mik, what happened? >> reporter: well, u.s.ces tell nbc news that an american soldier was killed. there may be other american casualties, some wounded but we don't have confirmation on that yet. this was a multi-facetted commission that was launched by not only the u.s. but kurdish forces on the ground. it was aimed at a prison where as many as 70 kurdish fighters were being held by -- american aircraft above were launching air strikes around the area to keep other isis fighters from reentering that battlefield to take on the kurds. according to officials this was a request by either the iraqi government or the kurds themselves because the u.s. really is the only member of the coalition there fighting isis in iraq and syria that has the capability to pull off that kind of mission. this is the first time an american rescue mission of that kind has been launched in iraq. there was one launched in syria and another special ops in syria that killed an isis commando. according to u.s. officials, except for the casualties, the operat
