cnn's miguel marquez is in one romanian city that is having to really scale up its services. >> reporter: who are all these people? friends, fellow citizens, and colleagues, she says. family, too. all from donbas in eastern ukraine. refugees after the war there in 2014. refugees again. some people cross the border on foot, she says. two borders. not everyone is lucky as this 86-year-old who had arrived. she survived world war ii. now, she is in an apartment in central romania with her daughter and lots of friends and her cat. my childhood was spent during the war, she says. now, in my old age, there is war again and for what? in the name of all people, god, please stop the war. the medieval city of brasov, not far from dracula's castle, is preparing a thousand beds for ukrainian refugees. those beds in a hotel, in its historic center, a business development center, and a brand new apartment building in the new part of town. >> the main challenge is how to scale it up because this is only the first wave of refugees. >> reporter: olga from odesa is here with her two daughters. how do you f

miguel marquez introduces us to one woman in bucharest, romania, trying to ease the plight of those escapingr: there are many normal everyday romanians who have stepped up to the call. we are in a house south of bucharest, they have taken in right now they have 31 people living here. i just want to give you, a good example of how many people. these are the shoes for some -- most of the people that are here. many of them are out doing other things right now. they have cared for about 61 people, in all, over the last two weeks. they have three more refugees coming tonight. and it's alina bravo who is a sort of an organizer here in bucharest. you are doing this. what -- tell us what we're -- this is the -- the entryway to this house. the coats, all these donations. what are we looking at here? >> you are looking at our house that my husband and i decided to sell last year. we moved to bucharest to be close tore the kindergarten. and it was empty and when everything started in ukraine, we said why don't we use the house that's empty to host people during this crisis? >> so now, you have 31 peopl

>> miguel marquez, glad you're there in bucharest. >>> coming up next to some people who did not leavet leave they lived in a village outside kyiv, miles away from the nearest military target. they didn't matter. cnn's alex maryaquardt has more. >> reporter: the small country road is lined by rubble, burned out cars and a deep crater where the russian missile struck. the attack caught on a village security camera hit the home of igor in a small village about 15 miles south of kyiv where he lived with his family. now they're gone, killed in an instant. five family members and a friend including his 12-year-old daughter who was disabled in an accident with a drunk driver. his wife just 46 years old, and his son-in-law, the father of his grandchildren. today, black eye and face bruised picked through the debris trying to find belongings and documents. there was a brief moment of happiness when he found one of his missing cats. but the reality of how his life is forever changed has not yet sunk in. >> reporter: there is simply no explanation for all of this destruction, for the deaths that

wolf. >> miguel, miguel marquez in bucharest for us. miguel, thank you very much. southern ukrainian port city of odesa. cnn international security editor nick paton walsh is, of course, on the scene for us. nick, a russian warship actually fired over the skies of odesa we're told. how are the people there preparing for a russian assault? >> reporter: yeah, obviously we have seen intense barricading here over the past weeks. and i have to say when roughly we think that ship fired those shots, which local ukrainian security officials think was about trying to see how the air defenses here would react. we were standing in the street. it was littered with tank traps, extraordinary iron girdles basically being welded together. and that is across the whole of this city. so central tourist district, deserted, covered in sandbags. and so, i think that moment certainly left people more anxious than we've seen in past days that we may be seeing sort of russian probing of the defenses of this key port that russia really has to have influence over if it wants to influence ukr

some families waiting in a bucharest shelter spoke with cnn's miguel marquez about their struggles. >> reporter: lud milla, her two teen daughters, and her father arrived last night. "our beautiful parks, our beautiful square," she says. "everything is ruined." from kharkiv, a city punished by artillery and rocketed, a schoolteacher has some savings and not much. they're three-day journey brought them to this shelter run by the city of bucharest. "i'm shocked war is possible in 2022," she says. "everything was good. i could walk with my friends. i love my home city. it was very difficult to leave." sofia's sister says it's hard to believe their lives have been thrown into such enormous uncertainty. >> i really miss my house, my country, my city, and i hope that this war is going to finish. >> reporter: andre, a furniture maker, had his own business. he's here with his wife, kids, in all a family of eight and their chihuahua, bruno. do you know when you will go home? >> good question. >> reporter: a friend sent video of what their home now looks like. this is your home. >> that is my h

cnn's miguel marquez is live at an entry noint romania across the river from ukraine. ad a large ferry come across the river with hundreds of refugees from ukraine. it is incredibly organized here in romania right now. they've gotten very good at this in the last couple weeks. you see people way down there, they're coming off that ferry. they've been processed down there so their paperwork can be done. it's a pretty easy way to move into the country or into other countries. literally the person with the reflective vest is a volunteer helping each family come through, carrying their luggage. this is what most people have. they have -- it's the mom with a bag, a child, maybe two children and a rolling bag, and that is about it. we saw some people with dogs. one woman had a dog and two cats. then they figure out here where they are going to so they can move them into either different tents or they have buses available wherever they're going. over this way they have everything. you can get a hot dog over here, hot meals behind here, and all this stuff that a family might ne

miguel marquez right there in bucharest, the capital city of romania.bers to grow and they're trying to prepare for it. at this station, center station in bucharest, refugees from across the border, about 12 different border crossings come in here and they move across here into other areas of europe. i want to show you how this is working here. they have ambulances here, they have everything that they need for refugees. they've set up several temporary refugee centers so when they arrive here, this fast food restaurant has now turned into -- it's jam packed. there are two other areas in this train station, all these people with reflective vests are helping ukrainians as they arrive here. the romanian government is getting them free transit, free train fare to the border with other countries so they can keep moving on. but it's extremely difficult. it takes days sometimes. the man heading up the entire effort to get refugees in and out of romania says this situation was unimaginable just a couple of weeks ago. >> we see children, a lot of children. we se

cnn's miguel marquez is in romania where thousands and thousands of refugees are pouring in. ugees telling you? >> reporter: well, look, that, one, they expect to return home. then when you ask, when do you think that will be? they say, well, maybe two weeks, four weeks, a month, two months. the uncertainty of these people's lives is unbelievable. but for all the horror of what is happening in ukraine, the goodness of what is happening here in romania and across many countries in europe is astounding to see. we visited the house of a romanian family that has taken in right now 31 people while we were there. three more are arriving later tonight. in all over the last two weeks, they've taken in 61 refugees. it takes a small army on their own part just to keep them okay. we spoke to a mother and a daughter about what it's like to have gone from a normal life just a few weeks ago in a european city to being a refugee. >> i never thought i would be here in other country with my whole family because my dad, my sister, my aunt's husband now in ukraine, so it's really stressful. >> w

miguel marquez, in bucharest many people are still arriving. you've been there for days.t's the situation like today? >> reporter: look, we have seen this train station, the main station here in bucharest, acco accordion. it fills up quickly and then the romanians have gotten very, very good at moving people on. most ukrainians who are coming move on to poland, hungary, across other countries in western europe. the eu, the european union, is making it a lot easier for romanians to do that everything from paperwork to trains to transportation. i have to say it is impressive. the first few days we were here it was chaotic. there was a lot of people. it was very, very cold. people weren't sure where to go. now they have tons of they have lots of areas people can go and have opened up some 6,500 spaces for temporary housing for people. they are getting through it. it is difficult. about 85,000 ukrainians still in romania. they may be here for a very long time but romania says they've never felt closer to the nato, to the u.s. they feel they are being supported and so far they

cnn's miguel marquez is live in romania with a family hosting nearly three dozen ukrainian refugees. ng, it is sad, it is heartening as well. we're in a bedroom actually with some of those refugees. this is our translator but the folks we want to speak to are alana, her mother and aunt who have come here from kharkiv. a town, a city hit very hard. you're 14 years old. three weeks ago, you were in school. you want to be a doctor. what is life like right now? >> it's really terrifying, and it took us five days to leave our house, to leave our, my dad, our family, my school, my dancing team, and it's really hard to us because our family is in kharkiv now. >> reporter: your father and other family members in kharkiv and cat, most importantly, in kharkiv as well, your neighbors are caring for the cat, uba, i think is the name. and how stressful is it? what will you do now? how long will you be here? ther where will you go? >> for four days here and it's good and everyone is taking care of us. we felt really, it's. >> reporter: you feel supported. >> really supported. >> reporter: if vladim

miguel marquez is outfront in romania. miguel, you were at the train station all day.reporter: that what is a flood of refugees right now, erin, will soon become a tidal wave and the clock is ticking. train stations like here, trains have been coming and going all day bringing refugees in some cases, taking them away in others. it is going to get more and more serious as those russian forces move across -- toward the west in ukraine. this is sort of the situation now. it's about 3:00 in the morning, but they have set up several refugee centers here in the train station itself. these orange tents that you see down the way here, these are all for families, for nursing mothers, for women who are traveling with children. it's a place where they can rest, get a little bit of quiet. there are several other rooms. they have even turned a fast food restaurant into a makeshift refugee center as well. the guy who runs the entire refugee effort for the country says they have never seen anything like this. >> children, a lot of children. we see children coming only with their moth
