miguel marquez is live in the crowd now. miguel, what are you hearing? what's going on here? >> reporter: i don't know how much longer we're going to be able to stay in this position. i want to give you a quick scene set. this is the state's patrol over here. they're coming up from the south side of the brooklyn center police department. you can see the crowd here. they're trying to stay here, trying to show defiance in the name of daunte wright and challenging police. many of them with umbrellas to keep the spray away from them. they're spraying lots of pepper spray at them. this is the police station here. these are national guardsmen on this side, sheriff's department here. this is a sheriff's department vehicle that just pulled up to the very front gates of the police department. bottles, lots of bottles, water bottles being thrown at police and fireworks being shot at police as well. there's also fireworks that have been lit off in the area here. but this is the standoff now. police have formed a corden along the entire street here and they are moving toward the north to

i want to get to cnn's miguel marquez also out in brooklyn center, minnesota, right now. take us to where you are, what you're seeing. >> reporter: yeah. we're seeing much the same scene basically. there's been a long period now where police have formed a line. they have those bright lights to sort of disorient the crowd so they can't really see what they're doing. on the right side of the line, you can see they've moved more vehicles in on that side. there was a yard off on the right side of their line that they wanted to check out. but right now you have several cars still on the street here, which i think is giving them some pause about moving too quickly up this direction. it does appear, though, that very soon they will. they have been making increased announcements that this is an unlawful assembly, that if they continue to stay here, they will be arrested, and even talking to the media, they're saying move off and do it now. they're getting more emphatic basically in the language that they're using. the snow amazingly enough is starting to come down harder, and the

miguel marquez is there. what are you seeing right now, miguel? >> reporter: yeah, it very much does look like it's going to be a fifth night of protests. people are out here rallying in support of daunte wright. they certainly want to see justice for him and changes to the police force as well and to the way policing is done. they are handing out umbrellas. they're handing out eye protection. they are clearly preparing for a night of making a very emphatic point to the police of the changes they want to see to the entire system. the police for their side have put in extra barriers and fencing all the way up and down the station itself and even on some of the side streets here. so both sides sort of getting ready for another night here. but i got to tell you the police have gotten much better at moving in very quickly when curfews go into effect, breaking up the protests and moving people out. anderson? >> is there a curfew in place tonight as there has been over the past couple of days? >> reporter: there is for brooklyn center. it's been a littl

anderson. >> miguel marquez, appreciate it.. >>> back with us as well now, cnn senior legal on list, laura coates. laura, you do you have any sens how the course of this, and how will -- tough or easy would it be for prosecutors to deliver that verdict for the wright family? >> well, you know, the definition of justice, unfortunately, for so many victims families in this country, is not what the laws can provide. especially when it comes to sentencing. but having said that, even without the universal definition of justice, anderson, there are -- there is a charge, now, against this officer. and as i have said, before, because of the pace of this actual charge. it could mean this is only the initial charge. i remind people that another officer in the minneapolis area, just a couple years ago, mohammed noor was also charged with second-degree manslaughter but they also had a third-degree murder charge attached to it. based on the same-factual predicate of this unreasonable risk that was taken. and the unreasonable risk here is wh

let's go back to miguel marquez. miguel, what's happening? >> yeah.he picture that you are looking at now is, sort of, the front gate to the police station here. and you can see, how the protestors have sort of -- some of them -- most of the protestors are listening to speeches and a rally, not just too far away. but many of them have sort of crowded up to this front gate. sort of, the weak spot. that's why they have this big-military vehicle there. this is the sheriff's office. the hennepin county sheriff's office. you know, the way that they cleared protestors last night has only, in some ways, angered them more. about 60 individuals were -- were rolled up and arrested last night. many of them, are still in jail today. the -- the -- the sheriff's personnel, in full-riot gear, have now moved up to that gate. and this is, very much, how it started last night. this is earlier than it started last night. but this is, very much, the same way that it started last night. with this particular area, being the focus of protestors' ire and anger. and then, the

want to go next to cnn's miguel marquez, who is with the marchers. miguel, talk about where you are and what you have been seeing. >> reporter: so, we are downtown minneapolis. since that verdict was handed over, the -- or the -- the jurors got the opportunity to start debating that verdict, this crowd has started to gather. it's now several hundred, if not a thousand, strong. so i want to give you a sense of what it looks like and sounds like right now. they have been not only chanting but lots of speeches, and sort of a rallying cry by many people who have been affected by police violence, all afternoon. calling for equal justice. i was going to point out right here. i mean, check this out. we are right next to a government center, here, and the fence is -- this is all razor wire. they have put barricades in here. and this is what many of the government buildings look like down here. many of the private buildings are boarded up, as though they're expecting a hurricane to come to town. and lot of the protestors, we speak to, say that, look. this is a

miguel marquez joins us from brooklyn center. what is your reaction to the charge against former officer potter? >> reporter: there is relief, certainly, she's been charged and been charged so quickly. the fact that she resigned, that the police chief resigned and that these charges have come have all been met with elation by the crowd that gathered here for a fourth night but they is also say it not enough. they want not only her charged with greater crimes essentially, murder charges is what they'd like to see but they want all those everyday transactions between african-americans, people of color and police to seize. this case like the george floyd case before like so many before that has just become a rallying cry for people to show up here night after night after night. anderson? >> and are more protests expected tonight? >> reporter: i want to show you a little bit what is going on. there are. there are more protests expected tonight. it a bit of a rally, a bit of an organizational event. they are making speeches. there is

miguel marquez is in minneapolis for us. good evening to you, this trial is now in the hands of the jury, there were some demonstrators, what's the feeling there as we wait for this verdict? >> reporter: yeah, there is a lot of uncertainty and a lot of anger and a lot fear and anxiety of what's going to happen with this verdict. the security apparatus here. this is the government center where the jurors are deliberating. you can see 12, 15-foot fences. when daunte wright called his mother, he was pulled over for the air fresheners. the state brought in thousands of national guards to take around the state. and the schools will be on virtual learning starting on wednesday. the other concern is daunte wright's funeral is scheduled on thursday. there is a lot in the mix here tc. the jurors will be back in the morning at 10:00 a.m., they deliberated for about four hours today. several hundred people marched downtown minneapolis, their promise tonight they'll be back tomorrow. than >> thank you, miguel marquez. >>> the former pre

miguel marquez is here with us. you were just covering at the brooklyn center and now you are here and eight people killed and now we have the identity of the gunman. what do you know? >> reporter: brandon hole, 19-years-old, we he worked at t facility and we know he was on police radar, his mother called police here in indianapolis, she was afraid he was trying to commit suicide by cop. police went over and checked it all out and they took a shotgun from him. something they saw in the bedroom that led him to call the fbi to check it out to see if there is any sort of extremist behavior. the fbi interviewed him april of 2020 and said there is no indication of extremist behavior or religious or terrorism so they closed the case. they did not give that shotgun back. it raised a quthe question of h this individual got the shotgun and killing people here and why? why did he do it? >> what do we know of the victims? >> some people who worked here. the oldest was 74. there were two 19-years-old among the victims. sons and

cnn national correspondent miguel marquez joining us from minnesota. miguel, tell us the next steps for chauvin. >> reporter: eight weeks, that's what the judge says for convicted murderer derek chauvin. that new mugshot after he was booked after being seen led away in handcuffs, watching as the judge read verdict after verdict after verdict, all guilty. in eight weeks the judge will begin a sentencing hearing. before that there there be a presentencing hearing. he doesn't have any pryors, so that will certainly weigh into this. the prosecution asked for aggravating circumstances that could add time to this. as you said, the longest term would be 40 years. if he's sentenced on all three, they would likely be served concurrently, not consecutively, so it would be all at the same time for the same instance. those aggravating circumstances, like there was a young girl present. the way chauvin acted without any regard for mr. floyd, that mr. floyd was in a difficult place. his brother -- george floyd's brother reacted to what this conviction means going for

cnn's miguel marquez is in indianapolis with the latest. el, we just confirmed over the last few hours that the apparent suspect was a former employee. >> reporter: he was, indeed. he left employment here at this fedex facility. it's a massive facility, one of the largest that fedex has in the world last year some time. we also know that this individual 19 years old was on police radar last year, in march of 2020, his mother called police here in indianapolis to report that she was afraid her son was going to try to commit suicide by cop. police responded to the home. they checked out. they took a shotgun that belonged to the 19-year-old. and then something else they saw in the home led them to call the fbi, because they were concerned about, perhaps, some sort of extremist behavior that he may have. so the fbi interviewed him a month later. they closed the case, but they kept the gun, so it will raise questions about what gun he had here. how did he obtain it. and, of course, the motive. why. why would he come back to the place where he wor

cnn's miguel marquez has more now from the twin cities. >> reporter: so at about the time the jurors the case in the -- the case against derek chauvin there was a gathering of protesters that grew. i want to show you what's happening down here now. this is downtown minneapolis, i want to let you listen a little bit. people have gathered for several hours, they have marched through the streets demanding equality of justice not just with regard to george floyd and the derek chauvin case, but for americans and people of color everywhere in their dealings with police. they've stopped at that particular place because this barricaded, razor wired building here, this is the new third precinct for minneapolis. this is the precinct where derek chauvin was placed out of -- this is the precinct that protesters in south minneapolis took over and then burned and they've now moved it up to this area in downtown minneapolis but the state has brought in thousands of national guardsmen, thousands of law enforcement some from outside the area, schools will go to virtual starting on wednesday ahead of
