joining me now is mika brzezinski. >> i've been working on this for years and excited that we're launching about the tour and what your goals are. you've been working on this -- you wrote the book but taking it the next step. >> what i found when i wrote the book i thought i was just sharing a few maybe concerns that i had that maybe some other women had as well. what i found was some of the issues that we confront in our own minds before we even get to the negotiating table, they are universal concerns universal challenges. i think women tend to apologize their way into conversations and self-depry indicate it's amazing how fierce we are with our jobs advocating for a deal we want to cut or story we want to tell or protecting our company's bottom line or our husband's or children. when it comes to advocating for money for ourselves, somehow we lose our voices. we become terrified and we feel like it's untoward almost or inappropriate and that is sort of the veil i want to lift off. i made all of those mistakes every time when i was trying to rectify my salary situation. and i documented a

this is a conversation we have a lot here at msnbc with mika brzezinski, she's leading a tour calledng how women around the country can overcome these hurdles. i started by asking what she thought of the speech. >> i thought it was a beautiful night. a lot of people came to the stage and touched on some really important issues that are afflicting our society, but that, i will say, i jumped up out of bed, i was like meryl streep going, yes exactly! hollywood is the perfect example of how bad this problem is. we've seen it revealed in e-mails that probably we shouldn't have seen but i'm glad we have. because the gap in what women are paid to their male counterparts, it's obscene and i think shee took the opportunity to use the platform of the oscars to talk about something that affects women across america and we need to deal with now. >> so there's a couple of interesting stats here in this year's nominations, according to the women's media center men outnumbered women, five to one in nonaking nominations and in seven categories no women nominated. are the times not getting better eve
