nbc bay area photo journalist mike anderson takes a look into the high life so to speak of a crane operator and explains how the cranes may have inspired hollywood history. >> hi. i'm bill and i am a crane operator. when you drive over the bay bridge and you see those big white things over there that's what i operate. anything in the bay area probably comes through the port of oakland. our job is to either take them off or put them on the ship. i don't think much about what's in the containers. i just pick them up and put them down. i think the height is about 110 feet. the controls in the crane are basically just two joy sticks like in a video game and the bottom of the crane is just clear glass. underneath the cab there's about a hundred feet of cable. that's the hardest part of operating the crane is controlling that. if you doesn't it is very unsafe. you have a 30-ton box swinging overhead. i hate to say it but it happens. you see things down there that you just, you know, kind of roll with the punches and keep going. there's a local legend saying that george lucas used the port cranes
