what else have we learned, mik, in those last four months? >> reporter: the last four months of the war, actually. he was one of the truck drivers who drove the last of the u.s. military forces and equipment out of iraq, during the withdraw. according to army secretary john mchugh, there's no indication he served in any combat operation, combat role, no injuries. he has no combat decorations on his record. so there's no indication that he was under any particular combat stress anyway, while in iraq. now, the psychiatrist who met him, met with him just last month, he was being treated for anxiety, depression, sleep deprivation. he reported that there was no sign that, just last month, that he was prone to any likely violence, or that he had any suicidal ideations at that time. so clearly, he had some kind of mental problem for him to do what he did yesterday, but it was not clearly evident to the psychiatrist that he was seeing there at the base. >> so, mik -- >> over that short period of time he was there. >> what is the protocol? you pointed

mik, now that we've seen the service record, you tell me. there's been some questions, like barry mccaffrey on yesterday, who seemed to say, boy, that soldier's been in there a long time, and he's not been promoted very often. that's a sign to him that maybe this guy wasn't a very good soldier. what say you? >> well, defense officials actually describe this lopez -- specialist lopez, as an underachiever. and throughout his 15-year career in the military, he really didn't draw much attention one way or the other. he had a clean record, so there were no black marks against his record. in other words, he wasn't a problem soldier. it's just that he was not a very high achiever. and in terms of the idea and the people we're talking to the idea that this one event that he couldn't stay long enough for his mother's funeral, that may have been a trigger. but he obviously had much deeper problems, because he complained of anxiety, sleep deprivation, and depression, so he was getting treatment for that. so there's a much bigger question here about wha
