let's talk about this with mike baker, a former cia covert operations officer. he's now president of global intelligence firm. good morning, mike. >> good morning, thank you. >> so these american recon flights, these spy planes flying over syria, what specifically will they look for? >> well, you've got to put together target packages. you've got to have, specific details, not just a general idea of how you are going to -- what you are going to when and where you are going to attack. specific sites, and you know, we've got an array of options in terms of how we would conduct these strikes, but at the very front end of it, you've got to have information that allows you to pick and choose which ones with specificity. so the unmanned or manned surveillance that we're talking about now over syria and this all started in syria quite some time ago, isis has been very busy consolidating their territory, they own a province in northern syria. they moving into alleppo in that area. obviously with the border in iraq, they moved right there, as they put their boots on the g

as we prepare to mark 13 years since the attacks of september 11th, let's bring in mike baker, a former cia covert operations officer and a member of diligence llc. the timing is frightening, the 13th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks fast approaching. the u.s. government, one official saying there is a significant increase in chatter both on the phone and internet lines from terrorists overseas. this is similar to what officials saw the days leading to the days leading before the september 11th attacks. what is the president waiting for? >> well, you know, the president is in a position where he sees an awful lot of information, you know. we shouldn't -- to be fair, the administration is weighing their options. i think his comment yesterday about they don't have a strategy, he'd obviously like to walk that dog back. i think he'd prefer to say they've been developing ideas for some time. isis didn't happen overnight. this happens every year ahead of 9/11. and part of it, now i think we can attribute to the fact that, you know, islamic status has been experiencing the success they have. an

me now with their insig insights, paul krus shenk in washington and also former covert officer mike baker. i'll begin with you, paul, if i can, and that is this, as devastating as this news has been, to see an american journalist executed in such a brutal and ruthless way, with such a clear message, is it possible it will have any effect whatsoever on america's foreign policy? >> it's not clear. the policy at the moment is to try to somehow contain isis in iraq. it's been a growing threat in iraq. it's also a growing threat in syria and the united states is not at the moment confronting the group in syria, ashleigh, so unclear whether this will have any effect on u.s. foreign policy. it increases concern about the group. increases concern that the group could retaliate against u.s. interests both in the region, in places like jordan, lebanon. but also in the west, this is a group we're up to about 1,000 europeans recruits in its ranks so the concern is they could train these people and send them back to the west even on the united states to launch attacks. >> to that extend, mike baker, f

here is mike baker joining us from idaho. i want to get right at this.sipated. i want somebody to be tim. can somebody do that? >> the white house has not gone in there with the idea of just feeding isis. we cannot even agree on a name. this is all about, just simply to very important short term object is. they provide some humanitarian assistance. it has a really significant global fluoride that we have to defeat. that is the disconnect here. i think you have to confirm it. doesn't an advisor pick up a gun and shoot people? >> well, we tend to hamstring our personnel. they put on another 130. providing some humanitarian assistance. really, we are still doing that? the reality of it is different. we have done about 20 airstrikes. you cannot do those airstrikes without some support on the ground. you know, these are not combat troops. they are trying to have it both ways. we cannot win this in a political fashion. that is the way they are approaching it. stuart: that is interesting. if you want to win, you win it militarily. the left will not let the pres

let's bring in mike baker, former cia covert operations officer. mike, good to see you though with very tough news. how does this happen? >> well, i mean, i think the positive side of this, there's really not one in the tragedy like this but you have to look at the big picture. these attacks referred to as green on blue attacks, afghanistan military attacking our armed forces and coalition forces happen by the dozens just a couple years ago. the numbers have reduced drastically. the concern is as we pull out and leave fewer and fewer troops there, potential for this to happen is going to increase because our personnel, the coalition forces, are going to be more increasingly unprotected in a sense working to train side by side with afghan forces. it's not something we can reduce but in a sense i think what we're doing is setting ourselves up for more problems such as this tragedy. >> let me ask you. how do we have a relationship with afghan people with the afghan military and police there. are we sending our men and women into a situation that's just
