cnn's miguel marquez joins us live from charlottesville.re do you know about jones and the possible motive? >> reporter: motive is tough. we do know they were all football players, at least at one point. it doesn't appear he played any games. the three who were shot and killed were all on the football team. the the two others, one in good condition, the other in critical condition, it's not clear they were on the football team, but everybody we talked to said they, too, were on the football team. we know jones came to day tension of authorities at uva in the last several months. they were doing a threat assessment of him. during that threat assessment there was a cob sealed weapons charge against him and then or told police that jones had said he had a gun . it's forbidden to have a gun on the campus. there was a hazing incident he was involved in. it was never really defined. the concealed weapons charge in 2021, it's not clear they found anything other than there was a charge that he never disclosed it. that alone would have probably gott

. >> cnn's miguel marquez joins us from charlottesville. what more do we know about that suspect? >> gosh. one, he was a student here. the three dead were students here. the two injured here were students here. the three dead were all junior, all on the football team at uva. i want to show you what's happening here right now. the bus that they were all on, where it sounds like all of this took place, they're getting ready to move it. the state police had a vehicle in there, they were going through all the forensic material in there. now they have that bus hooked up to a tow truck, and they are going to move it. we know that christopher jones, 22 years old, was picked up about 75 miles from here near richmond, virginia, by police there without incident, about 13 hours after all this started. witnesses tell us that they heard people who were close to that bus last night around 10:30, 10:15 or so, said they heard gunshots on the bus and everybody exiting that bus. it was coming back -- they were watching a play in washington, d.c. they were coming back in the campus, 10:30 p.m. on a

. >>> next to cnn's miguel marquez.we're learning about absentee ballots there that republicans have called into question. >> reporter: there was a lawsuit by a republican running for secretary of state here. a judge issuing a scathing denial of their request to stop absentee ballots here in detroit, just detroit, from being cast. they called into question those ballots that had been requested by mail so had to be either requested in person or vote in person. i can show you even now after 4:00 at the department of elections all these cars are waiting to drop off absentee ballots in this ballot box here. they were collecting them earlier when they were open and even the people you see here are now waiting to either try to vote or to try to register to vote here in detroit. very, very high voter turnout. that's a judge saying that lawsuit was basically a false flag and wouldn't stand for it, saying it would have invalidated tens of thousands of votes here in detroit. >> miguel, thank you. i want to bring in sa sara sidner

i'm joined by our senior national correspondent miguel marquez.cerns when talking about this possibly taking 24 hours? >> yeah, the concern is and the problem we saw in 2020 and it still exists now, you have a lot of absentee votes and it takes longer to count those because they have to process them and can't start doing that until election day for the most part across the state and day of votes come in much more quickly. all that said it does take clerks some time to get them to the counties where they get their first reporting, first unofficial reporting but there will be a time period just after the polls close at 8:00 p.m. eastern here in detroit or across michigan where you will have possibly lots of more rural smaller counties reporting very rapidly all those day of votes and the attorney general here who stopped by this polling place a short time ago says that she is concerned that republicans at the top of the ticket, the governor, the secretary of state and the attorney general that they may use that as a pretext to claim victory. listen.

miguel marquez is live in a polling place in detroit. how is it, miguel?n detroit and it is busy at them as well. they've had a ton of absentee votes. over 2 million absentee votes requested across the state. about 1.7 million returned. they expect that will go up and that is the real issue for detroit and across state, counting the absentee votes because they can't start processing them and counting them until today. so all of that process is happening at different boards around the state. we're here with one voter who has just voted. shanika courtney. you just voted. er you vote every election. did you feel more motivated this time to vote? >> i did feel more vmotivated because i knew who i was voting for and what i was voting for. >> there has been a concern about sort of a lack of attention, a lack of concern, a lack of sort of motivation in detroit. what are your friends telling you, what are your family, do you sense that people are engaged in this election. >> i think more people are coming out to vote now within the last few years. i think that als
