. >>> joining us now, chief white house correspondent from "politico," mike allen.ur overall take on the aftermath of yesterday? >> first off, where's my bloody? they offered me starbucks. >> you want a bloody mary? extra vodka in his, please. president obama saying what he's wanted to say for ten years. the president unleashed unabashed, unrestrained knowing that he has the high ground. republicans, very dispirited yesterday. they realize that any leverage they thought they had with this president going into the next couple weeks evaporated. they saw how strong he was, how aggressive he was and to be pushing this agenda. and none of the rounding of the edges that we've seen ever since 1994 when we saw him on the stage talking about bipartisanship. there was none of that. instead another term that was the first in a presidential inaugural address is collective action. when have we heard a president talk about that? never. >> let's start with some of the reactions. obviously widely mixed throughout this country. many said it was the most progressive speech he's given

she points out in her comments to mike allen and jim vaned high, i don't play golf. i don't play basketball. i don't really play cards. i don't think anybody questions whether i have a role to play here. it's irrelevant whether the president wants to do that in some of his free time. what's really important is when we have something to say, does he listen to, you and he does. valerie jarrett. of course, she occupies a unique space with both obamas. arguably, whether or not she plays cards or basketball or golf doesn't really speak to the issue of whether or not the president spends a lot of time with the guys in the white house and whether there are enough women in high ranking positions other than valerie jarrett. >> well, a couple of things, andrea. first, i was a high ranking official in the white house for many years, and i don't play golf. i do play cards. i wasn't looking to spend my personal time with the president. i was looking to work for him and to affect change, and he does listen to women. the same as he listens to men. it doesn't break down along gender

however, politico's mike allen says that doesn't pass the political smell test. kwb this is one of the few political mysteries that has an unambiguously correct answer. top demes tell us if president obama is going to have a big legacy accomplishment this term, it has to be immigration. so he's making an historic test of whether the campaign machinery can translate to governing. joining us is howard fineman and nia-malika henderson. nia-malika, let me begin with you. what's your answer to the question of the president's true objective here? >> well, i think his true objective has been what it always was. even going back to 2008 when he campaigned on the issue of comprehensive immigration reform. obviously wasn't able to get it done in his first term. gave a bunch of speeches that essentially laid out the same thing he laid out yesterday, the sort of guiding framework where he wants to take this. i think it always has been an issue for republicans. he doesn't necessarily have to make it an issue for them. he certainly isn't standing for re-election. i think he alr

joining us now is mike allen to review a little bit about what happened yesterday. mike, we were not sure there would be a vote at some point. obviously the house felt a bit jammed by the senate. did mitch mcconnell jam john boehner and force boehner's hand? >> he didn't force boehner's hand, but he did step up in a way that boehner didn't. people will tell you on capitol hill boehner's nerve never looked weaker, here's why. for most of the day yesterday we were not sure there would be a vote, and if there was a vote it could include new spending measures. this bill is all tax increases and very little spending cuts. when the republicans got together yesterday afternoon, there was a rebellion among house republicans. they all wanted spending cuts, both boehner and his number two, eric cantor put out a statement saying there was near unanimous concern about spending. the debate for much of the day is what do we tack on to this turkey the senate sent us? do cuts that we know kill it as the poison pill or there was some conversation about attaching cuts that democrats m

joining us now mike allen, welcome. >> good morning, mark. >> so why is the president picking this fight. hagel has a lot of opposition on the right. why does he want chuck hagel for the job? >> part of it now is a manhood thing. he can't be ruled second national security pick after susan was out there described as a presidential favorite, he went ahead and made a different choice for secretary of state going with john kerry. democrats are unhappy because of some of the gay comments, some of the democrats in the senate now didn't serve with him and so are on the fence. a top senate democratic official said to me, a path exists for him to be confirmed when you're with the president's party. but they say, he has a lot of explaining to do and the white house has a lot of work to do if republicans impose hagel enmasse. they can't count on the 51 democratic votes. >> this confirmation fight threatens because of the prominence of the job to become a big part of the january/february narrative, does this hurt the president moving forward? >> it certainly does. mark, on time.com, you make the poi

politico's mike allen joins me now. what is his strategy now?you've been talking to members of the nra? >> his strategy is to make sure that he is being inclusive. this is going to move very quickly. the vice president saying earlier today that is he going to give his recommendations to president obama by tuesday so, he wants to be able to argue that he has listened to everyone, and they're really doing that. three meetings at the white house today, including one with the nra and five other shooting support groups. earlier today the vice president met with ducks unlimited and some other sort of water fowl outdoor sports groups, and later today the attorney general is meeting with retailers, including cabella's, wal-mart, and some others. they're all trying to get their ideas. we're told that in this most sensitive meeting, this one at 1:45 that includes the national rifle association, vice president biden is really going to push them to participate to say we need to try and find some area for common ground, for compromise. we're not going to et

. >> mike allen, good morning to you. on monday we heard from the gang of eight. yesterday, the president. any chance we hear from boehner and house republicans today? >> they are being quiet. the house republicans will be a real challenge for this bill. over the weekend, we have seen it unfold here on "morning joe." we have seen a tech tonic change on where the movement is on this issue. just monday rush limbaugh said it was up to him and fox news to kill this it bill. but yesterday in that clip that we just heard from senator rubio, rush limbaugh who rarely changes his mind softens his position. he did say the obama administration was running a no-huddle offense on america. first guns, then amnesty. but he went to say that if the plan would work the way senator rubio described it, that he would be for it. it would be important to do. it's a problem that needs to be solved. so the republicans rhetoric is meeting up with the electoral reality. but the problem is getting enough house members who feel like an incentive to do it back home. so many members are from de
