miguel almaguer reports. >> reporter: the cyber attack was confirmed today by caesars the casino giant now saying hackers breached their firewalls and hijacked critical data that includes social security and drivers license numbers for customers who signed up for their loyalty program. our partners at cnbc reporting a criminal cyber group demanded a $30 million ransom last week before the casino paid roughly half of it why is that data so important? >> that data can be used by people that like to commit identity theft, to open new credit cards, to get drivers eye lens, to get social security cards, to open a mortgage. >> reporter: in an s.e.c. filing, caesars entertainment says, "we have taken steps to ensure that the stolen data is deleted by the unauthorized actor, although we cannot guarantee this result." the confirmed cyber attack, the first of two reported just days apart. earlier this week, just down the vegas strip at mgm, slot machines suddenly went down, guests waited for hours to check in, and atms were offline. the fbi is now investigating what many experts already believe.

nbc news national correspondent miguel almaguer joins us now.ned here and what is the boy's family saying. >> reporter: the family is shocked and they're also angry. they say after this incident happened, on the seconds day of school, they were initially told the 3-year-old was swatted in the back of head, and the couple of weeks later, the mother says the child protective services actually called her and showed her the video of what happened, and now she wants that school employee who was put on leave and resigned to face criminal charges for assault. i spoke to the child's moth area short time ago, the parents are very upset and they say they want action. here is what she said. >> when you watch that video now, what goes through your mind? it has been some time but it still must be difficult. >> right now, i just want justice for him. it has blown up more than i expected. so my hope is for change. and then when braylen is older, to be able to look back on this and to be proud of me of what i've done for him and the changes that i've made for h

miguel almaguer joins us now. you actually talked to the person who found this driver. tell you? >> reporter: well, first he said he couldn't believe he was hearing a cry for help. then he was shocked to see the crumpled truck at the bottom of a ravine. corey was dirt biking in the mountains a few miles outside los angeles in a remote back country area. he was able to climb down the hill and reach the 68-year-old victim. calvin smith was desperate for water, some shade and also help after spending nearly five days at the bottom of a ravine. first responders say he careened off a cliff and plummeted about 100 feet down. he was life-flighted to the hospital where he is making a recovery today. here's what corey told us a short time ago. >> i was thinking, there is probably no way anyone could live through that if there is someone down there. when i heard him yelling for help, i was really shocked. >> this was all an incredible rescue and a miracle on the mountain. that gentleman is a father of ten and a grandfather to 44, guys. >> i'm sure they're all so happy that he is

nbc news national correspondent miguel almaguer has more. >> reporter: overnight philadelphia road --cations including a footlocker and apple store as well as a lululemon. these kinds of smash and grab crimes have become all too common. forcing a growing number of retailers to try to combat the thefts. this morning, target is taking action to reduce retail crime. the company announcing it will shut down nine stores by the end of october. three in san francisco and portland, two in seattle and one in new york. the company blaming the closures on theft. this threatens the safety of our team and guests, says target. >> this is crazy. they are locking up the toothpaste. since wendy my local target lock every. target says "despite our efforts we continue to face fundamental challenges to operating the stores." target is not alone. in 2021 walgreens closed five locations in san francisco over shoplifting and while walmart and nordstrom have close major locations either blamed crime. still, in a newly released survey conducted by the national retail federation, 80% of responding retailers sa
