also with us is mike allen and "the washington post" anne cornblue. ate with all voters going into 2010 and 2012? >> the value voters who came to the summit this weekend in washington made it clear they are concerned about some of the issues all conservatives across the country are conserved about. i think this built on the momentum from the congressional town halls in august. >> let's define some of those issues. again, i'm new to this so it could be my own lenk curve but i have a hard time finding anybody on the conservative or liberal side of the political spectrum in favor of fair play and real competition. i see a lot of manipulation and spitball fighting and a lot of guilt from the left and i don't see anybody looking out for the taxpayer or trying to solve problems based on the establishment of fair play and transparency and accountability and choice. do those values resonate with your voters? >> well, certainly. but there are crucial moral issues our voters are concerned about like the issue of abortion and i think they've been motivated by the

politico's mike allen joins us from washington. >> good morning. >> we've seen the president speak to congress. he is taking his message to minneapolis to the masses to begin. what can we expect from the president in terms of style and substance? >> well, this is going to be the fired-up, ready to go barack obama that we saw on the campaign trail. they have an expression around the west wing, which is no one ever got rich betting against barack obama and we're starting to see why. if you had just read the words on the page of the president's address to congress yesterday, especially liberals in the house might have said, hey, this is a pretty week for us, but there was an emotional room that has democrats working hard. he'll be at the target center in minneapolis. later this week, he's going to continue his health care tour in this area at college park, home of the university of maryland terps. >> and speaking to what you just said about this new united feeling among democrats when it comes to health care reform, there were very few new details in the president's plan or in his speech

mike allen has a look at the morning playbook. ike. >> i'll try not to have outburst while you're talking. >> you lie, mike allen. we've been analyzing the speech a little bit. what happened last night. let's talk about where we go from here. what does the white house do off that speech now to get health care done? >> they see this as a second lease on life and they'll take it. they see it as a political campaign. last night the president's former campaign manager who has a book coming out on the anniversary of the election coming up in november had a big conference call with volunteers throughout the country. he said if health care doesn't get done this year, it will be a decade or a generation before they have another chance. so the idea is to instill urgency. you'll see the president if he looked like he was in campaign mode on monday in cincinnati, wait until you see him saturday in minneapolis. they're going to have a big rally there. no tickets. it's come one, come all. >> mike, talk a little bit about who the president was s

here with us now, politico's morning playbook, chief political correspondent mike allen. e. >> happy friday, willie. >> happy friday to you. let's talk a little bit about general mcchrystal, the top commander for us over in afghanistan. we're getting a little preview of his "60 minutes" interview where he's basically asked are things worse or better than you expected, were they worse or better than when you arrived in afghanistan? he said, frankly, they're worse. tell us more about that, mike. >> willie, i'm going to translate that. this is very difficult to say. what the general is telling david martin in that interview is even if we went in with all the fire power in the world, we would not win. it's a very tough message. but all of the evidence from the ground shows that. this bolsters the case that general mcchrystal made in that report that was linked to bob woodward for counterinsurgency strategy. what this means is we can't just keep clobbering the bad guys. we need to make the country safe for local people and work with the population to defeat the insurgency. they
