with us the white house correspondent for politico, mike allen. mike, good morning. >> happy friday. >> we're off and running on the weekend. let's talk about your piece today on politico at the republican convention, the high rollers. big money getting up close and personal with some of the big names there. what are we talking about here? >> yeah. willie, this is the convention behind the convention. the one that's totally off camera, for the big donors, big bundlers, the givers to the outside groups that are really fueling this election cycle. they're going to have their own events, their own lounges, their own briefings, from some of the big speakers at the convention, so a number of the speakers who will be at the podium and other stars of the party will be then separately briefing these big givers. if you gave -- or raised $250,000 or more for mitt romney, they call them the stars, two waterfront hotels where you'll have your own suites and willie, i know you're going to be extremely jealous of this, but they get their own performance by the o

politico has an interesting analysis piece by john harris and mike allen, and this is part of it i want to put on the screen for you. "it's hard to overstate the risks romney is taking in making a choice that virtually guarantees a far-reaching debate about the broader role of the government and the entitlement state. simply put, it's a debate republicans have almost never won when they've put it directly before voters in the past. as gingrich learned when he squared off with bill clinton in the 1990s and president bush learned with his politically disastrous effort at social security reform in the second term, voters may despise spending and deficits in the abstract but they like many of these programs in particular." and what i'm getting at, governor, is that what you and others support so strongly about chairman ryan is that he's taken tough stands on big issues like the budget, federal spending, role of government, and medicare, the program for seniors. it would all change under his vision. is that politically risky to a point that could actually imperil the romney candidacy? >> wel

jenna: i read a note by mike allen in politico, that when he sat down with governor romney, that he wassn't feeling good. >> i understand he's doing very, very well. he's got even some rest here. he'll be ready for thursday night. jenna: one thing we are watching for today is the official opening of the convention, the gavel to open everything up. what we expect to see is a big debt clock that will be center stage. we shared with our view thaers some oviewers that some of our taxpayer money is being used, tense of millions of dollars. if cutting spending is something the g.o.p. and mitt romney is going to be talking about. why take any taxpayer money at all? >> i don't know why that decision was made. i'm not privileged to the information behind that. i know that money is available for all parties in order to make certain that we do have these events. i'll tell you what the importance of the convention itself is, is that we have an ability, in these couple days, to reach the american people directly, unfiltered to let them know really what their choices are in november. here we have an

he's interviewed by mike allen.s is about an hour. >> you planned president bush's re-election in 2004. what do you think changed after mitt romney's convention? what do you think is true now that you can say this convention is a success? >> this is president obama's re-election campaign coming up. in a way this is more like 2000 for mitt romney. as we saw today in the abc/"the washington post" poll, we have been in this process for some time. particularly those people in this room following following it closely like junkies, we have all the problems of addicts. we think everybody shares our experience. but the people are going to make up the final traunch of voters really don't know as much about mitt romney as they know about barack obama. so the key thing is for mitt romney at the end of this convention, i know something about him personally that i didn't know about him beforehand. there is more we know about these kets, particularly obama about the issue side of it, that we might expect. but the personal side of

turn to politico with mike allen with a look at the playbook. >> good morning. >> we've been talking republican convention this morning. let's talk about the democrats. their list of speakers out this morning and looks like some very prominent women will be the charlotte. >> well, sure does. they're not missing this chance. this morning the democratic convention released a list of ten speakers. how many women on this list of speakers? all ten. and many familiar names, caroline kennedy, eva longoria of "desperate housewives" a big obama organizer, tammy duckworth, tammy baldwin, lily ledbetter, the equal pay law is named. a clear message here coming from the democratic national committee at the same time i have a chilling headline if you're a republican. behind the scenes, there have been this coordinated effort by boston and washington to push todd akin out of the race. people in boston and washington think that is failed. paul ryan personally called to try to push him out. so they now think that akin's going to be in for a while, in to at least the republican convention, meaning thi
