allen, former u.s. assistant attorney, and our chief political correspondent dana bash. the white house is considering allowing mike mcfaul, the former u.s. ambassador to russia, he served for five years in the government, to be questioned by putin's regime. what's that all about? >> i don't think it's the white house considering it. i don't think it's the administration considering. i think it's the president of the united states not saying no. and his press secretary, because of that, not being able to say no because she speaks for him and he's watching the press briefing. in about 45 minutes, a little under, the united states senate is going to pass a resolution that has been proposed by the democratic leader saying under no circumstances would or should or could a u.s. ambassador or a u.s. member of the diplomatic corps be allowed to be interrogated by vladimir putin or anybody in russia. the fact that the republican leadership is allowing, as toothless as it is, a resolution for the congress and for the senate to be on record saying this tells you all you need to know. >> you're a former assistant u.s. attorne

allen? get your head out of the gutter, young man. thank you very much. here we do come. we are minutes away from a major foreign policy meeting on capitol hill. secretary of state mike pompeo is about to testify before members of the senate foreign relations committee. we know he'll face some tough questions about what happened at that summit in helsinki and with the administration under pressure over its russia policy, pompeo put out a tough new statement on russia's annexation of crimea saying, quote, the united states calls on russia to respect the principles to which respect the principles for which it has long claimed to adhere and to end its occupation of crimea. through its actions, russia has acted in a manner unworthy of a great nation and has chosen to isolate itself from the international community. president trump had invited vladimir putin to visit washington for a follow-up meeting this fall but you just heard that his national security advisor, john bolton, is saying the bilateral will not happen until 2019. quote, this is john bolton's words, after the russian -- russia witch hunt is over. hei heidi przybyla is an international reporter for nbc news.
