decades after woods' death was ruled an accident. marilyn wayne says her boat was 90 feet away from the "splendour" the night wood died. she spoke to cbs news. >> i heard a woman calling for help "help me, somebody please help me, i'm drowning. miguel almaguer is outside the hospital in palo alto, california, with more on the risky surgery that turned out to be a big success. miguel, good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning to you. doctors say the operation couldn't have gone any better. today both girls are doing well, they are by each other's side but they're no longer connected. the surgery lasted nearly ten hours, a complex high stakes procedure that separated conjoined twins angelina and angelica sabucco, the 2 years old connected at the chest and abdomen since birth. today they'll spend their first day apart. >> first of all i thank god for everything. this is a dream come true. >> reporter: fused together at the liver the team of 20 doctors and nurses knew the operation would be risky, massive bleeding, strokes and heart attacks were major concerns, but surgery for angelina and angelica was possible because each girl had her own heart, brain and kidneys. inside the e.r., lead surgeon gary hartmann said there were no major setbacks. >> long-term prognosis we would expect happy, healthy set of girls. we don'

nbc aye miguel almaguer is there. what's the latest from there? >> reporter: a few short hours ago this protest took a dramatic turn. dozens of police officers equipped with riot gear moved into downtown oakland, through tear gas and what they call flash grenades at dozens of protester who is had taken to the street and took over an abandoned building. they also were throwing flash grenades after a bomb fire was started. officers say they made several arrests. the number is unclear. there are reports of upwards of a hundred arrests in downtown oakland. a few hours ago we saw oakland streets had remained calm this morning after that incident. police were out here in big force. so were protesters. they were out here silently. at this hour we can tell you there's a cleanup under way in downtown oakland. all of this comes just after police had -- were concerned about protest eer taking over t port of oakland. they successfully did that close to midnight last night, shutting down the port of oakland, the nation's fifth largest port. after a day that wa
